Personally, I keep religion out. Ive enjoyed Christmas in my own way. And yes, Ive angered plenty of Catholics and Christians and other religious followers because I prefer to celebrate Christmas my own way.
Ive always respected other's views on the celebration of it, and never have I cast an ill wish against them. But, they have never done the same for me where I choose NOT to have religion in my life.
Christmas growing up as a kid (I am 33yrs old), Christmas meant, Winter Time.. fun in the snow, helping my grandparents shovel the snow so they could get in and out of their home, fresh hot chocolate after shoveling, enjoying making Crafts by the fireplace with my grandparents who raised me, decorating the tree inside AND outside, making a snow-man, seeing my cousins (all 35 of them), my aunts and uncles, our long time friends across the street, the fun projects in school back when saying "Christmas" wasnt taken offensively by anyone, enjoying a fresh hot cooked meal on Christmas Day, enjoying presents under the tree, enjoy watching Grandma turn blushing red when Grandpa kissed her under the mistletoe, seeing the local Police and Fire Department give the neighborhood kids a ride on the fire truck down to town-hall to enjoy the local town festivities. Chief of Police used to dress up as Santa Claus, his wife as Mrs Claus sitting in a rocking chair reading stories to us kids, while all the Moms and Dads would be dancing to classic Bing Crosby Christmas music.
Back then, we had 15 days of school OFF for Christmas vacation.
Christmas is what you decide to make of it, regardless if you are religious or not, and without the harsh opinions of others trying to impede on your happiness.
I enjoy giving presents out. I do alot of fresh baking... cookies, cakes, pastries, pies, scones, breads.. and I make individual baskets and give them out to all my families and best friends. I play "Santa Claus" by mail for my childhood friend's 6 yr old son by sending him a Card with a stylish letter, a gift certificate to an Arts and Crafts store. I enjoy spending all day long cooking and prepping the Christmas dinner and inviting over as many people as possible. We do "Secret Santa".
My current job ALLOWS all displays of Christmas regardless of nationality and religion. They sent a memo saying "Please be sensitive and TOLERANT and recognize that everyone has a right to enjoy this holiday, no matter what their beliefs are and to not pass judgement on someone who chooses to enjoy it different than yours"...
No matter what, Christmas does not necessarily have a definition that is 'in gold'. Its what you make of it. There is nothing wrong with receiving presents, so long as you give as well. Its good to be thought of, and also to think of others as well.
