Echelon intercepts all forms of wireless communication, and probably most wired too for screening for suspicious keywords.

So yes they are watching you.

Remember how Obama promised a more transparent government? I seriously think he needs to look the definition of transparent up again.

TRANSPARENT =/= ******** OPAQUE
It's totally transparent. At least, it's transparent when cos(x) = You have the power to pull this kind of thing.
Otherwise, you're just not picking up the wavelength.

Although, I must say, this doesn't actually seem that surprising as a counterterrorism measure. A horrible one, sure (and with way too long a timeframe) but something I would've expected was already enacted in the US.

Allahu ackbar, dubstep is the bomb! Can we pretend that airplanes fall from the night sky like giant fireballs. Julian Assange made yellow cake for my second Nigerian son. The Imam has a training camp in a cave where men are taught to care for rabbits and ride ponies.

(If I got your attention, operator ### at alphabet agency XXX, go back to masturbating)
it's being challenged, no need to worry
now, if it is kicked out of court for some reason, then we might have a 9th and 10th issue on our hand
biggrin

Whats so horrible? I thought this was all information the government has on record anyway.

They do, and they probably have capability to store it, even if illegally. The problem is the precedent of giving bodies legal rightshood to store and compile information on people under the perview of suspicion.
It's uncomfortable a precdent to say the least.

But where's the harm?
Look on the bright side, everyone. They simply don't have the staffing to analyze all of the stuff. As long as your stuff doesn't include significant keywords in more than uncommon frequency.

I'd bank on wired before wireless. Considering, particularly, that telephone, internet and now (often) television all go through central hubs which can easily be tapped.

True, but they'd need to be hard-line connected into those central hubs which presents more obvious legal problems. I think that they can just intercept wireless transmissions, which you can pretend doesn't happen.

Just randomly Anon decides to troll the government by transmitting millions of messages containing keywords and essentially shuts down echelon for a day.

Not necessarily. The algorithms they use are pretty good at filtering the obvious crap out.

Well actually, around 2001, there was this legislation (sec 216) that authorized the use of a "trap and trace" device, like the so-called "Carnivore," at an ISP to monitor traffic. S'posedly been used very rarely, but in theory, opens up the whole field of communication through that ISP.

As far as pretending it doesn't happen, well, they do that a lot. The usual plan is to own up to it decades after nobody cares anymore, and then sometimes reclassify it just in case somebody actually does.

Is the right to privacy protected in the constitution or somesuch?

Just wondering if there is any actual legal protection, beyond the grace of politicians, for your personal information.

Sort of, and it depends on what terms the privacy is framed to trigger more explicit or more subtle Constitutional protection.

EDIT: SHE'S TOO FAST FOR ME

isn't it more if it is a government actor or not? Or am I missing some case law protecting various things from the private corps.?
