Welcome to Gaia! ::

Washington's SB 5688, or the "everything-but-marriage" law (which would create domestic partnerships that are the closest thing to gay marriage yet), is likely to pass the referendum voted on Tuesday.

Currently there's still 600,000 ballots left to count, but half of those are from the state's liberal stronghold of King County (it's always the deciding factor in what the state does in terms of elections these days), and Referendum 71 is passing by a 2-to-1 margin here.

As the Zen Master says, "I'll keep you updated."

UPDATE:

69% of the votes have been tallied, with 52% approving, 48% rejecting (those are rounded numbers btw)

This'll be close, and it won't be official until all the votes have been accounted for.

UPDATE: R-71 passed 51.03% to 48.97%.

The Zen Master says, "That's all folks."

If this does well and passes, and Washington doesn't fall off the map or instantly burst into flames, I think it will be a huge step toward homosexual marriage. The voters are the ones that are moving this through, and that is what is going to be needed.
I'm fine with anything but barrage.

Not to sound like a jerk, but take what is there at the moment. You don't eat an elephant in one sitting. You're not getting this fixed in one vote, either, but it is a step in the right direction.
I doubt this'll help many forget Maine spitting in their face, but it's a step.
I Can't Believe It's Not Marriage!

Pretty much as good as the real thing.

I was trying to be funny, but, thats true, I wish gay people realized that, instead of whipping themselves in failure after they lose a vote.
I know people are excited about a potential step forward in the gay marriage debate.... but doesn't this seem a lot like "separate but equal" to anyone else?

It's a means, not an end unfortunately. Baby steps.

Ahh I see

Well, I suppose it is a good way to clear up a lot of those misconceptions... I mean, if gay partnership is accepted and society remains intact, then there's nobody who can really argue against allowing them to marry... not that they'll stop trying.

Eh, a little bit. It's also possibly a step toward full blown civil unions all around so...yeah.

Yeah wouldn't this set a presentiment and like be the snow ball effect?

I know that we want actual marriage rights and this isn't exactly the same...but for now yeah take what you guys can get and we'll keep pushing and fighting for the actual freedoms and rights.
