Something that amuses me is stereotypes, the intangible labels stamped on the heads of the students of my high-school. I live in a moderate-size town in north-eastern Texas. There are cliques, but not to the point where all the people are segregated. I am mixed with Black and White, my mother being a ginger and my father, a rough looking man. I'm not very dark, and people often mistake me with either being from the Middle East or of Hispanic descent. The only way you can tell I'm mixed is my facial features (which makes it hilarious that I get these other races). I always find people who are just taken back at the fact that I do not like watermelon, and I am not a fan of grape soda OR kool-aid. None of this bothers me, because I think it's funny that people believe stereotypes. The only thing I don't like is some people will push the line, no matter how much I tell them when they are. Racist jokes are funny to me, as long as they aren't over-used or taken seriously. What i can't stand is what people do to my name. My name is Anikah (pronounced "Uh-KNEE-kah" ), and with that said, it's obvious what they call me. For the ones who haven't caught on, they call me "An*gga". it is the most obnoxious thing, mostly because I don't like that word. i don't like derogatory terms about ANY race, and the fact that they make it a play on words with my name is irritating.
With my rant being done, does anyone fit a stereotype? If so, which one (on purpose or is that just how you act?)
What's your opinion on racism/racist jokes?
Do/Did you have any nicknames in high-school that annoy you?
I find the stereotype for people of mixed race is that they're unusually attractive.

This is rather irritating as if you're not exceptionally attractive you feel like a bit of a let down.

Apparently dying my hair burgundy makes me look Viet . hahahahhaaha

Really? Most of the mixed race people aren't real attractive here.

That's pretty cool. I've always wanted to dye my hair burgundy, or a dark red,
but I've never gotten around to it.
I'm mixed too (Mom's Chinese, Dad's Swiss) and living in Switzerland I'm just "Asian" with all the stereotype people can think of... Smart, skinny, crafty, eating cats, dogs and other weird stuff, being good at video games, nerdy, prude, not able to speak the native language properly and so on...

I admit, I never spoke German until I went to school, but as soon as I did I was among the best in my class. I really suck at Math and other scientific school subjects, I'm mostly lazy as sh*t. I'm a nerd in the closet, I'm probably skinny compared to Swiss people, but compared to Asians I'd be on the chunky side. (Yes, I get stereotyped as Asian here and I get stereotyped as White in my mom's country...)

I do meet some stereotypes, but most of the time I'm just me. biggrin
I'm mixed too. People mistake me for being Filipino all the time.
Your problem is that you live in Texas

They aren't making fun of you for being mixed, those are black jokes. I don't fit into stereotypes other than "annoying girl".

Are they saying your name is a 'black name'?
That's silly, I've heard Anikah everywhere. DX

I get the typical- you're pale and have red hair so you MUST be Irish.
When people forget that red hair actually isn't an Irish thing. >.>
Oh you poor thing, no serious. I adore your name, I ounded it out in my head and it sounds pretty, I would kick teh living s**t out of anyoen who would tarnish such a lovely name as yours. Here at my old high school, people think I'm weird because apperently I'm supposed to "act black" instead...and bare with me on this cuz I am no racist...."act white"

Ok, now bare with me, my dad (biological) is Hatian and my mom is mixed with black and white (though she thinks she's puerto rican, but thats beside teh point...) So, coming from that, I'm darker than my brotehrs and sisters. Ok. My styles inlcude a little bit of the outcasts side, including Lolita, goth, punk, steampunk, hipster, harajuku, ganguro, skater, ect ect. the only styles I absolutly HATE with a passion is "gansta" urban style, because thats what everyone tells me I SHOULD wear (should but wont bitches!!!) Preppy becaus eomg, its..too...much...pink...I mean, I do sweet lolita, but there is NO REASON why someone whould only wear one color, even goths have darker versions of every color (except pink unless your cybergoth then thats a little different) and teh farer's look is out out out!!!

With this said, here if your skin is dark I guess you have to "act" a certain way, talk a certain way and be a certain way, which is ignorant as hell!!! I'm sorry, I'm a smart girl, i love my fat nerdy brain and glasses I love my adorable lolita styled clothing and my dollie shoes, I love my dictonary tone of speak and I love being weird. Its a stupid stereotype. Instead of looking for interesting things about you they look at your race, whic is stupid as ******** and apprently they deem dfferent races have different mental status. ITS UNBELIVABLE!!! These are young african americans doing this!!! I mean, or race has been discrimnated enough against but some still act like people owe them for something or another. The world owes you nothing, not air, ot life, not objects, it offers and owes no help, what you see is what you get, and thats that. -sighs- Its stupid as ********, I mean, extreme;y and it annoys me, people telling me I'm not black...ummm, I know what the hell I am I dont need a wansta wannabe who's only goal in life is wanting to get shot tell me who the hell I am or what the hell I am, because to that I can take my straight razor, reach down your throat and extract your tonsels and shove them down into your windpipe!!!! Phew...I feel better!! Ahaha, btu yeah, sterotypes, suck. ^w^
Speaking of labels, this is one of the BEST videos about labels I have ever seen. Everyone should watch it:

About racist jokes: I am white. As white as they get. I'm French, German, Finnish, and Russian, with a bit of Irish mixed in there somewhere. If I were any whiter, I'd be transparent. That said, I've experienced racism. Maybe not to the extent as some other races have, but I've felt it. I grew up in a pretty mixed lower middle class neighborhood, there was a nice mix of everything. I was once told in junior high, by a black person, that I couldn't wear a Nike wrist-sweatband to volleyball practice because I was white. I was beat up by a group of black girls because I wore FUBU shirt given to me by a well intentioned family member, and I didn't really know any better, either. (If you don't know what FUBU is, I've just dated myself).

While working in a grocery store deli, I've been called an ignorant cracker-a** white b***h because I didn't know how to respond when a black woman pointed to the deli case didn't say anything. Just looked at me and pointed. I asked her what she needed, and she flew off on me for, apparently, not being able to read her mind.

To me, racism is the easy way out. Everyone can pull their own race card, it's an easy copout to make the other person seem like they did something wrong. Like in the case of my deli counter, SHE was in the wrong but thought that if she pulled the race card, she could get whatever she wanted. 99.9% of the time, it doesn't work and makes you look stupid.

In the case of racial jokes or slurs, they're just words. Words only have the power you give them. They can hurt, sure, but in the end, the people yelling them are in the wrong, obviously. And it's in high school. High school is a VERY short, un-important part of your life. It seems like your entire world now, but trust me, once you're out, IT DOES GET BETTER.

So just keep your head down, power through, get the best grades you can, then go to college. College is cool, and a MUCH better environment than high school.

o: I hate the ignorance people portray when it comes to race...

I always get people who gasp at the fact that my hair is noticeably
brown and naturally curly. ._. Like I had my friend...I did know...for
about 6-7 years at the time...we were talking about dying hair. I
mentioned how I wanted to dye my hair a lighter brown... :l She
asked me "why do you wanna dye your hair even more?" And I
was like "WTF b***h I HAVEN'T DYED MY HAIR IN 5 YEARS,
do you think I curl my damn hair everyday too?" Long story short,
she told me she thought I had straight black hair because I looked
asian. .________. I'm only HALF asian btw, and this hoe knew that.

Nowadays...with all the asian lovers. :l I get swarms of questions
about Japanese and Koreans...o: And I get stuck with people
who like asian food. I prefer Mexican and some mofuggen beef
and bacon yo. U:

And I get alot of s**t cause I'm 5'11, a female, and "asian. hurhur

Whitest. Asian. Looking. Thing. Ever.
/end of rant. And btw, o: You're really gorgeous.

With my rant being done, does anyone fit a stereotype? If so, which one (on purpose or is that just how you act?)

-> Stereotype? Uh I can't really say to be honest. In high school, I guess I would have just been seen as a band geek. Yup. Played the flute. Took AP classes. All that good stuff and well graduated. Nothing big there. Though moving on to college, I stopped going into marching band. I still take good classes and do my best, but I've been going with the schedule more of video games. I've played video games my whole life, but now it seems more integrated than before. So both classes and band. A gamer? Probably. I don't know. I've never really fully grasped the concept of every stereotype. Hell my boyfriend jokes by calling me a "punk" some times when I mess with him.

What's your opinion on racism/racist jokes?

-> Jokes are jokes. It honestly depends on the person that says the joke, in what type of manner they say it, and how genuine of a joke it is affiliated to the group. Just by those conditions, a joke can be seen as really good or really bad.

I'm a mutt (A term my mother likes using a lot, and I've adopted). I'm half Mexican (my mother being full), a fourth Irish, a bit of German, and something else that I forget (my dad representing that sort). In the end I ended up having colored eyes and a bit of lighter skin from my dad, and brown eyes with the hue of my skin from my mother. When I met my boyfriend, he didn't really think I was Mexican at all (mainly because he is full Mexican). He still doesn't really believe since I have a natural taste preference for Italian food (I just love pasta, tomatoes, garlic, bread, oh so good!) and I don't really speak an Spanish. My Spanish is basically Spanglish. I took several years of it in high school, the only thing I learned was being able to read it (kind of). That's it.

Moving on, my boyfriend and his family joke around. His family like to call his one cousin "Negra" because of how dark her skin is. Honestly it is so dark, she could actually be seen as a black person even though like him she is a full Mexican. It's funny, and she just ran along with it. I sort of think of this comedian "Gabriel Iglesias". Oh man, he put up a video on Youtube called "Mexican Rednecks" that just got me laughing so hard. Racist? Perhaps not so much since he's Hispanic and he's just acknowledging that there are rednecks in the Hispanic community whether they are seen or not. It a way, it just depends on your views of a joke. Some are just naturally funnier than others just based on your background, so they may not always be as bad as they seem (or worse especially if people are using the joke to be insulting which I don't approve of).

Do/Did you have any nicknames in high-school that annoy you?
Oh yes I did (but not in high school). Middle school was the worse crowd at comments (elementary had bullies but lasted only a year). It wasn't my first name, mind you. Mine was too simple and sweet to really make fun of, plus it was generic. I've met a few with the same name over the years (but oddly not in college. Oh well) In any case, they came up with the term 'Over-cracker' Yup. Those days were so much fun (sarcasm). >.> Though as I said, it only lasted in middle school and that was the only worst part of it. There were others that took harsher comments and it was terrible to hear. Man kids with raging hormones can be so mean sometimes.

I don't consider myself to fit any stereotypes. In school, it was very strange because stereotypes overlapped. The nerds-redneck-jocks, the band geek-gangstas, hispanic-bandgeek-cheerleaders. It was very confusing. I was in band, hung out with "smart people," but wasn't considered cool, so that must be some kind of stereotype.

I haven't run unto a lot of overt racism, mostly other black people that try to revoke my metaphorical Black Card because I'm not stereotypical enough. I do remember once in 4th grade, someone asked me why I talked white. In high school a friend was surprised that I liked a popular rock song. I did listen to rap then, but I didn't tell people I liked rock or classical music because people were finally starting to leave me alone so I didn't want to push it.

Most of my problems now are from people that make up their version of me and lately I feel like I owe people apologies for having a dad, not living in the projects, and not wasting my youth. Lately it's been getting silly.
