Welcome to Gaia! ::

Hey guys. :]

I've always loved playing around with clothes and style, but as much as I wish I could say " I don't give a s**t about what people think," Getting strange stares, and being snapped photos of in public is just.. Sort of unnerving.

But then again, it only means I dress up when I have a bunch of friends to do it with. xD Right now I'm sort of stuck between styles. I love japanese fashion, and used to dress up alot between punk and aristocrat. But I've toned down alot, sadly. And now I'm a little afraid I might just drop into mainstream fashion because of age, and work.

Technowolf -- I totally agree with you. It's really hard to find a balance between practical stuff and good style. >: Sometimes I'd really wanna wear something but then it would be hard to move about in, and hot with all the layers. And I end up taking it off, it gets frustrating after awhile.

Does anyone have any tips on how I could keep my preferences without looking over the top and still be able to wear old clothes during daily life? x'D
Can has photos if you need them.
I've got plenty of blazers and vests. lol
Plus I really love androgeny. 8D

Well when it comes to fashion and finding your own style, learning to just say ''f*ck it'' and do whatever you want to do, otherwise it'll show in your appearance.

Of course dressing up with friends is always funnier than dressing up alone, and if you dont feel comfortable dressing up alone, then you can try dressing with just one friend instead of several, and see if you still feel comfortable, and then after a while then try to do it on your own and see how it feels then. The styles you've mentioned are styles that'll mostly draw attention to you and your look, but its easy to tone it down for daytime and then dress it up for nighttime, or for when youre having fun with your friends, its just about finding the neccesities (sp?) and then building it around that to a daytime and a nighttime look, and then you can always use accessories to do it extra one day or simple the next day.

Concidering movability in fashionable stuff, its just about finding the stuff you like and then putting them together in something thats easily moveable in. You dont neccesarily need 10 layers to pull off a good punk or lolita look. You can look just as punk, goth, lolita, or whatever you're going for with the right pieces as you can with several layers. Its a simple meassure of finding the right mix and match of fabrics, colours, and layers.. I'll see if i can find some pics of myself in my fav summer outfits that are easy to move around in, so you can see what i mean ^^

I really love this thread. biggrin
Hahaha.

I'm still trying to figure out my own style, but I think I'm slowly getting there.
Haha.

What I really dislike is that skinny jeans have become a huge trend. >.<
And they're the only jeans that fit me right, so I always try to make them a little different by buying them from other stores (Delia*s has recently become my favorite) and dressing them up or down with whatever I can find. ;D

I used to wear graphic tees a lot (which I still have quite a few, but I mostly wear them at home), and now I switched to having just plain colored tees with scarves, random jewelry, different sweaters/flannels/hoodies.

It just sucks that so many things have become a trend. >.<

I always wanted to do more of a Visual Kei style, but I'm limited on where I can buy things and I'm really short on money. gonk
DemonicSmurf -- I guess I'm just not that brave, because like you said, the outfits do get quite abit of attention. Sometimes it's just not the appreciative sort. So at least with a bunch of friends you've got some company. x'DD But then again looking awkward in what you're wearing is even worse than if you looked different, but confident. The problem is when I dress down, it's more difficult to see what kind of look I'm trying to get, and it turns out looking more mainstream than anything.
Yes, pictures please! It's always summer here, so light outfits would be really helpful. :3

Maybe I could take some pictures of my clothes and you could give me some suggestions?

Oblivious Paperclip -- Visual Kei stuff can be relatively cheap to get if you go offbrand. Instead of buying from popular VK/punk brands, look closely at the designs, then go out shopping. Sometimes you can get similar items at regular stores, and usually at much cheaper prices. Also, you can think about making simple modifications to clothing, such as adding chains, ruffles, etc to give it a more vk feel.

A big part of VK is actually the makeup and hair, so if you can have that done, it'll already take you half the way.

I was thinking about trying to do that.
Do you know of any offhand?

And I'm waiting for my hair to grow out before I go all out. Haha.
Kirimasu_ -- looking confident is half the look really when it comes to punk. You can dress up in all the big brands and look like something out of a magazine, but if your confidence doesnt show, then it'll never work. That goes for all styles though, and not just punk. Whether you're trying to be visual kei, punk, preppy or gangsta or whatever if you dont look confident it wont look good no matter what.
Confidence also helps with keeping people a bit away, because most of the times people who call you names and stuff will leave you alone if you look like whatever they're saying doesnt affect you.
Finding the right balance between dressing up and dressing down, but still keeping your own style can be hard to get right, but it is possible. It takes practice but so does everything else, you just gotta play around and figure it out as you go along.
I'll see if i can get some pics done the next couple of days then, and mix them up a bit with dressed up and dressed down, but still summerlike.

Oblivious Paperclip -- as Kirimasu said, you can just find cheap stuff and then change them a bit. One of my friends is a real big fan of the style, and she usually buys her stuff at second hand shops and then she goes home and changes it by putting whatever she wants on it, while being inspired by different pictures. One of the things i love about visual kei, even though i dont dress in the style, is that you can get away with so much and it'll still fit into the style. So many different styles are very closed and you cant play around with colours and fabrics that much, but its easier in visual kei.
If you want to find cheaper stuff other than at second hand stores, then try looking on different websites. Usually you can find loads of things on the internet ^^

DemonicSmurf -- I guess I really need to work on the confidence bit. x___x
Looking forward to the pictures. :]

Oblivious Paperclip -- I suppose it depends on what kind of visual kei look you want to get. Basically visual kei encompasses exaggerations of many different kinds of styles, Some of the brands I like oogling at are H.naoto, Black Peace Now, GLP, Alice and the Pirates, etc. What you can do is also just go to ebay or taobao (in mandarin, so you need to translate), type in some key words and do a quick search on other non-brand stuff.
There are a couple of LJ communities you can go to to get references on how others in the community put together their outfits as well. These pages can give you some ideas on what accessories to use, what types of looks to experiment with.

Thanks, you two.

I really like the second-hand shop idea, so I might look around in some of those. biggrin
This thread makes me smile =]
Hey all, just wanted to let you all know about the pics i promised to post.. I havent forgotten about them i've just simply been too busy with work and then i got this nasty kidney infection that i'm waiting for to go away, and then i'll put some stuff together, so i should have them up in hopefully less than 2 weeks smile
Phen, will you be doing fashion panels at NDK again this year?
I meant to go last year, but I didn't realize they'd be so popular and I wasn't so keen on standing in the doorway.

To be on topic, now, some examples of my own style:

I mix it up quite a bit.
I find it absolutely impossible and boring to stay with just one style.

I would describe my style as very laid back but also very functional. Jeans, v-necks, tank tops, flat and combat boots.

But I have a lot of neons, and I feel the pull of scene style... >.>

I need to go weed out my wardrobe, too bad I have no clue how to organize anything.

I dress pretty tomboyish and I don't want to anymore. I kinda want to dress more like
her
and
her.
Basically what's cute/popular now. But dressing like that just doesn't click in my mind. I've always been a jeans and tshirt person (tomboy since childhood). And besides all that, my problems are:
1) I'm plain. :/
2) I'm fat
3) I lack confidence
4) I'm broke D;

Number four is easiest to fix since I can save up, but how do I overcome the others (with exception to #2, that's an obvious fix)?
Any tips?

I'd wager that fixing 4 and 2 will take care of 1 and 3. If you feel better in your body and have less stress with money problems, you should feel better about yourself and how you look.
