Welcome to Gaia! ::

A president is the head of the executive branch of government. The branch of government that is supposed to serve as a check on the legislative branch (Congress, in the U.S.'s case.). They cannot make bills or acts, they cannot put their own ideas on the table, that is reserved for those in the legislative branch. The executive branch is only there to say "yes" or "no" to what the legislators think. So why is there so much worship for the president in the United States?

When Canada, the U.K., Australia, France, or pretty much any other first-world democracy has to send someone over to another country for a major diplomatic mission, we usually send the Prime Minister, the head of the legislative branch. Prime ministers are the ones that serve as the symbol of our country. But the U.S. sends their President. Why? We don't send the Queen when we have a diplomatic mission, why does this rule apply to the Americans?

When children grow up in the U.S., they are told that if they work very hard in school, they may "someday be President". When children grow up in nearly every other first-world democracy, they are told that they may "someday be Prime Minister".

Why is "President" a more sought-after title than "Head of Congress"?
because the President knows if aliens are real or not. He also carries around a nuclear missle gun. I mean common
The President of the United States is the Head of State and the Commander-in-Chief. The President has control over foreign policy decisions and the military. Congress has checks on both of these activities as the senate has to ratify treaties and Congress has to agree to declare war. But on the whole the President has autonomous control of the actions of those two departments.

And since you don't think the president isn't important enough who would you send instead? There is no unified leader of both houses of Congress. would you prefer the president of the Senate (the Vice President) or the Speaker of the House? Those two happen to also be the first and second in line to succeed the president should he die in office.
all presidents begin as puppets, but if they begin to believe in their own horseshit, they can start acting like despots until they get impeached or assassinated. In the United States, there's historical evidence of both happening, so the President is a peculiar position. And like someone else said, they know whether or not Aliens are real or military projects. They know what's really going on and have access to the big red button of doom. Anyone who admires raw power has a great deal to admire in the president.

The Governor General has access to the *little* red button here, but most of this country doesn't even know who our GG is. In fact, I can't even remember his name. He's some university professor from some place in the East....David something?

Maybe we don't admire the person with the raw power as much as the guy who gets the most TV air time and whom the most scandals and backlash surround. Or maybe we would admire the GG more if we had a bigger red button.

As mentioned, our president is the one who symbolizes us, or is supposed to, and has many different positions. Also, you seem to be holding up other democracies to compare to ours, when our government is a different system. The president in most republics are powerless, with the prime ministers holding all the power. We have no prime minister, only a president, nor do we have a unified leader of our legislative branch. We would certainly not send Speaker Boehner or the V.P to do such diplomatic work

The President serves as a Legislative check, but he is also the face of the country as well as Commander in Chief.
For diplomatic missions, most times the Vice President is sent or of course the Secretary of State.
The reason why children are taught to aspire to be President is because there is only one President at a time. There can be many Supreme Court Justices as well as Congressman. But the President, on his/her own serves as a check and balance compared to two groups that are made of many.
Everyone in the US (hopefully) knows who the President is because everyone participates in electing them, whereas no one elects Supreme Court Justices because they are Appointed by the President and Approved by the Senate.
So while the Congress does the bulk of work and action in the US, they are many who filibuster and persuade each other to pass or shoot down bills. The Supreme Court only so often gets a case that takes national attention. But the President is constantly onscreen in American media because he acts as another majority or minority leader for Congress based on which party he/she is and which party is in control in the House and Senate.
So while there are checks and balances, the President has slowly become a larger role, beyond veto powers and Justice appointment, over the years that the US has been an established country.

Last time I checked no US president had a personality cult. (Possible exception being FDR)

We might adore our presidents but we don't worship them.

Why is "President" a more sought-after title than "Head of Congress"?
Well, the Vice President only casts votes when the Senate is tied, and the Speaker of the House is an a*****e.

It's symbolic of the fact that we're actually run by the intelligence community/military-industrial complex. Our Commander in Chief, leader of our military, represents us because our legislative processes are vestigial and no longer do their jobs.

.......

Because the American government functions wildly differently than British government, with different powers and responsibilities granted to different offices.

As it stands, the President is the one, single person with the greatest amount of power and the greatest ability to make decisions. I'm not saying it is absolute, just that pound for pound, the President has more power than any other one person in our government. That's the whole point of the office.

One of the big things is the commander in chief deal. Britain's Prime Minister is your commander in chief, authorized to declare war and capable of authorizing the use of nuclear weapons.

Similar offices structured differently.
Eh? Have you forgotten about Machiavelli's Discourses on Livy?

The President represents the King
The Senate/Congress represents The Senate
and local governments, provincial ones, and all other little things of that nature essentially represent the tribunes.

It's no wonder the President in most Republican forms of government feel like their a King because they're essentially the replacement King.

I don't worship my president. Quite the opposite in fact.
Doesn't the Executive branch also run the Bureaucracy? The president appoints and is senior to the heads of numerous government departments that run the entire show that is the US government. Right?
