Most people like the music that plays on my profile. I know some doesn't like autoplay music period. But what songs do you think would be appropriate to play automatically on a profile?

I don't mind autoplay at all, as long as it is soothing and it fits the theme. Like if I see a cool a** Gwen Stephani profile with her nice calm song called "Cool". But other than that, there must be a pause button somewhere if I don't like Lady Gaga's manly voice singing! gonk

There is no such thing as acceptable autoplay. I will always be slightly more annoyed if someone adds it to their profile.

I only put autoplay on my profile when I feel like being a jerk.
Which is a lot lately, apparently.

And there should never, ever not be a pause button, "acceptable autoplay" or not.

I hate autoplay because most of the time I'm listening to my own music and I hate clashing sounds too so it just makes me want to rip my hair out. What is even worse is hidden players. even with pause/play buttons I still want to give the viewer a choice even if it is soothing.

When I do hear hidden media I have to use WebDev, remove the code, turn it off and voila its gone. xD

Either way I highly do not recommend it cause most of us don;t have the same music tastes even if it is soothing music. x.x;

Oh and thanks Jiti for making a discuss thread, we haven;t had one and I was a bit worried. ;]

i hate autoplay because i hate most people's music taste honestly

however, like radio, i turn on autoplay to be a jackass
its like a way for me to stuff my music choice down a visitor's throat
which i love doing with any of my opinions on anything obvsly


but, of course, people are all pompous about their music and autoplay is inevitable
but when your playlist is full of either emo f*****t screamo or death metal,
please kill yourself before you put on autoplay. PLEASE.

I'm not one of those 'I hate autoplay' people who I bet most people don't even know why and just say it to be accepted by this forum.

Why do I find it acceptable?

It's your profile, it contains information about you, maybe pictures of you, your interests and of course, your taste in music. It's all part of YOU, the individual.

Whoever visits your profile is already inviting themselves to your world, they should be accepting your interests and who you are. Heck, I don't like profiles with 'street' like designs that are all gangsta and such. I don't ask them to remove that because it stings my eyes, I actually try to appreciate the individual. Their profile isn't there to impress your immaculate taste, this would be impossible simply because of a difference in opinion. Music actually helps set or carry the mood to the profile theme design and suggesting it be disabled altogether by default or forcing them to attempt to choose some popular music noone would ever disagree with is just ridiculous. I think we're all forgetting what a profile actually is, here.

I've actually been introduced to some great musical artists thanks to people's music on profiles i've never even thought of trying. If it burns my ears? Or am already listening to music? No big deal, press the stop button.

If someone asks you to listen to a song, you'd go "Sure, let's have a try". Instead of "No, it's not my music, i'm closed minded and i'll hate it". Wouldn't you?

Either we're all self centered jerks (as you americans would call it) or all victims of peer pressure to say 'autoplay is unacceptable' to belong in this forum.

I just don't give a ******** anymore about autoplay music. i most of the time have my mp3 on to even avoid autoplay music to ruin the song I'm listening to.

I use it whenever I feel like it. The viewer shouldn't be pissed off IF he has the option to stop the media.

But I exit the profile as soon as the music comes on. I can't be bothered to
look for the pause button.

To me it doesn't really matter, considering my speakers are on mute most/all of the time (my sibling's music is played more often throughout home anyway, so there'd be no point for me to hear any music from my laptop.)

The thing that does urge me though is if it's a playlist.com playlist set on autoplay. Despite my unfinished guide, considering how slow my internet is, it lags the entire browser and how long I have to wait for the entire profile to load. P: Nice though if it's not hidden so I can pause and/or delete it easily from view with webdev temporarily.

Ive learned to accept autoplay now. I always brace myself before entering a profile. Yes it clashes with my music, but im always prepared to seek out that pause button, if there is one, that is.

Its like a youtube video. Youtube videos almost pretty much autoplay when you pull them up, so its your fault if it clashes with your music. So overall, autoplay doesnt bug me unless it has no pause button, or its a really loud song thats like, BAM, IN YOUR FACE LOL SCARED YOU.

I agree with Allariele. Its their profile, all about THEM, and should represent every aspect of them, including music.

But I guess this is where my opinion deviates into a pretentious tangent. Like Cata, I hate most peoples music tastes. And I'm very open-minded with music, but it almost feels like people on Gaia went out of their way just to find the most annoying and garbage music out there.

I happen to apply the music playing to my overall opinion of a profile. I personally think that profile music should not only reflect their taste but also fit well with the theme. I remember Gummi made a profile that had a very lush ambient song autoplaying, and it melded perfectly with the dreamy backdrop in her profile. It begins to annoy me when people make a typical profile with a theme, but their music is just their favorite song, and completely clashes with their profile. Thats where my previous comment comes in: Most people on Gaia have awful tastes, so its a double whammy when they choose a horrible song that also clashes with the profile's theme.

Back on the whole autoplay thing, I personally think when people autoplay something, theyre telling ME,the viewer that I HAVE to listen to the song because it blends with the profiles vibe. However its understandable when people post like playlists of their favorite songs that dont match the theme, so long as its not autoplay. Autoplaying, in my opinion is the viewers decision to include the music with the profile. When its not on autoplay, its just a seperate element not part of the profile itself. So theme blending is optional, but only if the music is NOT on autoplay.

And thus concludes my confusing poorly arranged and written chunk of my scattered thoughts and opinions on this 'controversial' topic. Time will tell if any of it actually makes any sense.

I read everyone's post and I agree mostly with Cali Soca and Allariele, they just bullet point really good reasons how/why autoplay can be acceptable. =D

AND WTF, how does autoplay make a person seem like a jackass? ;-; "Imma put autoplay cuz i am rude liek dat." ME: "This person likes Hanna Montanna?" Unless there's a song that involve disgusting or offensive lyrics like "If mah woman dont make me a sandwich I bitchslap her to the kitchen infront of my homies yo yo YO DAWG." <-- lol

To be honest, I used to dislike autoplay simply because most people do too. It's not only that, I hate it when I have a high volume and all of the sudden WHAMO a screamo song just popped my ears. Most profiles that I run into have songs I dislike. (There is a reason MP3's or volume controls exists)

Now I just don't mind autoplay, if I don't like it then I take the time to look for the pause button. Without autoplay I would not have found my all time favorite song "Raindrops" by Basement Jaxx, "Rock With You" by Janet Jackson or "Pretty Rave Girl" by I am Xray. ftw! :'D
A profile is an expression of who you are.

Which reminds me of the time some chick posted a topic "PLIZ RATE MY PROFILE" then you see a V2 profile with a huge playlist of her favorite songs (in autoplay), blinking images and copy and pasted images that clutter up her profile causing your computer to go super slow. After people rated her profile in the lowest score she would scream out "ITZ MAH PROFILE, I WANTED TO EXPRESS MYSELF AS AN INDIVIDUAL". It was kinda like that. Hoping you get the picture. >.>;; But profile theme is a WHOLE different story.

Back on topic, when asking for a profile rating overall autoplay is acceptable as long as there is a pause button and it is only one song that fits gorgeously to the whole theme of the profile. It makes the whole profile come to life. If the person is listening to a song on youtube or somewhere else and wanted to go out to rate profiles, turn it off and brace yourself. DO EET! >:0

I would love to see a profile that's rainforest theme with rainforest sounds or an ocean flash profile with ocean sounds with moving waves! That would be kinda cool. :]

Sorry, theres a couple of things I find wrong with this. First off the comparison of being asked to check out a song. That would be more similar to having a non autoplaying media on a profile, because basically its like "here is a media section, you want to check it out?" An autoplaying media would be more similar to someone sneaking up behind you and blasting a radio, "WHOO GUY, CHECK THIS SHIET OUT!"

Secondly, the whole personal world thing is fine and dandy, but you have to remember that this is PD, and anyone visiting a profile was invited to do so. So an extra effort of consideration should be made. So yeah, everything you said about their profile not being there to impress our "immaculate tastes" is bull. If someone asks my opinion, and its my opinion that I dont like a second song playing over what I was already playing then I'll tell them that. If they ask to be told that they're a special snowflake instead, then I'll give them all that about personal worlds.
