Those anti-terrorism laws that criminalize certain kinds of information are right up there.

Though for my money, it's th' nativist groups, like the BNP and the EDL. Especially the ones tied up with hooliganism.

Racist political groups are becoming increasing isolated. They're like a cornered Badger, their voices are becoming louder and their actions more violent but they aren't any real threat.
I would agree with this. A lot of people outside the UK dont seem to get how insignificant these groups actually are.
Seems to me that if they were really insignificant, I wouldn't know about them. Because one thing I really don't give a s**t about in any sense is English social institutions.

You do have to admit that's kind of a flawed metric. The BNP isn't wholly insignificant, that's true, but not everyone knows who they are, whereas everyone knows who the Westboro Baptist Church is and they genuinely are.

Well, Westboro Baptist is numerically insignificant. I don't think that's what's being argued here; the insignificance being spoken of is more like unimportant, lacking in influence, which I don't think could be said of any of these groups.

Lacking in outright political power, certainly. Not explicitly a part of mainstream dialogue, sure. But present on a national and international stage, all the same - and exerting an influence of sorts on the sort of impressionable people such groups normally have an impression on.

Our Tea Party is a close parallel to the EDL, I would say. And I would not call them insignificant for the world, as much as I'd dearly love to do so for the rest of my life. If it were true.

The media trains a spotlight on them.

Uhm, yes? Dime-a-dozen pop musicians with no actual talent aren't insignificant social forces, either.

If we judge their significance by their political power then they're bordering on impotent, which I would equate with insignificant.

No its not. This is precisley the kind of misapprehension I'm talking about. Your Tea Party is a significant influence upon the GOP. As the GOP is one of the giants of your two party system this clearly amplifies the Tea Parties significance in US politics.

The EDL and BNP do not have an influence on any of the three partys at Westminster. Getting the "EDL vote" will not help you become leader of the Conservative Party.
