Washington's SB 5688, or the "everything-but-marriage" law (which would create domestic partnerships that are the closest thing to gay marriage yet), is likely to pass the referendum voted on Tuesday.
Currently there's still 600,000 ballots left to count, but half of those are from the state's liberal stronghold of King County (it's always the deciding factor in what the state does in terms of elections these days), and Referendum 71 is passing by a 2-to-1 margin here. As the Zen Master says, "I'll keep you updated." UPDATE: 69% of the votes have been tallied, with 52% approving, 48% rejecting (those are rounded numbers btw) This'll be close, and it won't be official until all the votes have been accounted for. UPDATE: R-71 passed 51.03% to 48.97%. The Zen Master says, "That's all folks." |
