... What is your immediate reaction?

When I say coloured hair I mean the kind of unnatural colours scene kids and whatnot dye their hair with.

I was thinking about dyeing my hair black with a bit of light blue, but when I asked my boyfriend about it, he said, "I dunno, when most people see someone with coloured hair (red, blue, green, purple) they automatically assume that the person is emo/goth."

But the thing is, I don't wear makeup at all. No eyeliner, nothing. Which, in my opinion, sets me apart from the emo/goth/scene stereotype.

And coloured hair doesn't make you look emo. At all. Just look at Anya Goy. In my opinion, she doesn't look emo or anything close to that.

So, RLF&S, what's your opinion on this?

Considering that a huge number of people have colored hair, natural and unnatural colors alike, it's hard to judge.

If you don't like it, don't do it. But don't make assumptions about people based on what color they chose to dye their hair.

I have purple hair. Have had it for a good 2 years. I'm the furthest thing from a scene kid you'll ever see. If your boyfriend is that shallow, maybe it's time to find a new one.

I was called scene once because apparently when I walk into a room I "cause a scene." I was like "b***h please, I cause a scene because I'm hot. talk2hand "
Depends on how it's done.
If it looks shitty and their hair is all fried, I'm going to think it's ugly & they have no idea of what they're doing. jkasjldjsjdgfj you have no idea of how i felt when I saw a girl at Target yesterday who coontailed her entire ******** head. darkdark brown with frizzy blonde horizontal stripes.

It all depends, because some stuff makes me think, "What were they thinking???" Other times, I'm really jealous, because it looks awesome. I'm too attached to my natural color to bleach my hair & that's the only way "color" would stay in my hair. emo

He's actually right, to a certain degree. A lot of people do make those kind of assumptions about people with unnaturally colored hair. I wouldn't say blonde and brown have those stereotypes, though.
Not that that should deter you. If you want black and blue hair, go for it. The only things that should stop you are jobs and interviews - you do have to worry about how people view you in those situations sometimes.

Personally, I loved colored hair. But you gotta bleach your hair(If it's dark) to make it look nice. Once I tried to do my bangs hair this really nice blue without bleaching it, because my mother wouldn't let me bleach my hair, and it came out a really icky green the first time. Couple days later I dyed it again. It came out a little bit nicer, closer to the teal color i wanted, but it still wasn't the best. So if you're ok with bleaching go for it. Doesn't mean you emo. But it does make you look like you want attention(And that's not always good.)

Well my hair is currently black and pink (black is my natural colour, I'm too lazy to deal with roots).

I don't think I've ever heard anyone refer to me as a scene kid though, which is actually kinda surprising since I hang out with a number of scene kids and ravers.

Honestly, one time this middle-aged rather conservative-looking lady was walking by me in the park and stopped and said, "I like your hair! Did you do that yourself? It's very tasteful!" That's the general reaction I get from people, including great aunts and grandparents. People always say it's stylish and I think they mean in a fashionista chic kinda way, which actually kinda makes me sad 'cause I was going for a more edgy look. sad Ah well, I like it smile
It depends on the quality of the dye job, the style the person dresses and how they carry themselves.

I've had my hair burgundy before, but I have a slightly preppy/girly casual style of dress.
One of my friends said I looked like a rebel librarian.
:/

I was 15 then, good times, good times...
I like it. Wich is weird because I think people kind of group me in with preppy dress style and stuff. I like it though. I would do it myself if I didn't love my natural hair color.

If they're in high school or under I laugh and think about how bad it looks and how they'll regret it one day.

If they're out of high school I shake my head and wonder where their parents went wrong with the common sense and responsibility thing.
Does that apply only to unnatural colors? Or natural ones as well?
Depends.

I usually either say "Oh pretty! I wish I could pull that off!" or "Ew, tryhard"

It really isn't the hair by itself. Just overall how the person looks and dresses. Also the shade of the color usually matters. I like a darker, more subtle pink rather than a really bright, ugly pink.

its not so much about haircolor as it is about hair style. The hair style/cut itself can determine how its gonnna look. If you have a choppier/edgier hair style with colored hair people will think scene. That's my opinion though, i guess.

Also, personal style is a huge aspect of that. On a regular day, I'd say I dress more "girly" than anything else. Nobody has ever called me emo or anything. They don't actually even give me a label which I think is pretty nice.
I'll be frank in saying most of the time, I think it looks trashy and I don't like it.

I know that it depends on the quality of the job, the person wearing it, blah blah blah, and sure, I've seen exceptions to my general opinion where I go "holy s**t, that hair's gorgeous", but it's not even close to often enough to make a difference in my thoughts of unnaturally dyed hair as a whole.
Devilishly Rotten

I agree, most of the people I see with unnaturally colored hair look pretty trashy.
If you want to dye your hair an unnatural color, get professional help.
That way, they apply it correctly and you have a less chance of messing up. They can also tell you if that color is going to actually look good on you. I have seen so many girls with fire engine red hair and it doesn't look right. The same with pink, blue and most pastel shades.

But, as someone who has dyed her hair a billion colors, I can't say I'm against coloring your hair unnatural colors.
