Okay, so my friend and I are holding an art contest over heeeerrrrrreeeee.

The problem is we don't know what prizes to give or how much gold to offer. We have less than million combined, but we don't seem to have many people interested in the contest. And we're pretty much contest noobs. So veterans who have been in or held contests, please help us out.
What should we do to increase interest in our contest? And how much of a prize should there be?

Honestly, I'm sorry to say but in my opinion unless you have at least 1million to spend on your contest, you're probably not going to get the entries/results that you want. (I mean, there ARE contests with less than that, but I personally don't even look at them. In addition the more you offer and the nicer your thread looks the more credibility you have, especially the latter.)

It also depends on how much art you want and the quality you're going for. In addition there's DEFINITELY not enough time with a July 19th deadline (if you started it a few days ago) for any real entries to come in. Honestly, I suggest that you cancel the auction, tip a little to the entries you've already recieved, and move your funds to the R&C forum as a request thread for art, letting the artists know that there's a deadline and that you will publish their work. You will probably get more bang for your buck that way.

One thing that really stands out is the deadline. O: Talk about a close call! Most contests run for a long time. Unless there's a chance to win A LOT for such a short time to get an entry in, I wouldn't expect many to enter.

Also, everything is crammed into one post. So they layout of the thread is kind of a put-off.

I agree with Nahri. Best best if to create a thread in the R&C asking for artists that can work under this deadline.

That deadline is our deadline too. We know it's short, but it's what we have to work with in order to make sure it's ready by the time we want it...

We started it earlier, but it was a bit before we put it up here on Gaia. Yes, that's our fault, we were slow.

We're also not asking for full color masterpieces. Just black and white (and maybe greytone) images.

We'll try to work on the layout I guess.

Well honestly, it's black and white art. it doesn't have to be days upon days worth of work for an entry. We do not expect the best art on Gaia. We just want a little bit of art. The best of which will get the prize.

The posting layout is purely aesthetics and opinion. If you choose not to read something because you don't want to read in paragraphs, well I'm sorry. Perhaps the contest isn't meant for you.

Neither one of you touched upon specific prizes, rather you just said "It's not enough gold to attract good art/enough art entries." I'm paraphrasing, but that's the gist of what I'm getting. To me that sounds like you're saying it's a crap contest because we aren't offering at least a mil. well, that's retarded. I'm sure there are people who will draw for less.

I don't think you understand that this is a short quick contest where a semi-decent artist can pick some quick gold and possibly get published. This contest is NOT meant for those artists who charge at least 100k, etc per commission.

I know that you don't need days and days for a piece, but many artists will be turned off by the short deadline. On another note, one of your submission guidelines states "Must be high quality artwork"... that doesn't give the impression that this is something "quick".

When something is not organized in a coherent fashion, it will turn off many people who do not have the time to read the whole thing to figure out what you want. When you don't have the time to set up a thread in the best way you can, then, like I said, people are not going to take you seriously. You're right, this contest isn't for me, but unfortunately, there are many people who are like me and that makes this contest "not for them" either. I think you would want to make your contest "for" as many people as possible.

You didn't ask for specific prizes to be mentioned. You asked, "And how much of a prize should there be?" And I gave you an amount. Of course people will draw for less. People draw for free in the Art Freebies forum. But you're not paying every entrant 100k, you're paying ONE entrant 100k. So people get to work on a drawing for you, right away otherwise they won't meet the deadline, for a CHANCE to win 100k. That's why I suggested going to the R&C, where artists will feel better about GUARANTEED payment, even though you will probably be paying them less.

I do understand that you're trying to hold a short quick contest, but the reason you're doing it is to generate some art in a very limited amount of time, right? You can still get that from a request thread. In addition another reason that helps with having a longer time-frame is that you get way more publicity. There's a lot more activity in the R&C than in the Art Contests. The semi-decent artist trying to make some quick gold is going to head to the R&C, not the Art Contests forum where MOST contests take months and have a lot of prizes.

Next time somebody takes the time to offer their advice you might thank them for it even if you disagree.

Your answer concerning the prize amount was... I don't want to say vague, but it doesn't give us much direction. We have a bit over half a mil between the two of us, but we don't know if should just give gold or if there are any specific items that would be good to offer. We can always buy something from the cash shop too, but I really don't know much about what people are interested in for prizes.

As for the layout of our thread... really, we don't have a lot of info. If we break it up, it's just going to look all sparse and require a lot of scrolling. I know people LOVE making fancy threads with this and that in separate posts, but it's kinda pointless if you're only going to have like... a few bits per post. There's no point in that.

As for art quality, maybe that could be better explained. We're not looking for masterpieces, but we don't want a bunch of scribbles.

I edited the thread. It looks a bit nicer now. I know it's not perfect... we just don't have the time for that with trying to finish everything up, but we'll do what we can and then be better prepared for any future things like this.
