Come on, seriously? Where's the enka love?
Two recommendations:
1. Artist:
Jero (ジェロ)
2. Type of music/Genre: Enka is a Japanese genre composed of traditional ballads. Most of the lyrics have to do with love or loss, just like any other ballad.
3. Summary of the band: Though enka is traditionally for the older folks, interest in it is waning as the older generation is...waning, to put it politely. However, Jero is a fresh new face to the enka scene as Japan's first non-Japanese enka star AND first black enka singer. (In other words, he's like the Barack Obama of enka. Seriously.) As if that wasn't enough, his style of dress and dancing appeal to the younger generation; he breaks away from the somewhat stiff and formal decorum of traditional enka by dressing in urban attire and performing hip-hop dance moves in his music videos and on stage.
4. Recommended songs: Umiyuki (海雪) was his breakout single. He released an album of cover songs (aptly named COVERS), but I think my favorite is Eisa (えいさ) because it has that "wachika wachika" thing from every action movie made in the 70s. You know what I'm talking about? It's hard to explain.
Have I confused you enough yet? Just check him out:

1. Artist:
Hikawa Kiyoshi (氷川きよし)
2. Type of music/Genre: Enka
3. Summary of the band: Japan's "Prince of Enka," 26-year-old Hikawa Kiyoshi has a massive fan following and the talent to keep it. Like Jero, he's popular with both young people and elderly, but I think his fanbase tends to lean more towards the older folks. I personally think he's pretty cute...
4. Recommended songs: Kiyoshi no Zundoko Bushi (きよしのズンドコ節) was passed onto me by a friend. At first I thought this was made in the 70s because of the excessive disco ball usage and charmingly comic side stories in the video, but it's much more recent than that. And catchy. Very catchy. I also like Kiyoshi no Soran Bushi (きよしのソーラン節). Something about it sounds more Chinese than Japanese. I think it's the instruments used in the song. The brass is definitely Japanese, but the deep drum in the chorus and the flute remind me more of China, like Peking opera-ish or something. I don't know...maybe I'm completely wrong and just going crazy.
