The sketches look lovely! Copper and Burgundy sound nice, so I agree with Percival.
For the second one, because I like the Mad Max thing, I would suggest multi-tonal dark and medium browns, with a lot of distressing on the leather and detailing to make it look like you've been traveling in it. And I would probably use brass studs and buckles for the trim you've drawn. And maybe some old, ratty antique lace for your sleeves and skirt hem? Just an idea.

Oooh, I like that idea. I'll see what I can do with that.. I've got limited marker colors. But i'll think of something. ^^
Alright guys, I need help! blaugh

One of my guy friends is gonna model for me at the Con fashion show, but he's only just learned about Steampunk and is a bit tentative about making an outfit. He wants to "look better than everyone else there." He's also a welder and really proud of that, and normally he dresses in a gothic/punk fashion and has an aristocrat outfit for when going out with his Lolita gf [but which is not terribly suitable for Steampunk].

I've been trying to put together an outfit for him, and so far it's going very well, except for a few hitches:

I'm trying to find a pair of pants that would work for his everyday goth attire as well and that aren't three-quarters/capris, etc. and I'm falling short of anything remarkable.

I'm also looking for a relatively cheap, military-inspired long coat. Something much like this, but less expensive than that particular piece's asking price of $315.

Also, anything welding-inspired [including goggles, like the boxy ones rather than the typical round style]
Would a pair of plain black pinstripe pants work? I know quite a few gothy boys that wear them. If not, he could just throw on a few chains and whatnot.
Try the ummm... I believe it's.... Uuuh... Limebarb.com That's an Anime Costume shop type thing, but they might be able to make something like what you're looking for. razz *Loves Steam Punk, but is too cheap to save up over $100 for a coat he'd be worried about ruining*

Limebarb has good quality, but I'd order way in advance if possible. A friend of mine ordered from there before and they came only right at the very last minute.

Since 315$ is too much these probably will be too, but I'm going to go ahead and suggest them. >>"

This one's about 265$.
So, probably out of the price range. D:

Less buttons, but it costs less.
Only by 65$ Though.
But that is nearly 1oo$ difference.

There's lots of excellent coats at Fanplusfriend. This coat in particular is my favorite but this would work as well.

As for pants, perhaps these?

Question, all.
Would it be acceptable steampunk for me to wear only a faux leather pirate's hat, no embellishments, with a steamy outfit?

Faux leather is better than real leather in my opinion ('cause I'm vegan) but some people will say otherwise.

There are many leather-substitute materials that do quite well.

I think sometimes it comes down to being pro-cow or pro-environment.

Real leather is bad for cows but not damaging to the environment.
Artificial leather (PVC and the like) is bad for the environment but good for cows.

I tend to go for real leather, personally. It lasts longer and, while organisations like the RSPCA can guarantee that my shoes lived a happy life before taking a career change, it can't be guaranteed that the petroleum used in the production of plastics was obtained and processed in an environmentally sound manner.

But then there's the fact that you are wearing something else's skin, which I think a lot of people know but don't really realise, if that makes any sense.

I like going to thrift stores and buying old leather to reuse in projects. Same with fur-anything. That way, you still get to use the real thing without the guilt of hurting the environment or contributing to the killing of more animals.

Thank you for the help, but I'm gonna have to decline. Don't ever use them! I used them once for a pair of replica boots and it was the biggest waste of money in my life. xd

Yes, that's what I've been thinking smile

That's one of the sites we've been looking at for inspiration, but the con is in a few weeks so there's not enough time to order from them. Thank you, though!

I will attempt to refrain from getting into the long, involved debate over the fact that leather is not any better for the environment than plastics/PVC and that "happy life" is quite the illusory and/or misleading claim in the same league as free range, etc., [previous statement excluded, please forgive me].

For me, it's definitely the "wearing something's skin" part. Otherwise I wouldn't take issue with vintage leather/fur, but I still can't bring myself to use it. I'm not a fan of plastics at all, but at least they don't make my skin crawl.

As you essentially said, to each their own.

Agreed. Plus, with many thrift stores you're also supporting charities blaugh and the whole recycling/reusing/etc. aspect of the diy ethic/punk ideology, etc.
