I'm lazy so I'm just going to paste an edited version of my post on another thread about this. Please excuse if some of it seems OT:
To those who are still on the "Its her book, she can write what she wants," soapbox, or the "Its just another take on the lore," soapbox:
I agree with the posts involving the evolution of thoughts and ideas into something new. Meyers didn't seem to take any steps into mind when she was writing. Vampires suddenly became something completely different, Not only that but they became something that was very very close to other mythological creatures of legend. So why not call them that?
I've read "Well Vampires sell!" but here's the issue: Those who are vehemently fighting that Vampires sell and that's why she used Vamps instead of like Fairies or something else, are the same people who say Meyers (or any good author) isn't writing to sell books. I'm not exaggerating. In a thread that eventually got moved to recycle I'm sure (since I can't find it right now) the same person used the excuse that "She chose Vampires because vampires are popular and sell better." A little later, when people were complaining about her lore bending and poor writing, she said, and I'm pretty sure this is very close to a direct quote, "ANy good writer writes because they love it, not because they want to sell books."
So which is it?
Meyers wanted to sell books, so she wrote some books about pubescent teens humping vampires, but she did it in a very moral way since they got married and crap, all the while making it a very strange if palpable allegory for abstinence until marriage.
Another thing I'm noticing a lot are the people who seem to think everyone who hates how Meyers lore is so messed up and different hate it because its a different take and not because its bad. Meyers ideas of vampires and their interactions with humans are just plain stupid. Turning into sparkles, abstaining from blood drinking (I'm pretty sure they do that right?), knocking chicks up... They're unnecessary and simply put in there to appeal (and sell) to the lowest common denominator: The reader who almost never reads.
Meyers has ruined a whole generation of possible readers by writing a book so piss-poor and up its own a** that people think its supposed to be like this. People who read and actually ENJOY Twilight, with the exception of a few who just really like train-wrecks or edit other people's books for fun, may never be able to enjoy a really good book ever again, let alone a Vampire novel. Like someone said above, people are even saying DRACULA isn't what a Vamp should be because Meyer has ruined them with her sparkles and awkwardly written purple prose.
Its a known fact that the average Junior High School student is a few IQ points less intelligent than the kids in their grade a few years ago. This trend has been happening for a while from a combination of bad parenting (no, your precious snowflake can't get an A, they didn't do, any work!) and media that targets stupidity. Meyers happens to have cleverly disguised stupid media as one of the most (if not THE most) intellectual forms of media: the novel.
Just because its a book doesn't mean its a smart idea.
Also, as an added bonus, her grammar and spelling are godawful, her writing is overall terrible, and her characters are wooden and empty.
tl;dr: She killed lore and is ruining it for the rest of us smart people. That's why we are mad about the lore.
