Oh ok. Thank you for the explanation. I didn't quite grasp it until you splained.

Speaking of understanding, I don't get that tutorial. I may just swoop up one or two of those cheap shirts and experiment on them. >w<

*cries in the corner, for now there is nothing I can afford*

This is REALLY depressing, I don't think I can even get Anna House with this kind of money that I'm making.

Can I ask a question on my dress? owo'

of course :3

also, I am freaking raging at Stacy and Clinton right now neutral

I liked them until today.
I love how Stacy said it's only a fashion in Japan.
I GUESS I SHOULD GO BACK TO NEW YORK NOW.

Look at you and your sweet self. Lol, still getting used to it after knowing you as that 'is amazing as jpunk' girl.
Like all your pandas btw. Just noticed them in the backround.

Suspicious::
I hope your stuff is received in great shape. I'm completely in love with the high waisted skirt i got from f+f recently, so even though I'm cautious, I'll still use them.
I like your dress btw.

haha xD yeah, it is quite the drastic difference...I dunno, I just don't find joy in J-punk anymore, really ;__; I turned all girly lol

and thanks :'D I collect pandas, obviously...they're all over my room~ >w< [and frogs - I've actually got more frogs than I do pandas xD]

I'm girly yet i wear VK clothes for boys & girls too. Weird... xd

^w^ thank you very much

well,I'm afraid that someone will think my dress is cosplay since I wear kitty ears with it,but I am not fond of the lace headdresses that seems to be common in alot of lolita pictures I've seen

Here is my outfit (>W< ignore my ugly face please, i take HORRID pictures)

the horror DX

so i took a picture of me with my darling parasol that my fiance bought for me
but its kind of dark

.w. see

>w< I'm really worried that my outfit looks to cosplayish already since i got it off of bodyline
but i was trying to find something classical/gothic-ish

D: so what do you think?

The dress on its own looks just fine. smile

The cat ears, on the other hand, are a costume item. And so, they make the rest of your outfit look like a costume. If you do not like lacy headdresses, there are many forms of headwear that are acceptable for Lolita. Or, just style your hair nicely.

There are round headdresses, heart shaped headdresses, standard rectangular headdresses (available with head eating lace, or very subtle and classical), there are bows in every size imagineable, there are floral hair combs, there are miniature hats (miniature tophats, miniature straw hats, etc), there are full sized hats, there are berets (sweet or classical), there are headbands, and there are bonnets (full, or half bonnets, sweet or classical).

Look here for hair tutorials.

My mother watched it with me, and kept going "But that dress was so cute!!"
Especially toward the Anna House dress that they were really bashing.
She just shook her head at the BS about being a costume/only a fashion in Japan, and the idiocy about fetish wear. She loves the modesty and timeless feel of Lolita, like I do. So them saying "Ohhhh~ This dress is going to be so timeless, and classy," was lolable. Modern western fashion changes every week.
lol it's a fashion in Japan but anywhere else it's a costume.
The fetish thing always annoys me. Like "DO YOU KNOW WHERE THE TERM LOLITA COMES FROM. YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY AN IDIOT IF YOU THINK YOU'RE NOT A CHILD PROSTITUTE"
I'm just sick of that argument in general. They act like we're all stupid when they don't get the simple idea that words can have different meanings, can change meanings, and can be used wrong.
We don't even know that whoever called it lolita was actually a lolita. I'd be willing to be it wasn't.
After a few cigarettes and some thinking, I've decided to put on my big girl panties and learn to sew.

Luckily, egl has some patterns I can wrap my retarded head around. Plus, they have a way to convert pointy collared things into peterpans with ease! Meaning no sewing diagrams, those things are Greek to me. xP

Now, what fabric types are easier to hand sew but won't look like shyt?

Also, does anyone know if that WNTW has made it to youtube yet? xD

The big Nabokov debate is so old. Dolores was the name of the girl in the book Lolita. Nabokov's character Humbert specifically used the term nymphet to describe his obsession: sexually precocious, attractive young girl. Humbert was an unreliable narrator, unstable, and how he viewed young girls was perverted in that their sexuality was primarily within his mind. It had little to do with a girl's actions, because his obsession began far, far, far before when she consciously seduces him (Well into the book, he attempts to drug her so he can molest her, but they have no effects. The next morning, she seduces him and reveals that she was also involved with a boy at camp. After this, he tells her that her mother is dead and essentially kidnaps her. During this time, they live between motels, and he frequently bribes her for sexual favors, even if he is aware that she does not reciprocate his feeling for her or share any of his interests. However, Humbert is also entirely unaware of her mentality as another human being).

Nabokov stated that he saw Lolita as the hero in the story when she freed herself from Humbert. But the public preferred to use and associate her name with nymphets. Most of the people who are so adamant upon how filthy the name/term is are usually people who have never read the book.
I'm really curious about this episode of What Not to Wear that has been discussed here, but I don't have cable. Is it online anywhere--even a clip? I've tried searching for it, but "what not to wear lolita" really isn't bringing up any results.

Not the usual Lolita, since she is African American.

um, yeah...what? :/

I am not saying anything bad, jsut that where I live, we have a LOT of lolitas, but I have never seen any African american. Maybe just the area I am in there isnt that many.
I dont have an ideal on lolita, but yes, most people who are in it are NOT black. It is a shame, but it is what happens.

I think the only problem with the girl on the show is that she has only dresses. Tha tis fine, but it is HARD if not impossible to make it work in a work attire. If she had shirt and skirt attires, it would be easier. Take 1 lolita top and match it with a professional skirt or pant, or the other way around.

Well, a lot of people, THINK of them as fetish wear, even if the wearers dont. It is like a school girl outfit. Some time you are forced to wear it to school, but it can easilt be a fetish, even if oyu dont know anything.

I'll be going to Jo Ann's today, hoping to find some nice fabric to make either a skirt or even bows and other accessories. <3
When I showed my mother some reconstruction tutorials, she's also been thinking of using old clothes and reconstructing them, so I'm kind of giddy to know she's at least a little bit interested in this.
My sister calls me jailbait for talking about bloomers. rolleyes

Hm. I've actually never thought about it that way. I haven't read the book, but I've seen so many people debating about it that I kind of know what happens.
It's interesting to look at it in terms of Lolita escaping from Humbert, which would make the fashion seem more anti-***** than anything.
But I think whether or not Lolita was at fault, the term has come to mean "sexually precocious young girl". Even if it wasn't Nabokov's intention.
I just doubt that the orignal wearers of the fashion were even thinking about that. I mean, the way people talk about it, it's as if they think a bunch of girls in Japan were like "Hey I just read this book called Lolita about some *****. Let's make a fashion and name it that." That's really what annoys me. It's so easy for something to be given a misleading name that I think the name is pretty insignificant. And that seems to be what most people object to.
So yeah. Either way, the whole debate gets really annoying.
Yeah, I'm waiting for my family to get interested in my sewing projects (once I start them, xD), and ask what it's for. Then they'll google 'lolita', and dear sweet jesus and buddha, I REALLY must show them what it actually is.....
