So I've taken an interest in improving my physical health lately. I'm overweight and know that cardio is the best form of exercise to slim down.
I really enjoy using a treadmill, and have access to one. I even bought a pair of running shoes and special arch supports for my feet.
However, I'm knock-kneed (20 yrs old and always have been, it's bone-related.) Because of this, if I'm on my feet all day, my knees start to hurt.
But even 10 to 15 minutes into walking or jogging, my ankles start to hurt. It's a significant ache, but it can be sharp at times too. I talked to my doctor about it, and she concluded I most likely have weak ankles.
Does anyone have any advice as to how to overcome this? Walking alone doesn't seem to make them stronger.
Also, surgery is out, as I'd have to be in a wheel chair for a year, and my knees really aren't even that noticeable.

If you go to a sport injury trainer or specialist you can have them show you how to strap your ankles properly. My friend was a PT and Occupational therapist student and she really helped me when my outer heel tendons used to pop out when running long distances. It isn't the same but they can adjust it for you and you can then do it yourself.

Also are you going to a gym? if so put some sort of weights training into what you are doing. Doing squats and things with (or without) weights in precise positions should help you slowly build up ankle, knee, and hip strength as you have to be well balanced and grounded.

Good luck! I was once 120kg 230lbs and now I am as healthy as anyone else (I avoid the scales though and just go by general fit of clothes. It works better for me maintaining my weight)
Ellipticals are REALLY good if you want to run and not hurt your knees!

If you are looking to strengthen your ankles there are exercises you can do.
Here's a short wikihow list to get you started:

8 Ways to Strengthen Your Ankles

I would recommend looking online for exercises that fit you best. And if you have the resources to do so, see a trainer!

Best of Luck!
