Though I don't understand the meaning of love

I play backyard monsters and I've never gotten gaia gold for it >.> So I deem it pretty useless

You get gold every time you submit an achievement. In-game it's called "Brag to your friends". When you click "yes" and then "send" you get 3k+ gold. Same for Resort World.
That's why you see a lot of people making alt accounts to play this game, because it's so easy to get to level 20, grab the 100k (200k if you played RW with BYM) and then trade it to their main.
You'll get even more money at a faster rate if you can play the game right and get as many achievements as you can (for example, building lots of stuff, upgrading all of them, or simply attacking a smurf's yard and then sending the "I just looted _____" achievement in over and over).

When you "Brag to your friends", a small message is shown on the "My Gaia" page. But your friends don't get a notification in their banner bubble, in fact your friends probably don't even see it and couldn't care less if they did.

Well, you can see for yourself on the My Gaia page, underneath "Notices" it says "Friend's Stuff".
This game was designed for Facebook, so "Brag to your friends" would post a message on your wall. On Gaia, "My Gaia" is the wall equivalent.

When you're done building all the things you can build or if your workers are all busy, refresh the page and look at your gold count.
