HOLY s**t LOCKE IT'S YOU! I didn't know anyone else had an account. Add Thee Gartisan, too!
Hello. I'm still relatively new to steam punk, but I was hoping you guys could offer a bit of advice.

A friend of mine invited me to go with her to a steam punk convention in April, and I'd like to dress up. It doesn't have to be some extravagant costume, but I would like to try wearing something. Preferably something along a pirate motif.

I already have an awesome pair of black bucket top boots, and I normally just wear black skinny jeans with those. I was wondering, what are some decent things to wear for a first timer? I know that people generally don't like when gears show up in a costume unless they look like they're serving a purpose, and throwing on goggles for no real reason is also frowned upon. So what should I do? Maybe get a corset and a puffy pirate shirt to go under it?

Edit: Ideas for a hat would be nice too. Thanks in advance for anybody who has advice for me. I just don't know where to start. ^^;

Ever seen the cartoon Tale Spin? goggles and scarves are perfectly reasonable for airship pirates.
Wow, that office is amazing

I suppose that's true. Thanks. =)

Also, remember steampunk doesn't HAVE to be brown/brass. I'm partial to introducing splashes of bright colors or silver metals.

I'm aware of that. People just tend to stick with those colors because it's reminiscent of the sepia tones of Victorian era photographs.

If possible, I'd like to work with black, white, and blue. I do think some of the browns are pretty though.

I don't know if I'll be a bother, but please hear me out. I'm looking for this skirt, and I had posted a topic about it before seeking help. So far, it's been futile, though someone replied that this skirt looked to be steampunk. I can't say for sure, but if it is, maybe you could assist me. The skirt is actually from a singer named Lzzy who sings in a band called Halestorm. The photograph is from a poster handed out for their tour around the US, and I'm wondering if there was any way possible to get a skirt similar to one she is wearing. (I like the whole outfit actually except for the pointed-toe boots) Photograph

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

I've seen shirts like that at a store called Forever21 from time to time.
if you find a shirt you like in white or other colors and wish to sepia it up a little tea-staining it a steampunk's bestfriend. Also, remember to thoroughly scrub the tea out of your bathtub afterward or use a plastic tub for your clothing staining projects.

Does anyone know any steampunk literature? I really like reading and I feel like steampunk books would be very interesting. Or movies, I like those too. Books moreso, but movies are cool too.

I'm sorry, this was probably asked before throughout the thread. I just don't feel like searching through almost 500 pages haha.

Any Victorian sci-fi writers like Jules Verne or H G Wells, I know there are more modern books like The Difference Engine or Leviathan but I don't know the authors sweatdrop
