Pretty much the same here, though a kick-a** meal comes into it as well,
...I like presents though...

Well, the only reason we do presents is because St. Nicolas dropped gold down chimneys and became "Santa Claus." It still has to do w/ Christianity though

Considering that Christ's Birth actually happened sometime around August, and that Christmas as we celebrate it was originally the Winter Solstice, I think it's fine the way it is now.

Actually, the 24th of December had not originally anything to do about Jesus Christ's birth. It once used to be a holiday where you celebrated the Winter Solstice. I'm a humanitarian, and I celebrate Christmas. As do all of us. One of the reasons are of course tradition. You don't break a tradition like that, just because you don't believe in God!

So you could say it's still a holiday. Just not a "Holy" one.

So to say that Jesus the reason we celebrate.. That'd be wrong. If we were told that Jesus birth were in the summer, we would've celebrated some kind of Christmas then, but we still would have celebrated "Christmas". Perhaps in a slightly different way, but we still would have celebrated it.

Personally, I celebrate Christmas because of family, presents, food, and just because of the cheer Christmas feeling I get in my stomach!

I think everyone has the wrong idea too.
'Chistmas' or Yule, is the celebration of the rising of the 'wheel' at a time where the calendar is at it's lowest point and can only go higher, into longer brighter and warmer days. The Winter Solstice being the shortest day of the year. (and also my birthday XD)

Traditions of Yule are burning the Yule log, decorating pine tree's, roasting a large ham and holly and mistletoe traditions originated through Yule.

Yule predates Jesus.

Christmas, sadly, does have a new meaning to me. Free flight home to spend 3 carefree weeks in a city, with friends and family, that I haven't seen since June 30. Can't wait...

I was getting ready to say the same thing.

Like many of the people here have already said, many of the modern Christmas traditions come from the celebration of the winter solace. A celebration is commonly celebrated all over the world. The date of December 25th being the day of Jesus's birth was set into cannon until the rule the roman Emperor Constantine. Constantine was the first Christian Emperor of the Roman Empire and was the first to bring Christianity into political and cultural legitimacy. During that time there was as many gospels about the faith as there were people that followed the faith. Constantine knew that if this baby religion was going to get a strong foothold in the world a set of cannon laws and beliefs was going to have to be set forth.

He held a meeting with other top leaders in the religion and after many weeks decided on a set of gospels which would be set down as the unquestionable dogma for the faith. From this conferences the now widely known facts that Jesus was the Son of God and that he was born in December and not as many believed during the Summer, was set as Religious law.

It is also during this particular moment in history that many of the modern conspiracy theories about the faith arise because of the fact that many of the gospels which were chosen by the tribunal were then stamped as heresy. Some of these gospels were those that painted Jesus Christ not as the son of God, but as a human prophet, and imperfect man. It is rumored that some even hinted to the fact he had raised a family and married in the decades before he started preaching.

This is were the Book "The Da Vinci Code" gets it's fuel, since it is a rumor that Magdalena, described as a mere prostitute in the gospel was in fact Jesus's closet apostle and wife.
interesting very interesting ive nvr looked at it from that point of view i so keep sharing i like to hear points of view and hehe i wanna see how large this forum can get lol so ya...
It's The Unofficial Gift Day.

Don't you dare preach and ruin my monetary donations I don't deserve.
