HALP
Helping Artists Learn Program

    Lost. Confused. Alone.

We all remember our first ventures into the Requests and Commissions forum. Crazy threads, crazy terms, crazy art. Wuddafup's a 'bribe slot'? 5k headshot, 10k knees, double for couples? What?
Here at HALP, we are dedicated to helping new artists find their place in the hectic Requests and Commissions forum. We're here to answer any question you may have with our loyal staff, tutorials, and FAQ!
The thing that we hope will set us apart from other help threads is our Apprentice program. New, confused, inexperienced artists get matched up with an established R&C artist, who will help them into the world of Gaia R&C! The Mentor will guide them through the process of setting up a shop, selling artwork, participating in auctions, and more. All Mentors and Apprentices are matched together by their own unique needs and capabilities, to provide the most helpful experience possible.

So sit back, relax, and browse the thread. Hopefully you'll find something that will prove helpful! No one will be turned away, forgotten or ignored. We will help anyone that requests it!

Welcome!

Guidelines, and Suggestions.

Follow the Site rules, Forum rules, and TOS.
Hey, we didn't make 'em, we just enforce 'em! If you don't follow Gaia's rules, you could be warned, suspended, or even banned from the site. And we don't want any of that happening in our Halp Thread! So if you haven't already familiarized yourself with them, please do. Site Rules and Guidelines, Gaiaonline Terms of Service, and Pricing, Assistance, and Suggestions Rules and Guidelines.

Don't be rude, discourteous, impolite, disrespectful, uncouth, uncivil, or crude.
If you know what you are doing is not nice and unnecessary, don't do it. Like my first grade teacher used to say: Treat others how you want to be treated. If you are nice, we will be nice back. But if you are rude, complain, or post obscene pictures, we won't be happy. You will be immediately reported, your post removed, and you will no longer be allowed to participate in the thread.

Stay away from chat speak/leet speak.
If you want help quickly and easily, it would help if people could understand what you want.
By all means you do not have to type perfectly, or know the proper uses of a semi-colon and how to spell the word pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism (because most of us don't know those things either). Full words, complete sentences, commas when needed, and periods where required will make it all easier. For everyone. 0|</y?

Try not to stretch the page when posting.
This happens when you post a very large image, or a lot of text without any spaces. Make sure to post links to images that are over 500x500. And if a line of text is going to stretch the page, its probably unnecessary, anyways.
If this happens, you will be given time to fix it. If you don't, we will ask you to please fix it. If even then nothing happens, your post will be removed and reported. Page stretching is against the forum rules.
And also, it is just plain annoying.

If you have a problem, contact one of the staff.
If you have a problem, question, or any other kind of inquiry, PM one of the staff members! Questions you would like answered quickly should NOT be PM'd to The HALPer (sometimes she runs off with Damp Dan, and we can never find them very quickly!). We are here to help with whatever you need. But, please, only PM us after looking through the FAQ and tutorial list. A lot of people have the same problems starting out, so we might have already covered what you are wondering about somewhere in the thread!

You need help? COME HERE!

An Apprentice is someone new to the Requests and Commissions forum that is looking for some help, AKA, a Mentor. You don't really need anything to be an Apprentice, besides the willingness to learn and become part of the R&C community.
When being an Apprentice, you will be taken into your chosen mentor's art shop to learn the tricks of the trade. Apprenticeships usually last, at most, around a month. During this month you will learn and practice how to price and sell your own original artwork, maintain a shop, and participate in auctions.
Then, when you and your mentor feel you're ready, they help you open your very own art shop! When you are all done, they let you go your way, richer for the experience (and, hopefully, in commission gold!).

If you only have a few questions you would like answered, but don't actually want a Mentor, DO NOT APPLY! Just post your questions in the forum, or PM one of the staff members!

    How to become an Apprentice.
It is really quite easy. Just fill out this form, then send it in a PM to The HALPer. All your information will be kept private and will not, in any case, be shared with the public. Each application takes a few days to process, tops, so be patient. When we have matched you with your Mentor you will receive the information in a PM from The HALPer.
ONLY THE HALPER CAN MATCH YOU WITH A MENTOR!

If you have any questions about the application, please PM one of our Guides, who are listed in the Staff post.
If you have any questions about being matched, the time it takes, or anything about the process, please PM one of our Head Advisers, who are listed in the Staff post.

A mentor is someone who helps a new artist, or Apprentice, learn about the ways of the R&C forum. Mentors must have had/have a relatively successful art shop, whether joint or solo, temp or established. Exceptions can be made, but it is something that is highly recommended, and very helpful to your being accepted. Other than that, anyone who has something to teach can apply. It doesn't matter if you have been here five years with an one thousand plus art shops, or if you have only been here a few months with barely one hundred pages. As long as you know how to make it in the Requests and Commissions forum, and feel you have the ability to teach someone, you are right for the job!
If you just want to help answer questions, but not actually receive an Apprentice, DO NOT apply! Just hang around the forum, and wait for questions to pop up!

There are always happy endings. <3

This is where we rant and rave about the graduates from our mentoring program. Want to know where our graduates went after attending our program? Here’s where you find out! Below are testimonials from these former apprentices about their experiences with us, along with a link to their art shops/auctions. Mentors also appear here, with their opinions on the thread over-all, and their experiences in the programs.

    Is empty so far. Dx

Frequently asked questions.

The Frequently Asked Questions asked by people like you, answered by our staff! Is your question not here? Feel free to post it in the thread or PM the staff, and someone will respond to you with the answer!

    HALP FAQ
Questions about the HALP thread and program.

    Q. It has been a while since I sent my application, but I haven't been matched yet. What happened?
    A. First of all, check to see if you got a PM from The HALPer confirming that we got your application in the first place. Sometimes things get lost in the mail. If you didn't get a PM, feel free to send us a second one, explaining about the first lost one.
If you HAVE gotten a PM from The HALPer, then it could be that we haven't gotten around to matching you. We might have so many applications that some people can't be matched, or we might not have found the perfect mentor/apprentice for you. If you have any concerns, feel free to PM any member of the staff regarding your situation. All of the staff members have access to the list of applications, and they can check to see if something went bad along the way.

    Mini Shop FAQ
Questions about the Mini Shops forum

    Q. Where should I put my shop?
    A. It really depends on what you are planning to sell. If you are drawing commissioned artwork for people, your shop should go in the Requests and Commissions forum. If you are selling a pet that grows/changes or reproduces, your shop should be in the Breedable/Changing Pets forum. Etc etc. This thread will help you decide: Where Should I Put My Mini-Shop? Guide, by Sosiqui

    Q. How do I find out how much my art is worth?
    A. Easy! You can post a thread in this forum, Pricing, Assistance, and Suggestions. Make sure to include samples of what you will be selling. An MS Paint doodle isn't always proof that you can do CG like a pro, and drawings on lined paper always get marked off, even if you say you will do commissions on white paper. Try to make samples of exactly what you will be selling before hand. It will help the people who are pricing your art and you will have some nice images to show when you open shop. ^_^

    Q. My shop has been open for a while, but I am not getting any customers! What should I do?
    A. In a situation like this, there could be many factors that are causing it. Usually, people put their prices too high. It could also be things like poor quality samples, unappealing thread layout, or lack of shop activity. A good way to get help with a problem like this is to post a thread in this forum, Pricing, Assistance, and Suggestions, asking for people's opinions.

    Your question isn't answered here?
While we are adding questions whenever we can, it is always a good idea to ask if you can't find the answer you are looking for.
Feel free to PM any of the Guides in the staff list. They will help you however you need it. ^_^
