However, some AD/HD people are extremely dumb. And while I won't tell them they are geniuses, I encourage them to work harder by telling them they aren't stupid, and to work through the problem.
The geniuses, as you have, can fend for themselves, and do exactly what you said you'd do (which is what I did, too). My teachers expected so little that I'd get ignored, until they saw my grades.

He didn't say that the commercial said 'genius', though- he said smart. Generally, being smart usually entails some work. Smart people have to learn somehow- either by reading, or doing their work, or paying attention in class, and applying themselves. The ones who don't generally eventually fail due to poor study habits- I've known plenty of whiz kids who took for granted that they'd succeed, never applied themselves, and flunked spectacularly in high school and college, while 'regular' kids and even many of the learning disabled kids (not all- some were, and continued to be, stupid- but at least they were encouraged) had good marks and became very successful in their careers.

Yeah, I know a lot of those too. Especially LD kids, since I work with them at both of my jobs.
It's langauge changes. Nothing bad is happening. Sure, you can laugh at the title handicapped people have. Just for the record, the correct term for a handicapped person is "differently abled." Most titles people make up just so they can tease them and cover it up. Just because they're different, doesn't mean they're not equal to you or me. They are and some day you'll have to realize it. Handicapped people can do everything that everyone else can do.

By the way, Shunt. You're an a*****e.
I was reading through most of the posts and I think if I was disabled I'd be so offended!!!! My mom worked with them and just because they are different doesn't mean you should call them 'retarded' and a 'spaz' but I think calling them 'special' and that sort of stuff is going a bit far. Its like when they called black people coloured and all that. Its horrible and offensive

You should see what special ed teachers think of their students. s**t, I'm just an aide and I spend half my time laughing at something the kids did. Hoorary for 6 LD girls and 5 autistic boys, for they provide entertainment while I work with them.

(however, unless their IQ is at that level, don't call someone retarded. Even then, use it as a medical term)
I'm sorry, I didn't really read all that you said, I just tried to get the general direction of what you were saying. You see, I'm an ADHD victem, or in your words "A hyperactive little pain in the a** who needs to shut the f*** up and pay attention." Hehe, that was fun to say. I like your way better. *Walks off to find a three legged horse to tease it*

Ack, Autistic kids arn't funny, they're annoying, socially defective, and quite often just plain obnoxious. I'm actually Autistic myself, I suffer from Asperger's Syndrome which is a borderline Autism thing. I hate my own friggen guts a bunch of the time, but I actually manage to fit in socially. I'm just babbling on and on about stuff, but what can you expect?

Pah, my twin brother is autistic, and over half of my family fits somewhere on the Autism/ Aspergers spectrum disorder. I work in special ed, as well as my mother.

Trust me, my boy that repeats, "I'm surrounded by streetrats!" is funny, the one who's voice changed but still speaks in a falsetto is funny. The way the another runs is funny. The things my brother says are funny. Maybe it's just my experience, but I'd rather find them funny than defective.

And you aren't autistic. You're Aspergers. Same spectrum, different disorder. Hey, you know what they called Aspergers before it was named? Eccentricism. Nifty huh.
i am an autistic person too. in my old school, people used to call me idiot even when i had an A in english and good marks for science. i also did not like to talk and i was called the mute idiot. and one day, someone ridiculed my mother and that was when i lost it... and besides being called a retard... something else was added to that word to make it more rude than ever... that someone said..."your mother is awful and you are a f@#$%^g retard..."that was what made me mad. they can insult me, but not my mother...
uhm, if that was too long, i was just ranting... sweatdrop

Now those kids, are stupid. I'm sorry they did that to you and your mother. That's malicious.
i also have another problem. my teachers have taken to label me as a stupid student... sigh! even teachers are influenced??? gonk and you are right... i think mine is asperger's (but i think my psychiatrist mixed it up... and said it is mild autism... or some other crap...) because of this stupid autism/ asperger thing, some people called me many names in the past.... stressed this should stop... it is rude!
my art teacher was informed of my autism/ asperger thing and was convinced that i had no talent. now, in my new school, life and the students are better. i have also made plenty of friends. but let me say this... never say anything bad about my parents... they love me as any other parent would love their children.

Yeah, sure that 'politically correct' s**t is rather annoying, though, some words have veered into being a negative term, okay, like, there are both negative and positive words for everything, like, calling somebody fat- be it true, is still negative, hem, well, another example would be describing an old lot as uneventful, small, rustic, and the yard is filled with overgrowth- or, you could call it a cozy, quiet, and unique home, with the yard teeming with wooded area. Those both describe the same thing- though, from different points of view, and really- who the hell are any of you to make fun of people who cannot help for what they are? I'm sure they hate being 'different' they want to be like 'normal' people, and really, being handicapped does not make them bad people- be it a physical deformity or a mental retardation, it is NOT their fault, and just because they are not like you does not mean you are allowed to make fun of them- you shouldn't be making fun of ANYBODY for what or who they are.

SOMEONE missed the memo that long posts don't give you more gold...

* Smiles *

If a long post is needed for someone to get their ideas across, then it is perfectly acceptable, especially in the ED area.

Now it would be nice if more people used a bit of white space to separate the paragraphs. It would be even nicer if they avoided run on sentences and did a better job of capitalization and punctuation, if only to make the writing more legible.

Teachers are odd. They don't always know what to expect with special needs students. What does your IEP look like, do you know? When was your last meeting with your team? Maybe I'm just spoiled coming from a school district that has the best program in Illinois for special needs, but your teachers should never call you stupid just because of a disability. They are meant to encourage, not discourage.
