This thread is really helpful. I'm looking forward to the world-building list. I read about that on Gaia somewhere, but have lost it.
Wow, this is just what this forum needs. It's a shame that all these wonderful rants are constantly being lost to the ages. Someone should stickie this. 3nodding

I have the power!

Either that or get someone to amend the 'helpful links' in the existing stickies. One could always PM a mod and proposition them for a new sticky. Ideally you'd want to start a new thread to get all the fancy first-page posts locked up for ease of information (One problem I have with the name bank is that the first page is a**-rapingly long...)

I miss that world building game cry . So useful...

Great as this idea is, the problem is that no one who needs to pay attention to the stickies ever does. gonk Which is why I think it's better just to have this thread as is and just keep bumping it with random conversation, rather like the "Read the stickies!!1 kthxbai" thread.

Although I imagine this one will get more attention from newbs and n00bs, simply because it's a link list to helpful information, rather than a list of rules. confused
Here's another off Gaia link you might consider: Holly Lisle

Her articles are somewhat like Limyaael on Livejournal but not so rant-y. I like them and have found them useful.
Endrael
And another legitimate bump, since I'm now curious. pirate That and I added yet another to the list.

What about these rants, guides, and how-to's makes them stand out from other, similar threads? Obviously, there's the fact that they're more informative and more in-depth, but there are also other threads that have been just as informative and with in-depth content that haven't fared as well. My curiosity has me wondering what, specifically, people like so much about these ones that failed to be met by other threads.

And on the same note, if I have a thread on the list that, for some reason, you don't think should be there, let me know and explain why you don't think it should be there.
Well, I can't speak fot anyone else, but I consider my Very Basic Things That Make Your Story Unreadable as a product still supported by the publishing company.

In other words, if anyone has any problems, complaints or questions regarding the topics covered or topics they'd like it to cover, they need only bring it up in the thread, because I still hang around here and do not by any means feel that I have said all that needs to be said untill the end of time.

It's like a reading list for newcomers. eek

And a convenient bookmark list for the reg's. mrgreen

Ace of Shadows
Hopefully some of the newbs will read these and won't start asking stupid questions.

That's the hope, yes. We just need to keep it on the first page.

This is a rather useful list... Great job!

Maybe someone should try PMing a mod to get it stickied...

Edit: oops, someone already suggested taht sweatdrop

Rock! The stuff she has up for world building is actually very similar to a site I had bookmarked some time back and lost in a crash. whee Except the site I had bookmarked was a lot more in-depth, and also by a writer whose name now utterly escapes me. sad

Dittoly. I've actually been thinking about expanding my short story guide to include some more tips and tricks, since there's been some questions come up lately that I never touched on and I think it would be a great help to have in there.
Haha.

The WF isn't that big... all the threads we need are within the span of a few pages, generally speaking. wink
rofl Yes, generally speaking. wink

It was a beautiful thing, wasn't it? I did so love that game.

There's nothing in the rules that says no one can ressurect it in the form of a new thread, is there? It's been dead for a long while already.
I have a few world-building and language construction links on my computer, but I'm currently using my sister's, so I can't access them. I'll dig them out and post them tomorrow or so.

Nothing wrong with that at all. Far less useful threads get repeated on a regular basis anyway.

But yeah, when people asked good questions that thread was awesome.

Hmm... maybe I'll go set one up.
Now you people really have me curious as to what that world building thread was, as I don't recall ever having seen it during my time here. confused

Or I could end up noticing the remake of the thread through my insomnia fogged brain after making this post. xp
You weren't around then, I don't think. But it's back now; just check the first page. whee Or just click this link, since I took the liberty fo finding it for you.

Also, you might want to add that to your list of helpful threads.
