What about the New 52? I'd say that counts as a pretty big alteration to the entire universe's continuity. If that's your criteria, then at least the Ultimates series don't affect Earth 616.

I can't imagine anything worse than a comic which remains unchanged forever.

Fortunately, this isn't a Marvel vs DC problem.
i mean i understand changing a few things. but some of the changes just dont make sense to me

With Marvel's Ultimates universe, if you don't like it, you can just ignore it, so I don't think that that should be a huge detractor from the Marvel universe as a whole, since it really has nothing to do with the main continuity.
I like both. They both have some awesome series. Teen Titans, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Static Shock and Hawkworld are all really cool. I love the She-Hulk, anything X-men related is usually fun to read and the Avengers kick a**...so yeah. Too hard to choose just one and why should I? I don't want to lose out on anything awesome.

Ultimates wasn't my favorite thing ever but, I thought some of it was really fun and I liked some of the changes. I had some issues with inconsistency in the artwork and writing in ultimate X-men but otherwise it was a fairly enjoyable series. I'm still reading the rest of the Ultimate branches.
I can't ever think in this way. Good stories are good doesn't matter where they come from. Tbh I really hate this crap why is there a need to draw lines and divide? Just enjoy stuff as is.

DC. I love marvel but DC and vertigo just takes my heart
DC. I'm too old for Marvel's teen angst, and the constant "versus" storylines they've got going on. DC had me at 52, I found Blackest Night to be pretty epic, but I think I'm finding more enjoyment in that third category: whatever Alan Moore writes. Also, Warren Ellis's Planetary.
