Come on people, it's 2011 not 1950.

eek It is?!

rolleyes

Well, unless I got trapped in a time vortex, it's still 2010.

To the OP: this is how incredibly edgy and novel your idea is.
Look! Halfway there to a bingo.

About half of these apply to you, too. Your radically unique way of thinking rocks my world.

It's certainly not the first time someone has posted something like this. So why do you respond to it? You're not making me feel any different on my stance. You know that my point is that taboo words should be abolished - the only reason why someone should get offended when I say n****r is because they are reacting to it in a negative fashion or because I've actually called them less than human which I have never done and will never do. And the n****r spam does very well for attracting attention - especially the type of crowd I'm looking for. Zealots who assume I'm just another over privileged white person who is whining about not being able to casually walk up to black people and call them spear chuckers. They don't seem to understand I am talking about using n****r in appropriate situations. -

Such as saying n****r when reading Huckleberry finn, or Diary of a drug fiend,
Or saying n***a to your black friends,
Or calling your girl buds Nigglets.

To some people I realize it will never be appropriate to use it. That is a problem they need to work out with themselves I suppose. Something about letting go of hatred and fear and all that junk.

But you know, it's Gaia. Whatever.
Which was my point in my initial post.

I love how when it comes to treating marginalized groups with respect, it's called being "politically correct" rolleyes

Its offensive because the word has been and still is used to dehumanize black people. Plain and simple. You can derail all you want by saying "but I didn't mean blah blah blah." You know what the world has used the word for. You know the history behind the word. You know the word has painful connotations. And yet you ask "why is it still offensive?" Right.
What about the word negro?

Just thought of that. Back in lynching days that one was a very racist term but historically it's not on the same level as n****r.

Yes it is an offensive term as well, because it dehumanizes people, brings us down to solely our skin color and nothing else.
Well yeah that's the point. It's a word to distinguish the race, like Caucasian, or Oriental. If it's so offensive still why is there the United Negro College Fund?

But you know, it's Gaia. Whatever.

No matter your noble intentions, your arguments put you squarely in the company of racism apologists - as I showed with those links. Words Mean Things. Things Have History.
If you are white, it is not your place to decide (as member of the privileged class) which words "should" be offensive or acceptable to the marginalized class. It is not your place to decide that they should just stop taking it all so personally and stop being so sensitive and how mean those black people are stifling your freedom of speeeeeech. {Hey, does that sound familiar? I wonder why.}

Reclaiming those words, if you were thinking of backpedaling in that direction, is not your place. And just by the way, assuming that "spear chuckers" is the end all be all of all racist remarks shows a profound lack of understanding just what the hell you are talking about.

I am white, I benefit from white privilege and I recognize that that position entails that I Do Not Get To Use some words. Tough tittie. Deal.

Just what I need. Another white person telling me it's not my place to act a certain way towards the Nergo people. I never mentioned black people needing to get over me calling them n****r - because I have never called a black person a n****r and I don't use my words like an old southern racist. White people give me s**t for it, for not being a good privileged little white girl and bending over backwards for ridiculous social norms.

I have never offended a black person in person by saying n***a or Negro or n****r because I am a very understanding, kind, and humorous person. On the internet it's a different story, but on the internet you can't see the color of someone's skin - so you aren't as cautious about who you say the Magic Word to. I usually make an effort to explain and apologize to black people or people who are offended, and if they still have a problem with me - that's their fault. They need to get over it.

oops, I mean... YOU DON"T UNDERSTAND MY POINT OF VIEW, BLACK PEOPLE NEED TO GET OVER THEMSELVES, I AM A PRIVILAGED WHITE GIRL THEREFORE I AM RIGHT, Why are you being so hostile anyway when you are white, don't you know black people don't have emotions? LOLOLOLOL JK I AM JUST PLAYING DEVILS ADVOCATE. You don't see me complaining when I get called Frenchy. Do you realize how many people hate french people? That gives me the right to say n****r. Besides, I have more important issues to think about. Like how it takes 9 months for a black woman to pass a turd...hmmmmmm....

People are emotional zealots. That's probably not going to change for a long time. In the mean time, I will say n****r whenever I feel like it unless I feel like it might be hazardous to my safety (i.e. around a bunch of ignorant, militant black guys). The word has no significance to me because I'm not racist, and I'm not black, so I use it satirically or ironically.

Sometimes it's a guilty pleasure to use the word "n****r" against someone who isn't black. A couple of times I called my brother a n****r just on account of because, maybe because he was acting foolish or something. Overall, the word just sounds funny for some reason. It sounds like it could be an action word or something. But reality says otherwise.

Also, n****r n****r n****r.

Be careful when saying that, because some random black guy could come out of nowhere and beat the s**t out of you. xd

Ohhh yesss, I am a victim of that guilty pleasure - as I call my boyfriend a n****r sometimes when he gives me sass. His family is racist so it's an inside joke.

But it can also be "correct" to call someone who is not black a n****r, as the dictionary defines n****r as not only someone dark-skinned, but also :

a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc.
a victim of prejudice similar to that suffered by blacks; a person who is economically, politically, or socially disenfranchised.

Hm. To tell you the truth, my life as being on the receiving end of other people could have me defined as a n****r, too. I'm not black, mind you, but that's the catch. But maybe I could be wrong because despite being on the receiving end all my life, I've not succumbed to "self-fulfilling prophecy" and have not decided to become some belligerent a*****e in society because others were assholes towards me.

However, while we can find definitions and anything else, reality dictates that "n****r" is exclusively a racial slur towards black people. There's no changing it. I'm not saying it's easy to accept. But at least the word "n****r" should just be reserved for the most private of events, like if you're with your buddies and you all get along just fine......just don't say "n****r" too loud or else. eek

That is generally all you can do at the moment, until the word stops holding meaning as such a highly offensive racist slur to the collective consciousness of all people. I probably won't live to see the day.

I don't think any of us will. For the rest of our lives the situation could erupt into this:

RANDOM BLACK GUY (RBG) : "Are you a racist, ********?!"
WHITE PERSON : "Well, no, I-*RBG beats up WP* AH! *beating continues*"
Seriously, is it THAT hard to just use another word?
Hella Bad Scrub
Seriously, is it THAT hard to just use another word?

Oh, I know there are dozens of other words to use, but "n****r" just sounds funniest. Unless it becomes overused, then another word could sound funnier. Check the link in case you're curious. xd

Right.
And that's where your blinding privilege and rubbing elbows with racism apology comes in. SEE ABOVE.

You do know that racism entails more than donning a pointy hat and burning crosses, right? Your garden variety of racism may be comparatively meek and victim-less, but that *really* does not count as a defence when people call you out on it. [General you]
What you call "bending over backwards for ridiculous social norms" is really just plain old-fashioned courtesy. Why would you make an issue out of your perceived entitlement to use a word that for many people connotes hatred, persecution, violence and more?

And don't mistake me; I know what you're trying to get at. I know you think this is a very clever proposal to dilute the meaning of the word, thus counteracting the taboo. Again - not novel. Not unique. Not edgy. It may yet happen, someday, but you are not going to be the one forcing the issue. You are just going to look like a big 'ole racist (or a racist-elbow-rubber, whichever you prefer) with your privilege hanging out for the world to see, no matter how much you protest you're not. Again, tough tittie. Deal.

I know, it's only african americans who have suffered such travesties, and have deserved the right to be prejudice at all times against the evil white devil. No other races in the history of man, have ever been enslaved and abused and deserving of sympathy. I should just give myself up as a slave to a local ghetto family to make amends for all the misdeeds my ancestors may or may not have done to your poor race :C

Wow. Overexaggerate much? Really.

One doesn't have to be a "whiny b***h" as you insinuate just because they are offended by a dehumanizing word. I wonder, do you ask the Chinese why they are upset when somebody makes a "ch**k joke? How about Mexicans when they are upset about being called b****rs?

Now now. At this point I have stated many times that when I say n****r it's your fault for being offended by it and holding that word to such high standards and holding such negative feelings to it. I'm sure that's what you'd like to hear, right? rolleyes

No dear. I live in Maryland - one of the most interestingly diverse states in the case of racism (not just for whitesxblacks though - but I won't get into that). In the cities, you will be murdered for carding a black person. In the south, they make jokes about "buttering your corn like a n****r" To say I don't understand the social construction of how people are offended by racial slurs is a far-fetched assumption.

n****r is a word I rarely use and when I do use it I am not afraid of it because I know how I use it. And I don't like to be reprimanded by my peers for saying it. Obviously I wouldn't be going up to you and saying you're a n****r. You're a stranger. I don't know how you will react if I will insult you. This obviously works with any word - not just n****r. Also Retard and ******** and Douche and everything else along those lines.

I will however insult my black friends by calling them niggers, and then we'll laugh and get on with our lives.

Here's the thing. Most (and when I say most I mean ALL) people who go out and demand that black people get over racism and stop being so mad when they are using racial slurs that are directed towards them aren't doing it because they are saying it in a historical context. It's done in a derogatory and insulting manner, reminding the people of color/disabled/whoever you use slurs against of your elevated status as a privileged person.

Which makes it no different than any other insult, in human communication.

Retard: Reminding you that I'm more mentally capable, than you are.

a*****e (and any other references to the human body): You're not even worthy of being considered a full human being.
