This and you can try to change a word but you can't change the culture. That word is for ignorant bigots no matter how you look at it. (Yeah Black, White, Green or rainbow doesn't matter if you use it you are probably stupid)
You do know that n****r means ignorant right??

Duh. Hence my play on words.
Just checking, most people think its because of the Spanish word for black or some stupid s**t.

Nergo=Black.
N-er=ignorant. However, the word actually just fuels more ignorant. Like an ex-Blood gang member said that word just fuels negativity not just with the Black people but all people. It's easy to mistreat someone that's a N-er but it's had to mistreat a friend, lover, sister or brother. 10+ for HBO for always having good docs like that.
you just want say n****r will you?

Nope. See no reason too. It's an ugly stupid word for ugly stupid people. I'm not ugly or stupid.

There's a difference between using a word offensively and using it within the context of a serious discussion.

The word itself is bad in terms of its usage and connotation. But when discussing it within a medium like this, using it in a non-offensive way is appropriate.

Other than that, there was quite a bit wrong with what you said.

It's not just the few bad apples, it's the roots that feed the entire tree... it must be nice to be able to ignore the ways those words are constructed around other people. neutral

It depends on the environment where you were raised mostly. What would you do if you lived for 10 years thinking that "n****r" was just a random word that you called others, and they called you it back as a joke, and everyone around you was like this? Then you learn its history, and all of a sudden everyone around you has been being racists the whole time? That would be kinda redundant and silly honestly...

Not so much wrong... just... I can't really articulate it right, lol. But you basically said this:

it was used to name a group that was by every standard ignorant. but the word is not bad. Just the people that use it for bad.

In the context you described, the usage of the word itself was bad, and the people who used it were bad for using it how they used it.

The word wasn't used as a type of classification to call people ignorant in a general sense. It was specifically used on African-Americans and African-American slaves because they were deemed inferior due to the color of their skin, and they were perceived as being ignorant and unintelligent.

It was used for anyone that was seen as ignorant. the only time slave were called this was a long time ago here in america and the UK. So the word is not bad just how you use it can be. Just like another word out there.

PS don't try to twist my words next time.

I quoted you word for word, there wasn't any twisting done. And I'll need a source on the part where you claim that "It was used for anyone that was seen as ignorant." Because the sources I've read acknowledge it as being an ethnic slur.

Quote:
THE N-WORD SEEMS to have had a negative connotation from its birth, although the exact meaning has changed over time. The N-word comes from the Portuguese word "Negro." In The Name "Negro," Its Origins and Evil Use, Richard B. Moore wrote, "[T]he first use of the word 'negro' as a noun or name in relation to African people is to be traced back to the period after 1441, when the Portuguese explorers went down the African coast. ... [A]s soon as the area south of the Senegal River has been reached, where the modern slave trade was begun by the Portuguese, the designation of the native Africans is changed from Moors or Azenegues to 'negros.' "

By the 17th century, the use of the term "negro" as synonymous with "slave" was common in the British colonies in America, and remained that way through the end of the Civil War. In the same year that the American Revolution began, William Dunbar wrote of his Baton Rouge plantation that "[t]he Plantation Negroes are in Number 14. ... There are also 23 New Negroes for sale." And notices were posted in July 1769 in Charleston, S.C.: "To Be Sold, on Thursday the third Day of August a Cargo of Ninety-Four Prime, Healthy Negroes."

"n****r" is almost certainly a phonetic spelling of the white Southern pronunciation of "Negro," and probably came into written use at a time when white America's spelling rules were about as lax as those of the hip-hop nation today.

Quote:
n****r is a noun in the English language, most notable for its usage in a pejorative context to refer to black people (generally people of Sub-Saharan African descent), and also as an informal slang term, among other contexts. It is a common ethnic slur. The word originated as a term used in a neutral context to refer to black people, as a variation of the Spanish/Portuguese noun negro, a descendant of the Latin adjective niger, meaning the color "black".[1][2][3][4]

Context doesn't matter when there is a good chance of a meaning being taking that is derogatory because it can confirm cultures of discrimination. In this regard, what you intend matters nought. It is what other people take you to mean that matters.
I disagree. My view is that when you are talking about words, it is the fault of the person hearing them, however they respond to it emotionally. That's my opinion.

We are not talking about concern about emotional state here. What we are talking about is how words inform a persons perceptions of others because of how some words carry a meaning that derides certain people unacceptable.
So, you're position is that one should curtail their speech so as to not incite prejudice in those hearing them?

More or less, but it kind of depends on what you are inciting prejudice against.

It could be argued that something like "You ******** weasel." incites prejudice against the individual it refers to in some contexts. I do not have such a problem with that. While it is most certainly rude, and in a lot of situations I would argue to shouldn't use(e.g to bully in the school yard), I wouldn't really have too much of a problem if you insulted someone who was doing something morally abhorrent. For example, if there was someone who was attempting to mislead people about their intentions so that could get sex from them, I wouldn't have a problem with "You ******** weasel(although, if you are concerned about the perception of weasels, this would be a problem, as it identifies weasels as being of an unacceptable nature)."

However, for something like "b***h" or "n****r," the reason thats someone is being presented as inferior is on the grounds of gender or race respectively. These I have a problem with. They are not simply attacking some for engaging in a wrong behaviour. They attack on the grounds that a gender or race is undervalued, which is a discourse that feeds cultures that undervalue on the basis of gender or race.
That's assuming a lot about the intention of someone using the respective terms.

And I think you misunderstood my question. I meant, are you contending that one shouldn't speak these words because it would invite someone hearing them to pre-judge the speaker?

Their intention doesn't matter. I am talking about how listeners take the word and how it frames their understanding of those around them.

No, I am talking about the development and confirmation of cultures of discrimination. Words develop a certain ontological understanding of those around you. They can inform about whether someone is of value or not.
