Try going into the profile editor, clicking theme and then the tab that says URL. In the text box there, type none (or really anything that doesn't contain any spaces or special characters). The editor has a tendency to stick text from custom panels into that part of the code when you save which frequently has the capability to break your code. I can't tell for sure that this is the same problem your friends are having without looking at their profiles, but it is what is causing your problem at least and it is a common problem so there's a fair chance that it's their dilemma too.
