Real people use pikes. Nothing says I mean business then impaling someone on a pike.

A Republican lawmaker from North Carolina is seeking a return to the days of public hangings, according to WRAL-TV.

Rep. Larry Pittman delivered an email this week to every member of the state’s General Assembly, describing that hangings needed to be reinstated as a “deterrent to crime,” including those who provide abortions.

“We need to make the death penalty a real deterrent again by actually carrying it out,” Pittman wrote. “Every appeal that can be made should have to be made at one time, not in a serial manner. If murderers (and I would include abortionists, rapists, and kidnappers, as well) are actually executed, it will at least have the deterrent effect upon them. For my money, we should go back to public hangings, which would be more of a deterrent to others, as well.”

Pitmman, whose radical position was driven by an inmate bragging about life in prison and delaying his execution date, said he intended the email to be sent to just one colleague instead of the entire chamber.

The last legal public hanging in America occurred in 1936 in Owensboro, Kentucky.

I love it when news reads like a troll thread from ED.

Ever notice how during election seasons stupid takes steroids? Wow. While I have absolutely no issue with executing rapists, child molesters and a lot of murderers, hanging them up like unemployed Pinata's just doesn't appeal to me.

oh sure we can murder human beings so long as we're classy about it and keep it behind the curtains.

'Murder' is to kill an innocent. You're confusing your terms.
Email really seems to kick old people in the a**. A lot.

'Murder' is to kill an innocent. You're confusing your terms.
Innocence isn't actually a necessary precondition. An unlawful killing's a murder even if you're killin' a murderer.

But of course, an execution is lawful already.

Yup. Better explanation. Thanks Wendigo.

This is already a debated thing, but just because something is law does not make it just. By calling execution murder, I am telling you, in no uncertain terms, that I perceive the death penalty as unjust.

Which is fine. That is your opinion. There are those of us that view abortion as murder as well. It carries the same amount of weight.

Except not, since only one of those ends in the life of a separate entity, which has its own personality and thought. Quit it with the false equivalencies.

With the exception of abortionists, I can't say I'd be particularly upset if his idea was put into practice.

Unjust and lawful is certainly a valid combination of terms. Or, in some cases, just and unlawful; I don't personally frown on revenge in all cases, although the law does.

So there's that.

When it comes to ascribing value to any given human life, I personally tend to ask whose life first and foremost. For example, Scott Peterson is low on that list.
