The problem with that, and with him saying it was a "mistake" is that...

...well... yes, it was a mistake.

It was a mistake to give a false impression, or a mistake to reveal his intentions.

People with secret plans who accidentally reveal them are going to do whatever they can to make it seem as if they had no secret plans at all.
