Does your school provide anything for special needs? If not, start something. Lobby for some.

I commonly insult people by remarking how special or unique they are.

My personal favorite: "That's why you ride the SHORT bus!"

LOL *sigh* that never gets old. sweatdrop
About 3 people on the 3rd page seem to think this thread's purpose is to insult and ridicule disabled people. Except for a few idiots who've come through here posting something insulting (like someone on the first page) what we're doing is complaining about how political correctness has gone overboard. I really doubt the disabled people are going to be horrified if I insist on calling them disabled instead of differently abled.
some idiots back home liked to criticise other people who looked and appeared weak. a girl in a wheelchair came to our school hoping to find friendship, but somehow people started ridiculing her . and as i was a fellow victim of those stupid taunts, i acted as a shield and yelled at them that they were being cruel... what if they were the ones in the wheelchair??? they called her the 'girl with useless legs i think, but this is most accurate to what i remember and nevertheless, she proved them all wrong by doing better than them and even got high scores for exams.
so please stop insulting us, it ain't right!

'Special needs' is a stupid term. The meaning needs some kind of term, but 'special needs' is illogical. People who are in wheelchairs, wear glasses / hearing aids, have assma (I know that's spelt wrong) and are diabetic have special needs (weelchairs, glasses/hearing aids, inhalers, medicine) but are not 'special needs'.

That's because special needs grew out of special ed, when they needed a term for people who were out of the school system. Besides, working in special ed has taught me that people with LD's and Autism, ect... have special needs. To get the right answer, they may need to verbalize it, rather than write it down, for example.

Quote:

I REALISE that I am very bad at communicating with people, am attracted to other girls, am a slow runner and don't have good hand-eye co-ordination, and I don't care when people point it out. Even if they don't say 'Wellll, Cat's a tincy itty bit slow at running, but she's not BAD at it'. I am fine with. 'Cat's crap at running'.

You obviously don't spend time with the people on the short bus, do you?

They aren't just a little bad with whatever they are bad at, they are extremely bad. I have a girl right now, going into 7th or 8th grade, who is still struggling to count money. (on the other hand we have another girl who is about ready to leave the intensive special ed program we have, and go into a more relaxed version) They need help to get to whatever level they can achieve. With a good program, they are challenged and succede far better than if they are left to themselves.

however, differently-abled is stupid. Disabled works better. Special Ed/Special Needs is a good label, I think, because mentally challenged or retarded isn't always accurate.

I think you're missing my point in the second quote. However, thanks for pointing out where 'special needs' came from. smile

And what's the short bus? We don't have that term here.
natural selection.

that's all i have to say.
if it wern't for their 'caretakers,' they'd have died by now.

Ehh sorry. Part of me was ranting too.

As for short bus: many school districts bus the special needs students seperatly from everyone else, to cut back on the unsupervised enviroment for both groups. Since the SN kids are less, they generally have buses that are much shorter than normal buses. Hence the short bus became a euphemism for being less than mentally average.

Im such a sicko. It's even funnier when you explained it.

Anyway, I've stated a similar rant in another thread.
I don't care if you're handicapped in any which way, you're considered an equal to me. However, bust my chops and you'll get chased!!!
you know what? i am so sick and tired of all the stereotyping... just because a person is differnet does not mean that she or he can not do things a normal human can do... gonk

YES IT DOES.
a normal person can read. some heavily retarded people can't.
a normal person can run. someone with one leg can't.

Political correctness has gone mad. More often than not, the people screaming that it's offensive to say a word are NOT the ones supposedly being offended.

It's like how, a while back here in England, there was contention over the word 'manhole', because someone (god knows who) thought it was sexist. I mean, aren't there more important isses to consider?
