1. Artist/Group Name: Shiina Ringo
2. Type of music/Genre: You could say she's JPOP, jazz, blues, showtune, rock, punk, or even operatic (at times). She makes beautiful songs, lets just leave it at that.
3. Summary of the band: Shiina Ringo has a new band called Tokyo Jihen (not many albums released yet, sadly). Basically, Shiina (her real first name is Yumiko) is an artist with music, and is extremely talented. Her lyrics are deep, moving, and not the typical "I love my man!" jpop lyrics. She writes her own songs, composes them, arranges them, produces all the images that have ever appeared of her (other then paparazzi shots, and concert counts cause she dresses specifically) and can perform AMAZING live performances.
For someone who wants specifics: Ringo is the b*****d child of Yuki (of judy and mary) bjork, Shirley Manson (her pop/rock edge) and some estranged spanish person (she rolls her R's.) Her voice is soft, and sometimes fierce and could be noted as "contained chaos". She has an edge that 99% of female jpop singers lack, and she knows her stuff.

4. Recommended songs:
Gibbs(Gips, Gibusu, etc) is a great example of a song that could have been 'average' if performed by Ayumi Hamasaki, or Maaya Sakamoto. It's amazing because of Shiina's versatile voice. It's a love ballad, but at the same time, the use of guitars and Ringo's ecclectic voice make it seem almost haunting. The lyrics remind one of a girl being brought out of her shell before the love of her life. Hell yes.
Honnou Catchy does not DESCRIBE this song. It gets so stuck in your head, and yet, there's no wondering why you like it. Lyrically, Ringo describes the pressures of being a woman, and thusly sexually stunted in society because if it's ideals. Now THATS not a typical Jpop song.
Souretsu is an effing masterpiece. Asian instruments are layered upon one another, paired with untraditional uses for western instruments create an eerie effect. It seems almost as though this song is a spiritual enlightenment, the atmosphere suggests it. The lyrics discuss the meaning of life through an email and suicide. Again, not typical jpop lyrics.

You can find these songs and MANY MORE on LimeWire,
Then you must delete them after 24 hours because you got them for sampling purposes, right? Support Ringo and her new band, if you like the music, and go to Yesasia.com and get some of it. She deserves it.

These are not my personal favorites, but as introductions to her range and artistry, they are the best, I believe.

I gotta second this. Also:
-CDJapan has a better selection of her stuff and
-while you're downloading those, help yourself to "tsumi to batsu" and "meisai."
I have some recommendations here, but if you have heard of similar music to these (or other gothic bands you highly suggest) I would TOTALLY appreciate it! I am really desparate for some suggestions. I love stuff with deep male vocals and rich lyrics (though they can be happy to depressing, it doesn't matter). I am also looking for pop, rock, dance, gothic, industrial, etc types of Russian music if you know of any^__^ Oh, and if you're interested, all three bands I listed have websites with more info (I know at least Seabound has some music clips).

1. Seabound
2. gothic (technically this encompasses everything from darkwave to dark ambient to theral, to neoclassic, and I don't know which exact subcategory this fits in); also considered electronica or electropop
3. two guys, though I forget how they divde music and composing, but I believe only one does actual singing
4. "Watching over you": not my favorite, but it is really one of their better ones. Lyrics like To the crag that braves the tide | To the beacon in the night | I trust in you (and) | I'm watching over you show their combination of poetry, some romance, and a bit of their more depressing subjects. The singer's voice is beautifully low, and since he is german, his english is slightly accented just the teeniest bit in certain words.

1. Wolfsheim
2. also gothic (some songs are in german); sometimes considered synthpop
3. two guys, one does vocals, the other electronics
4. "Care for you": lyics run along the line of and if this life still seems to be | not quite enough for you, | you'll find someone to help you out... | someone to miss and dream about. Thicker German accent than Seabound, but very clear English nonetheless. Again, a deep voice, and more poetic lyrics.

1. Melotron
2. gothic again, but sometimes considered "industrial dance" (see why I'm having problems trying to find other gothic music? It's too broad a term); all in German
3. three guys, I believe
4. "Tanz mit dem Teufel" and "Kein Morgen" are two of my favorties, even though I've only the barest clue what they're about (I've only taken two semesters of German). The pace is dance-like, and the vocals are a nice and moving, despite not knowing what is said.
Looking for something new and totally different than anything you have ever heard before? Not rock or punk or even pop really? Than you should check this out for some really sweet and gentle music:

1. Name of Artist: Rurutia

2. Type of music/Genre: She's mostly pop and a lot ofher songs are ballads. I usually hate ballads but hers are absolute magic. She's japanese by the way)

3. Summary of the band: Rurutia's real name is unknown. she's pretty mysterious. Every singlelittle thing you hear in her songs is completely written by her. She is a music genious in my opinion, and her voice is so cute! Its beautiful, edgy, and its just SO CUTE!!! She has a rather dark appearence to her, and I'm sure you will love her just as much as I do. There are tow pics of her in my sig. Go to this website to get mp3s and find out more info and music videos (translated from french)

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://rurutia.free.fr/lyrics.htm&prev=/search?q=rurutia+lyrics&hl=en&lr=

4. Recommended songs:

1) Lost Butterfly: This song is so sad! But absolutley beautiful. My favorite Rurutia song. i really like how at the end the chorus goes up an octive.

2) Pavame: This song starts out slow and kind of boring. and then-bam!- is jumps into a techno-ish chorus that's fast and gothic all at the same time. The chorus made me jump the first time i heard the song

3) Itoshigo Yo: This is the first song by her I found. Kind of short, but I still love it. Its really dark and almost angry sounding, and the music video shows her slipping her boyfriend sleeping pills. This song shows off Rurutia's crueler style.

4) Yuruginai Utsukushii Mono: the beginning of this song sounds like some commercial guy should be saying "Presto! Its magic!" but other than that the song is absolutley gorgeous. In my opinion, Rurutia's vocal performace is at its best in this song.

5) Toroimerai: This is an amazing ballad by Rurutia! I love how the Chorus sounds so stressed! It really adds onto the mood of the song and even though i don't know a word of Japanese, I can totally tell that this song is SAD

6) Heartdance: I don't get this song really, but its so pretty! Its really short, being 2 minutes and 10 seconds, and kind of reminds me of fairys. Since there arent that many lyrics or words at all, except for some phrases muttered inthe background and random la's and ah's here and there, i decided to translate it. Its about the beginning of life in spring and then into winter and then a cruel death. But yes a very good relazing song and I love it.

7) Chou no Mori: This song sounds extremely techno-ish and wierd but its still a very good song from Rurutia's latest album, Meme (same). I didn't like it at first but it really grows on you and now I love it.

cool Hallelujah: When I first heard this song, I did not want to like it, honestly. The beginning really turned me off with the minute long solo from some weird instrument. But then it joins along with an electric guitar and this song just plain rocks. Rurutia's only rock song.

9) Jiezru: A ballad. It has little instruments and there is somethign really spooky about it. Its quite haunting in my opinion, like a song someone would play at a funeral. Its so quiet, but not at all layed back. It's as if Rurutia is going to break down crying any moment.

10) Genwaku No Kaze: It's so sweet sounding! Very relaxing and sure to cure any bad mood and put a smile on anyones face. But most of her music is like that anyway (except Jiezru and Itoshigo Yo)

well, i hope people look into this artist. Its well worth it. Trust me.
I have a suggestion for lovers of J-pop and or anime soundtracks that want to get into it more. Use only if you have broadban.
