This is nice too.

Any ideas what I can add onto such a theme without taking away from the traditional wears?

whoa that is tight
but then again, I'm sure there were some steampunk technology in asian culture
for example,
in the late Japanese Edo period, karakuri dolls were mechanized puppets

There were the 4 great inventions of China as well.

Paper making, compasses, printing, and....wait for it...GUNPOWDER.

Yeah, the Japanese have very nifty things. Their army was famed for keeping katana even in WWII times, maybe swords can even be incorporated?

I can't think of anything in terms of clothing though, props are becoming hardcore in my mind.
Don't forget medicine. Refer back to my qipao post for clothing ideas.

I have attempted that type of weapon with Steampunk

Don't forget that the blade needs to be a bit thinner, and with a slight curve to it. I wonder if you could just mod a cheap one from Chinatown. . .
If you made it curve, the drill action wouldn't work properly though, because the end of the blade would swing too far out. Unless I'm totally misinterpreting the instructions.

Wouldn't friction in the hilt just make the hilt heat up?

The Chinese invented pasta and ice cream too. heart

Well, honestly, there'd be no point in having a spinning katana, anyway, as a majority of the motions/moves used in traditional swordfighting would not be conducive to a drilling motion, not to mention negate the beauty of a katana's ability to make a perfectly clean cut/slice. With this in mind, one would assume that a spinning katana would be a purely fantasy-based weapon. However, without the characteristic curve, a katana ceases to appear as such, and becomes a standard-looking single-edged sword.

That aside, it is an interesting idea for a weapon.

The type of Katana that is, is the Samurai type not the traditional common one. there is a heating coil inside of it, and you also have to wear certain type of gloves to hold it, but the whole point of it spinning is the fact of not swinging the sword but impaling your enemies or just a simple Drill action in it. As for the hilt you have to either make an extra coating of Leather with a coolant on the inside. Just to let you know, right now its a prototype.

Katanas can be straight or curved, alot of people like to look at the Katana as it would be curved, but Samurai mostly used Straight Katana, until later, adapted the curve of the blade for a more edge in cut and slice.
I thought it looked more like a wakazashi or a kodachi; shorter swords and probably better suited to stabbing rather than slicing.

Having the thing heated would give one an excellent legitimate excuse to wear a massive pair of leather welding gloves though

wakazashi would be nice for this

but I had a friend of mine do a different view of it.

This one however has the curve, but I am still in prototype phase of my project, the hilt itself might get bulky but of couse most things start out big and end up being smaller.

We even did a Gaia version of it.
