New Issues

  • Fishing Captcha Messing Up August 22, 2008
    Words typed for fishing captcha are appearing in the chat section instead of in the captcha window, causing members to be unable to save their buckets.

    For now, this can be worked around by typing the words and then pasting them using the mouse (not keyboard shortcuts) into the appropriate location. This should allow you to save your fishing buckets.

    • Gaia Toolbar Update July 30, 2008

      A few days ago, users were prompted to update their toolbars. However, after doing so resulted in the loss of all Firefox Add-ons.
      A workaround to fix this is to re-download the toolbar from Gaia. Unfortunately, as of my typing this it seems to be offline. So if you lost your Add-ons, please sit tight till it comes back TwT; Sorry for the trouble this may have caused.

      A user has messaged me with another way to get your Add-ons working again, and one of our mods has tried it as well.

      • Game Item ErrorsJuly 15th, 2008
        Currently there has been a glitch that has resulted in some users accidentally having many game items. This should not have happened, and these items should not be spent or traded away, and instead you should keep them secure on your inventory. If users did deliberately take these items and use them for profit when it is clear that they were not legitimately earned on the site, then this is indeed a serious concern, and will need to be dealt with accordingly.

        However, if someone did sell them and you purchased them legitimately, then you have nothing to worry about. It may happen that your trades will be disabled, but this is simply so that we can contain the scope of the problem and possibly reverse trades later on, depending on how we proceed.

        Please be patient, and stay tuned for a more official notification from Gaia regarding these issues. ^^

          The bank as well as gift giving are disabled. We do not have an estimate as to when this will be fixed. We appreciate your patience in this matter.

            Currently, the site is suffering from some errors. These errors include avatar saving/dressing, inventory display and marketplace and sell back. These will be resolved as soon as possible. Please be patient.

            At this time, some people may be having log in issues. There are people with similar names to someone else (for example, Boxed Lunch would have issues logging in due to boxedlunch). If you have this issue, try logging in as your user number. To find this, find one of your posts and go to your profile. The user ID can be found on your profile page. The letters in red bellow are the numbers you will need to use as your user ID to log in. If you cant find your profile page, please try to search for it.

          • Gifting is temporarily down January 21th, 2008
            We've had to disable gifting from the inventory temporarily while we fix a problem we discovered. We hope to have it back and working tomorrow -- thanks for your understanding.

          • Event errors: December 20th, 2007
            The event is having some errors. When giving your orphan items, it often gives you an "error retrieving item" error. If you hit theback button and try again, it will work. It may take multiple tries. The event will last multiple days and users will have plenty of time to earn items. Please be patient.

          • Inventory/Equipping ErrorsDecember 20th, 2007
            Due to the increased event traffic, the site is having a few issues. When trying to customize your avatar, the screen is showing a greyed out avi. Also, inventory arranging is not working properly. These seem to be temporary issues. User are asked to not use the inventory arranger or customize screen if they are having these errors (for now at least)
          • Avatar Saving Lagging October 11th,2007
            At this time, avatar saving is either severely lagging or not saving at all. Users' customize me page will reflect that the avatar is saved but the user will not see the new avatar in towns or on the top of the page. We have no workaround for this at the moment. This is temporary. Please be patient.

          • Old Announcements July 20th, 2007
            Users are being notified of old announcements or have an announcement icon that will not go away. This is a known issue and we have no workaround for it at this time

          • Ignorelist Errors July 19th, 2007
            When trying to add someone to their ignorelist, users are getting a message stating that they cannot ad mods/NPC's to their ignorelist. This is just one of the current group of issues we are experiencing. No workaround is known at this time.

          • Guild Editing Issues July 19th, 2007
            Some guild captains/crew are reporting that they cannot edit the guild or engage in some other guild functions. This is temporary and is being looked iinto.

          • Forums Disappearing July 19th, 2007
            On occasion, forums are becoming unavailable. They either appear as if they do not exist or claim the user does not have the proper clearance. This is being worked on and is occurring intermittently throughout the entire site.


          • View my posts not working July 19th, 2007
            At this time, users cannot search their post histories. This is temporary and is being worked on

          • Customize me not WorkingJuly 16th, 2007
            Currently users are not able to dress their avatars. Man are seeing a broken image (red X) with going to the "customize me" page. There is no workaround at this time and users are urged to be patient.

          • Login troublesApril 30th, 2007
            Some users with special characters in their name ( [, ], _, ~, etc) are not able to log into their accounts. Using the password retrieval sometimes helps, although some users that have done this are getting immediately logged out. Please be patient until this is resolved

          • Townsand games not connecting April 30th, 2007
            Towns and games mostly work, although sometimes there are connection issues. Users are advised to try again later if this happens.

          • Profile Comments GlitchyMarch 16th, 2007
            Occasionally, when trying to comment on profiles, users are not able to do so. Sometimes it takes many tries to get a comment to go through, sometimes it does not go at all.

          • Users can't talk in TownsFebruary 2007
            Users with periods in their usernames are currently unable to talk in towns. At the moment, the only way to resolve this is to change your username to something without punctuation.

          • Bachelor Credit Exchange DownFeb 2007
            Users are not able to Exchange their Bachelor's credits in for the Graduation cap in Edmund's store. No work around or estimated time of resolution has been given at this time.

          • Activation and Email changing not working January 25th, 2007
            Re-sending your activation e-mail and changing your account's e-mail address are re-enabled and should be working fine. Use This Link if you need to reactivate your account.

          • Puzzles Issues January 20th, 2007
            Currently puzzles are occasionally not granting gold. Once the puzzle has been completed, the game says "granting gold" yet never does so. Currently we have no fix or workaround for this issue.

          • Database Issues October 28th
            There are currently issues connecting to some features, such as profiles and journals. We don't have an ETA as to when this will be fixed, but it's a known issue and will be looked into as soon as possible smile

          • "Remember Me" not working properly October 26th
            Some users have experienced that they do not stay logged in even thought they repeatedly check "Remember me".
            The admins and developers are aware of this and they're doing their best to try to solve this. 3nodding

            Update: This issue should have been resolved. Please clear your cache, cookies and saved password in order to make the feature function properly again.

          • Rare Inks cannot be made October 23rd
            It appears that users are not able to make rare inks, even when they have the necessary ingredients. No workaround is currently known for this issue

            Update: Users can now make rare inks again. Use the "Skin Tyte" store and go to Tattooing in order to mix inks again.

          • Starter Sets Not Being Issued on New Accounts August 15th
            For one reason or another, starter sets were glitched so any new account could not get them. Appears to be resolved.

          • Profiles Glitchy on Firefox August 15th
            Some users with Firefox are reporting that the new profile system is not working properly for them. For these users: please check how old your firefox browser is. For some reason the oldest versions do not seem to work properly! Downloading one of the newest versions seems to fix this, thankfully.

          • Messenger Details in "edit profile" is glitchy:August 06
            For some time now, under "edit profile" you can only put a limited amount of text in the instant messenger boxes. You cannot use Capitalized letters or some other symbols such as underscores, the @ symbol, periods, and spaces.
            If your Instant Messenger fields contain any of the above, it will not update/save.

          • New users cannot use "Old Profile Layout" August 04
            For the last few weeks, users with new accounts are unable to switch to the "old layout" type on their profiles. Some new users who switched to the Version 2.0 profiles are unable to change back to the old layout. There are no workarounds for this currently.

            New profiles are also not always displaying properly. To read the details and/or report a compatibility issue, please go HERE

          • PMs Still Giving Errors May 17
            As you may have noticed there are some errors popping up in the PM system.
            The Database Error: Unable to retrieve PM may still come up from time to time but the Gaia staff are working on getting it fixed. If you recieve this error just wait a moment and try again.

Issues That Affect Every Aspect of Gaia

Password Retrieval Workaround Jan 23
This one has actually been an issue for a while. The password retrieval does not show up when you first try to login, however, if you misguess the password once, the link shows up.
For reference, for those who want to give it out or skip that first misguess, the link is as follows:

Account Activation/Confirmation E-mails Jan 7
Many users are reporting issues with the e-mails to activate their accounts on new accounts or after changing their e-mail address or password. Suggested course of action if this happens to you is to send in a feedback form. Unfortunately, this is not something the moderators can help with.

Random login issues November 17
A very, very small number of users are reporting that while posting or browsing the site they find themselves logged in as another member. Password and Security information is unaffected. Users cannot change passwords, start trades or any of that while logged in as other member. We are aware of this glitch and it is being worked on with full speed and all the attention it requires. If it happens to you please log out of the account and continue about the site.

Random log outs October 8
There is a recent problem of users being seemingly-randomly logged out of their Gaia Online accounts. There are currently no known workarounds for this issue; simply log back in to your account.

White/Blank Pages October 7
Many users have been intermittently getting blank or white pages in various areas of the site right now. The problem is being worked on. Meanwhile, users are encouraged to simply refresh the page until it loads correctly. (F5 on a PC, or Command+R on a mac)

Log in problems Sept 11th
Some members are logging into Gaia only to recieve a temporary IP lockout. This is standard when a password is misguessed multiple times, but is happening with one or no false guesses. Users do gain access after the 15 minute ban is up and they are not being locked out of the site altogether.

The following message may or may not show up before the ban:

OMG Event with no eek bubble and no link
Many users have reported getting rare events with either no bubble by their avatar to indicate the event, or no 'if you can't find your event, click here' link at the bottom of the page, or sometimes both. If this happens to you, use the link below to collect your event:

Database Errors Mar 12
There's been site-wide issues with database errors for a couple of days now. If you get a message that says, "Error, Could not connect to <insert funky food name for database here> database," Don't worry about it. Just refresh, and the page should eventually load for you.

Ghost PM Workaround Feb 6th
Most, if not all users are experiencing a glitch where after they recieve new mail the letter symbol does not go away, making it look like they constantly have new mail waiting for them. Mail also appears bolded as if it has just arrived for an extended period of time. This issue has been going on for multiple days.
The following workaround has been reported by a user:
The issue with the Ghost PM's in the cookie by the name "Gaia2_sid". Removal of that cookie has a duel effect of:
� logging you out and you have to login again
� Ghost PM's are gone.

4. Guild/Journal Issues
Anything Affecting the Gaia Guild Network (GGN) or Gaia Journals

Journal Header Images October 7
Because the html to insert images has been disabled and the bbcode for inserting images isn't currently working in Journals, users attempting to edit Journal headers that have images in them report that the images will no longer display after editing. Likewise, it's not currently possible to insert an image into a journal header that doesn't have one.

GGN Guilds - Moderation Difficulties Sept 20
Since the re-opening of GGN guilds a couple of days ago, guild captains and crew are unable to delete or lock threads, and also unable to edit posts that they did not make themselves. These features should be coming back in the near future. Please do not PM moderators asking them to do these things for you, as they are not able to do these things in GGN guilds either right now. For the moment, please try to make do with post deletion and banning problem users from your guilds.

Journal Comments can't be viewed Sept 7
If you have comments in your journal and get an error message when attempting to view them, try clicking the link to add a new comment. This should enable you to view the existing comments.

Post Deactivated Notice July 19
"Deactivated post" error happens when you are trying to look at "deleted entries" in your journal. Don't worry, your journal has not been deactivated, just add a new entry so the error is not displayed. If after trying this nothing happens, contact an online dedicated moderator to see if your journal has been deactivated.

Unable to confirm creation of Guild
Some users report that they are not able to confirm creation of new guilds, despite having the 20k required to create one. There are no known fixes at this time.

Bank trading glitch: Error Taking Item out of Your Inventory Feb 11
This is an older issue. Apologies in the delay for reporting it. Gaian users seem to be unable to trade the last item out of their inventory into another account. When they try, the "Error Taking Item out of Your Inventory" message appears.

Workaround:While there is no way around this at current time, buying an inexpensive item and leaving it in your inventory as a placeholder will allow you to get whatever item you've trapped in your inventory out and to send it off to other users. Alternately, using the gift system to gift the final item to whichever use you plan to send it to may work as well.

Unclickable Items Jan 28
In the last week or so, many members have experienced difficulty with buying items in stores and trading items via the bank. When clicking on items in the stores or at the bank, nothing happens.

A workaround has been found, though it may only work for some users. Workaround information can be found here: Cannot Click on Store Items Please also use that thread to report new information on the issue.

Update Aug 15: This should be working fine now.
Try not to change your name for the rest of the day as Lanzer is working on fixing it. If you try to change your name while the feature is broken you may lose your gold.

Vending Pass option MIA March 22
The option to buy a Vending Pass is finnicky and can be accessed manually here if you already have a Trading Pass.

Blank name trades Sept 8
Some users have been reporting glitches where trades in their pending trades list at the bank not only show no subject line, but also blank out the name of the other user they are trading with. A workaround has been found for this, as described below. Note: This workaround works best if the blank name trade is the ONLY trade currently in your pending trades.
**If your trade shows a name of the user you are trading with, but no subject line, you can click on the name to access the trade.

For IE: In the top menu, click view / source

For Firefox you just have to press right click and "V" over any part of the page or right click with your mouse.. and select in the menu "View page source"

Then, search with "control + F" (search) this line:
bank.php?mode=trade&trade_id=
That line should appear.. but at the end it will have the ID number we are searching for.

Next:
Copy the part: "bank.php?mode=trade&trade_id=NUMBER" and add it to the URL I posted as the base. (top of this post... paste it without the "" thingys)

You'll get a link like this:
http://www.gaiaonline.com/gaia/bank.php?mode=trade&trade_id=NUMBER
Voila! Click it ^ _ ^;; that's your trade whee


Items disappearing during trades July 19
Many users have reported items vanishing from the trade window and their inventory when attempting to either start or confirm a trade at the bank. It seems to be a random ocurrance. Use the bank at your own risk.

Trading Pass Difficulties Feb 13
Some users are also reporting issues with trading passes where the bank shows them the option to buy a trading pass, yet tells them they already have one, and won?t allow them to trade saying they need a trading pass.

Lag is affecting the Bank
Sometimes when completing a transaction, it takes several minute up to an hour (sometimes longer) for it to fully complete.
There is nothing to do to speed this up. This is an intermittent issue that comes up from time to time.

8. Vending Issues
Everything that affects the Marketplace.

  • Searches Cannot be Under 3 Letters August 04
    Ever since the last major Marketplace upate, searches can no longer be less than 4 letters. The admins/developers are aware of this and urge users to be patient.


  • Marketplace Error - Buy failed.
    Some users have reported recently that when attempting to buy something in the marketplace, their gold was taken, but the bid or buy failed and did not go through. This seems to result in their gold disappearing while the item remains up for sale and the seller does not receive the gold. If you experience this, you should get the item within about 24 hours.

  • "Your Store is Full" Feb 15
    Some users are getting an error message: "There were one or more errors while processing your request Sorry, your store is already full" though their store has less than four items in it. If you experience this and have some items currently up for sale in your store, please try cancelling all current sales. If that doesn't help, or you don't have any items in your store when you receive this message, please contact a moderator and they should be able to help you with it.

  • Transaction Locks #1/Expired Items     Feb 15th
    Update Mar 7: Locks should now not last longer than about two days. If you get a lock on an item that fails to clear up within two days, please report it in the Transaction Lock Reports Thread

    The transaction locks affecting a majority of Gaians occurs when an action taken in the marketplace 'fails'. This causes the item to be locked, and does not allow any further modification to the item listing by buyers or by the seller. The item also 'expires' but remains in the marketplace. The seller cannot confirm/accept bid or do anything else with the locked item. This is a known issue and is being looked into.

  • Transaction Locks #2/Unable to sell     Feb 15th
    The second transaction lock prevents sellers from placing any item into their vend stores. These should also clear up within a couple of days. If they don't, and you have a vend account and get a transaction lock error everytime you try place something for sale, please report in this thread: Transaction Lock Reports Thread

  • More Expired Items Feb 15th
    There are also items that were placed up for 'auction' and do not automatically send to the highest bidder when the time expires, and require the seller to go in an manually 'accept' the bid. You can tell the difference between this and a transaction locked item by viewing the item history and seeing whether or not the last action on the item says, "Fail!" If it doesn't say fail, the seller might be able to manually accept the bid.

  • Gold Lag Mar 12
    A lot of users have been noticing that when trading, purchasing items through the marketplace, or from the NPC stores, their gold doesn't seem to disappear when they make the purchase. While it's good to report these things if you actually do buy something and get it for free, at the moment we highly recommend you wait at least an hour or two before jumping to the conclusion that you got something for free. Gold removal has simply been lagging and the gold count hasn't been updating as quickly as we are used to. The gold should disappear after a short while if you give it some time.

  • Mstransaction Error messages Feb 5
    To clear up confusion many people seem to have about the 'mstransaction' error messages that sometimes crop up in the marketplace: darknrgy is one of Gaia's programmers, and mstransaction is an account created to take reports on marketplace errors. So if you get that error message, just do what it says to do. Thanks!

9. Art Arena/Link List Issues
Art Arena and Linklist specific problems

LinkList Gold Disabled Jan 27

Gaining gold from posting new links in the Link List has been temporarily disabled due to an abuse by certain users through either spam or through botting.

With the abuse of the Link List comes the possible effect of damaging the Gaian economy.

Until it is fixed this will be in effect til further notice.

Art Arena Refresh
AA is sending people to the main page of the Art Arena instead of moving on after voting. There's nothing to be done to fix that, it will need to be looked in to by the admins.

Linklist - Cannot Post Reviews
Update 8/Aug/2004: The link list is functioning now (users can browse) but you cannot post a review still. (loads white screen)
There is no ETA on resolution of the linklist being down. Comments cannot be posted to the linklist at this time.

Suitcase Contents not Loading August 21st
Recently, users are reporting that their suitcase is not loading all their housing items even when they are clicking on "save changes". This seems to be resolved.

Flash Games Causing Typing Issues January 10th
Some users are noticing that when they try to type in Fishing and Casinos, their computers will not let them input more than one letter at a time. Thus, if they try to write the word "hi" they can only write one letter at a time, "h" or "i".

Users with this glitch are asked to clear their cache, close out of the game, then come back to the game. That should clear up the problem.

House Saving Jan 4
Users are unable to save changes to their houses and get this error:

A full workaround is now available here.
Users experiencing this problem may use the item ID numbers to pinpoint which item is causing the error. A list of know housing item ID's is available within the workaround thread, along with instructions for determining the ID of an item and matching it the error. Once the problematic item is identified, remove it from your suitcase and proceed to save your house.

House icon not displayed
Since the forum update, the icons at the bottom of users posts and in their profiles to link to Gaia homes do not display. To view a users home, if they have one, first view their profile and take the number at the end.

11. Password Scams!

"Omnimoderators"
Hacking
Hacking is when you go into someone elses account and take their gold or items or use their account to break site rules.

90% of hackings are not truly a hacking, but a friend using another friend's account to do things without permission.

If a friend does this to you, your friend will not be unbanned.

REAL Gaia Staff will NEVER ask for your password via ANY means, for ANY reason. No matter who someone claims to be or even SEEMS to be, NEVER give them your password.

If a moderator or administrator DID ask for your password, they should be reported! So no matter what account the PM comes from, what story it has, or what the e-mail address is, NEVER give your password to ANYONE.

If someone claims to be a moderator, you can check! Moderators' names will be listed in the appropriate color: purple, teal, or green (or orange in the case of administrators). If they don't have a colored name, they aren't staff; report them to an online moderator immediately!


Other common password scam schemes to beware of:
  • Never input your Gaia username and password when the URL that you are viewing does not start with: www.gaiaonline.com or if the warning alert that you are viewing an outside website is showing.

  • Never download 3rd party programs that claim to be 'Gaia Bots', or to earn you extra/fast gold. If they really are bots, you will banned for using them. They may also contain viruses, trojans, keyloggers, or other malicious code that will allow the scammer to obtain your password information.

  • Never give your password to someone on AIM claiming to be a moderator. They are lying. Real Gaia moderators will not ask for your password, even off-site. Remember that simply because someone says via IM that they are an administrator or moderator does not make it true. And if it were, you should report them, not give them your password.

  • Never fill out surveys that ask long lists of personal questions. Gathering personal information about other users is a TOS violation, and these surveys are also often attempting to find out the answers to your security questions so that they can access your acccount. Example

  • It IS possible to spoof e-mail addresses. There have been a couple of instances where someone spoofed an e-mail address from anihq.com or gaiaonline.com This is why, despite the list of e-mail addresses below, you need to keep in mind always the main point. Gaia staff will NEVER ask you for your password. If they do, report them the same as you would anyone else.

Global Gaia Moderators handle abuse and harassment reports, as well as oversee moderation throughout the site.
Omnimoderators handle account issues, including hacking and scamming reports. Talk to these moderators about problems you may have with your account, items, and inventories.

When in doubt, PM an online purple mod! You can find a list of online moderators at the top of each forum ("View Forum Moderators" wink .

If somebody by name dvorak@yahoo.com adds you. dont accept it. Its a virus. Tell everyone on ur bulletin because if somebody on ur list adds them, u get the virus too. Tell everyone on your list not to open anything from angell11, tewwtuler, and sassybitch. It is a hard drive killer and a very horrible virus. If you do not pass this letter to everyone on your buddy list, we will delete your account. We need to find out who is really behind this.
