Try poking around and reading some updated guides about classes, specifically about stat/skill builds. As for which class you should start playing as, I would personally recommend a Thief or Mage. They're relatively low in cost and quite strong. If your computer can run two instances of the game at once (and you're playing the free version, unless you want to spend more money on a second account), I would recommend making a secondary account with an Acolyte to help heal and buff yourself.

What the other posters aren't telling you is that archers are only as good as their gear is.

When it comes to starting your first character, the easiest would be a thief, and second-easiest might be a mage, like was mentioned by someone else. Mages are not solo characters and rely a lot on other classes that can take damage for them and buff them, which is why thief is the easier of the two. (There are mages that can solo, but they have very expensive equipment.)

As a thief, you are able to use elemental daggers that are available from a NPC as soon as you are able to afford them (level requirement of 1 to equip, I believe), and they will last you for a long time. Ultimately, they will be replaced by blacksmith forged weapons once you become more wealthy. Flee-increasing equipment is relatively easier to come by compared to other kinds of equipment. These are the reasons why I would suggest going thief first. Not only that, but even after you decide to make your "main" character, you'll still find your thief useful for item farming using their Steal skill.

The easiest classes to start out with while your new is usually mage, archer, acolyte, in that order. With mage its very easy with no gear to level up. A naked mage still levels fast and while someone above said they rely on someone tanking for them not always the case for higher levels yeah it can have more demand or need for a tank but there are multiple ways of doing this without absolute need to have a tank babying you but it depends on your playing style. While archer does require buying arrows this is still easy accomplished and there's more then enough good weapons which can be either bought from other people or hunted for ranger also makes for a good hunting class at higher levels and can be used to solo in places like thors. And acolyte being another magic dependent class can heal bomb zombies pretty easy way to level up.

Thief still requires at least some gear it might be fine at lower levels but as you level up you'll hit a brick wall without some support of some kind.

Most other classes rely on gear or money to get them started. With that being said it also depends on the server your on I play a 20x pk server so at 70 then I have to watch out for people trying to kill me xD But yeah I was playing world of warcraft for awhile horrible game too :S
Favorite class is archer. Hands down.
I'd recommend picking an easier class at first to get a feel for the game, and then creating a second character when you've gotten a feel for what you like to do.

There are some classes that are really difficult to level or to get a hang off, so I'd save them for later. Such as Merchants and in my opinion Priests.

I'd say if you're a fan of the classic rpg, choose between swordsman, archer, or mage; depending on what you normally roll.

Swordies are typically easy to level on their own at lower levels, but you'll need a party once you're higher. I find the opposite true for mages. And archer class is a fair balance.
However; archers cost money because of arrows, and mages are squishy.

Always look for quests. There are tons and it makes the game so much more interesting.
Make friends, it's the best part of the game. <3
