This belt and this dress? How do I tone down a formal dress?

Well im not sure if its formal or not, but i want to dress it down a bit,
i tried a bulky cardigan, and a brown belt, but im not sure it goes anymore?

The whole thing looks pretty casual to me. The dress itself isn't something I think would be appropriate for real formal functions, but it's great as a casual dress.

I would find a smaller cardigan, shorter, more fitted, less chunky knit. Looks cozy, though.

The dress doesn't look formal to me. Stripes is a casual pattern. The material looks jersey-ish too, which is also casual.

If you tie in the colour of the belt with matching shoes perhaps?

I don't think the white cardigan matches. I would lose it. But the rest of the outfit looks casual and fine how it is.

I would say since you have a large bulky coat over, wear a smaller belt over both the dress and the cardigan to cinch in your waist. For fall it'd look super cute with a beret with the same kind of fabric as the cardigan, tights and boots.
I'd try to incorporate maybe a pop of color with a scarf also.
But I would switch out the cardigan for maybe a cropped leather jacket, and wear it with a scarf, boots, tights and a beret.

And I agree, it's a very casual dress. A cropped jacket of some sort would look a lot better than the cardigan. The cardigan just needs to go away...forever. I like the design of the belt, but a different color would be better.
