Hey people of gaia, from what I understand there seems to be a fairly large gathering of seasoned Ragnorok Online players here. I've played a good amount of mmorpgs and none of them really fit my game play style and I hope RO can provide that.

Would anyone be so kind as to give me some advice to what I should start out as? Or even act as a guide through my RO experience? It would be greatly appreciated, and if all turns out well I could always offer my services within the game.

Information is a bit skewed in regards to proper guides even now, after the Renewal patch was applied (it changed a lot of the game mechanics, monster locations, etc). The most reliable source for information would probably be the official Warp Portal forums:

As for what you should start out as, based on my personal experiences, I would suggest either a Mage or Thief.

Mages get great range and don't require much in the ways of gear, and get access to the core elements to really dish out damage. It's a bit tough starting out since you run out of SP fast, but once you hit around the 30's or 40's you will barely ever have to rest to recover your SP. A mage that makes good use of their environment and utility spells, such as Firewall, will practically never be hit.

Thieves are melee characters that use daggers and, to be expected, are quick. They get skills such as Double Attack, which lets you hit twice 50% of the time with daggers when the skill is maxed, and Increase Dodge, which significantly helps your Flee stat on top of your Agility stat and level bonuses. At best, any character in Ragnarok can achieve a 95% dodge rate. They get respectable HP and decent armor. You'll deal lots of damage, quickly too, and rest less often than, say, a Swordsman.

Both of those classes are fairly self-sufficient and rather newbie friendly. Regardless of what your choice is, I wish you luck with RO.

I could copy and paste what myself and others have said in threads just like this one, but instead I'm going to just suggest that you look around the forum a bit. It's not like the threads move around much here, so I'm sure you can find them.

You could, but i'm looking for more then just advice. I was hoping for an early invite into a guild or even a few newbies that wouldn't mind taking on the adventure with me. wink

Oh, in that case, tell us what server you play on (provided it's not a private server, because Gaia doesn't like that).

I suggest you start with a melee character. I agree that theif is a good one to start with then make yourself a merchant to sell your items with and make Zeny. a monk is always a good character to create cause you can heal yourself and do good damage. never hunt anything that does more damage to you than you can deal out to it. and avoid crowded areas
