Welcome to Gaia! ::

Hey guys! yum_strawberry

I love books with plot twists, a good story line that leaves you with MANY things to think about after you've finished the book and an overall sad, depressing, completely heartbreaking start, middle and end. Call me twisted, but I like what I like.

Any suggestions?
I've read things like Go ask Alice, Sing me to sleep, As meat loves salt, The black tower trilogy etc. Just to name a few whee

All suggestions are welcome as I will read just about anything!
Please and Thank-you in advance heart

1984 by George Orwell. So nicely written, but the ending makes you want to read about kittens and rainbows and how all is right in the world. crying
I love to read books with depressing endings. The current novel I'm writing, AngelRose, has a sad ending. The link is in my sig if anyone wants to read it. I'd appreciate it.
Lucas by Kevin Brooks is a very sad little novel if you haven't read it yet. It's even more disturbing because it kind of disguises itself at the beginning as a cute coming of age story only to take a really dark turn.
The 12th book in The Dresden Files had me crying in school in front of all my friends. I literally just broke out into tears in the middle of lunch.

The Girl With the Glass Feet by Ali Shaw: It's a generally bleak book as far as plot, but the prose is vivid, imaginative, and well written, finding its basis in myth. I cried ridiculously hard at the end and had to read it again later.

We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver:
It's written as a diary of a woman writing to her husband, detailing letter by letter her experience of raising their sociopath son, and the repercussions of his eventual school shooting. It's heartbreaking, honest, and will leave you feeling pretty raw throughout.

Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes:
This is a short story about a mentally disabled man who undergoes a medical treatment meant to raise his IQ exponentially, but there is unexpected tragedy involved. The book sheds a lot of light at the cost and the value of self awareness, love and loss.

I can list more later. It's midnight here and my brain is right fried.

Can't believe no one's mentioned Of Mice and Men yet... or, well... yeah, pick any Steinbeck.

Actually, though -- The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. So good, then I finished it... I haven't cried that much since I went to see City of Angels. sweatdrop

I initially included both of those but I thought of Mice and Men might not appeal to her judging by the books she mentioned before. Though, I'm all for the expansion of genre appreciation. I personally love Steinbeck.

Anything by Audrey Niffenegger tends to be intrinsically sad but I've always found a sort of solace in her endings. Time Traveler's Wife is incredibly sad but heartwarming. Even the ending in Her Fearful Symmetry should be sad, but the character finds contentment in her tragedy.

It's very short, but Matchless will rip out your heart pretty thoroughly. For older books, Flowers in the Attic is all sorts of messed up, though I'm not entirely sure if you can actually find it anymore.

Hm, I might have to take a look at some of those... I did think Time Traveler's Wife was pretty much awesome, and I could totally see why it got the screenplay treatment so quickly (which, incidentally, I've never seen -- they almost always disappoint, anyway, especially in comparison to the book).

I loved it too 3nodding I thought the film was well made, though they did leave out Clare's history with Gomez. Of course, that would have stunted the romance.
