Welcome to Gaia! ::

I was a bit disappointed with the Threadbanger series. It didn't look quite refined enough. It was a bit too home-made, if that's possible. And it was so short.

So I watched the threadbanger tuts just now.
I agree with Risu.
Too short and really uh, generic?

I mean, on the "Whole outfit" one, he just tacked a 'breastplate' shape and Epaulets with silver buttons on a shirt.
It was really bland imo.

I love steampunk stuff. heart
Do you guys have any suggestions for steampunk-themed manga or anime? I know a lot of regular books, but no manga (and well, I've been out of the manga/anime loop for a while). I figure it would be a good source for steampunk fashion inspiration (among the other things you list). I am really thrilled I found this thread btw smile

I've heard of steampunk but never seen any pictures. Now I have, and I love it. heart
I'm not subscribed to this? What an oversight. I like to check up on this thread once in a while to see the links to pretty clothing.

Freakangels and Girl Genius fit that pretty well in my opinion.
Though I only read Freakangels.

thanks so much. Freakangels looks cool so far.
I think I may have found a light for my hat. I just moved home from Lancaster and the house is full of stuff, so I always end up knocking things over or walking into things in the dark when I'm trying to go to bed without waking everyone up, so the lamp will be useful.

Anyway, I found this one (the desert version) and I think it looks quite good, although it's a bit pricy at £38 including P&P. It's got a tiltable LED torch on a bracket though, which should be handy.

Looks a good deal steamier than the competition too.

Good idea/bad idea?

Looks like a good Idea to me.
And it comes with filters which could be fun.
Were you going to just use the headlamp part or everything?

I'll probably be in Central FL for my birthday weekend. When's Necronomicon? whee

October 10-12

"This would be my first year attending Necronomicon [you lured me in with the theme!] so I'm not sure what the venue is like or what resources would be available, if any, other than just the space to sit. One really important thing I would need to know is a ballpark estimate of how many people usually attend these panels.

I'm toying around with the idea of picking people from the crowd and having them stand up and explaining how they could 'steampunkify' [XD sorry] what their already wearing, but I'm not sure about this idea yet for a number of reasons.

Please give me some opinions! What I am missing, etc.

The attendance for Necronomicon varies from year to year. It will defiantly be smaller a smaller affair then Metrocon, this year they are limiting the attendance number to 900. I don't know how big the actual convention area will be since they are moving into a new hotel this year.

Why not pick out people that are wearing steampunk clothing, ask them to stand up, and point out what pieces make their clothing steampunk (use of metals, color schemes, victorian accessories, use of ruffles/rouching, hats, etc). I would recommend speaking with them before the panel starts and asking if they would like to be models. They might even be willing to describe some of the work they put into making there clothing.

Depending on how much time you have, maybe you could have a brief Steampunk Fashion Contest, a quickie costume contest. Necronomicon usually gives out ribbons for different costume and art events, perhaps you could ask them if they would like to provide a ribbon or two for a steampunk themed fashion contest that could occur at your panel.
I was going to use the headband as well, since it's made to support the torch. Anything else might not be sturdy enough and I know it fits around my hat because I'm wearing one right now (an older style though).

If it doesn't look quite right, I'm sure I could customise the headband to suit my needs.

It's rather bright too, certainly enough to illuminate my path through the dark, urban forests of London my house.

Still debating about the price though. There are a few which will do the same thing for cheaper but they're all garish, horrible colours. (£38 = $68 at current exchange rates.)

I generally like Threadbanger but the steampunk episodes were really disappointing. I think they could easily have done better.
