Personally, I don't think this should have been on the ballot in the first place. The law was passed in the local legislature, and only showed up as a referendum because of this Protect Marriage Washington PAC. Glad it appears to be passing, though.

I'm the opposite actually. I prefer that this referendum was on the ballot, because it signals that the people in Washington are willing to accept something similar to gay marriage.

Unless they vote it down.

If my home state votes it down, then they vote it down. Simple as that.
The thing about this is that R-71=/= Prop 8. The chuckleheads in Olympia could bring up another version of this law, or better yet (for the gay marriage crowd), introduce gay marriage legislation altogether.

Maine's state governor actually said they'd see about doing just that since gay marriage failed on the ballot.

Trust me, it won't. I was already planning to move to Maine and all, and this just broke my heart severely. But meh, I can still go to Vermont. 3nodding

But I'll just go ahead and blame it on Obama, he could take the time to visit New Jersey like 3 (?) times and couldn't even show up in Maine once to show his opposition to the measure. scream

Edit: Ballotpedia claims it passed 51-49. Which is by far much closer than I expected.

I was trying to be funny, but, thats true, I wish gay people realized that, instead of whipping themselves in failure after they lose a vote.

Churches should never be forced to marry anyone. What should happen is ONLY the government issues and recognizes marriage licenses/certificates and then the people can have a ceremony wherever and however they like. The totally removes the religious aspect of domestic partnership.

On an interesting sidetrack, a man is trying to file a petition to ban all divorces in California in a move to help protect the sanctity of marriage.
