So in my socials class at school, our teacher is talking to us about current events - and one of the hottest current events is, of course, Iran and its nuclear program.

I wasn't really aware of what was happening in the Middle East before the school year began, and I only knew that Iran had had a pretty suspicious 'election' earlier this year. However, now that it's been brought to my attention, I'm shocked and have been following it for a couple weeks now. I'm not totally caught up, but I think (hope) that I've gotten the gist of things.

In light of the offer Iran has given - that they hand over little shipments of uranium to Russia/France at a time - do you think any action should be taken by the UN? If so, what action should be taken?

(Please, if my information is wrong or outdated, correct me)

I think you guys should be reading up on the CIA's involvement in the middle east since what is happening now is a direct consequence of it, I posted a huge a** list in a thread but some of the highlights are:

Quote:
1953

Iran – CIA overthrows the democratically elected Mohammed Mossadegh in a military coup, after he threatened to nationalize British oil. The CIA replaces him with a dictator, the Shah of Iran, whose secret police, SAVAK, is as brutal as the Gestapo.

Quote:
1979

Iran — The CIA fails to predict the fall of the Shah of Iran, a longtime CIA puppet, and the rise of Muslim fundamentalists who are furious at the CIA’s backing of SAVAK, the Shah’s bloodthirsty secret police. In revenge, the Muslims take 52 Americans hostage in the U.S. embassy in Tehran.

Afghanistan — The Soviets invade Afghanistan. The CIA immediately begins supplying arms to any faction willing to fight the occupying Soviets. Such indiscriminate arming means that when the Soviets leave Afghanistan, civil war will erupt. Also, fanatical Muslim extremists now possess state-of-the-art weaponry. One of these is Sheik Abdel Rahman, who will become involved in the World Trade Center bombing in New York.

Quote:
1981

Iran/Contra Begins — The CIA begins selling arms to Iran at high prices, using the profits to arm the Contras fighting the Sandinista government in Nicaragua. President Reagan vows that the Sandinistas will be "pressured" until "they say ‘uncle.’" The CIA’s Freedom Fighter’s Manual disbursed to the Contras includes instruction on economic sabotage, propaganda, extortion, bribery, blackmail, interrogation, torture, murder and political assassination.

Quote:
1986

Eugene Hasenfus — Nicaragua shoots down a C-123 transport plane carrying military supplies to the Contras. The lone survivor, Eugene Hasenfus, turns out to be a CIA employee, as are the two dead pilots. The airplane belongs to Southern Air Transport, a CIA front. The incident makes a mockery of President Reagan’s claims that the CIA is not illegally arming the Contras.

Iran/Contra Scandal — Although the details have long been known, the Iran/Contra scandal finally captures the media’s attention in 1986. Congress holds hearings, and several key figures (like Oliver North) lie under oath to protect the intelligence community. CIA Director William Casey dies of brain cancer before Congress can question him. All reforms enacted by Congress after the scandal are purely cosmetic.

iran should not be allowed to have a nuclear anything until they become more friendly

i mean, their government is pretty ******** up, they should be shunned by the world and driven back into the dark ages until they shape up. they want to hang gay folks and treat women like its the 1500's, they dont need nuclear power

I bet removing their democraticly elected leader and putting a dictator in his place had nothing to do with why their civil rights didn't shape up properly since then.

so, to get them to advance their culture from the 1500s to the 2000s we will decrease their technology from the 2000s to the 1500s
great plan

they have every right to have nukes, and i dont think that we should interfere

Yes, I am, now tell me how propping up a dictator with a fearful police force killing or torturing all dissidents wouldn't have an effect on civil rights movement of that country. I'm sure Martin Luther King could've done a lot of his work done if he had been sent to one of those prisons.

they should be allowed to have a nuclear program so long as its made abundantly clear to them that if they try to use nuclear weapons then Iran as a country will cease to exist.

why are they not allowed to have nukes?

I'm not sure how best to deal with Iran. I don't think that their government has ever even considered the option of slowing down their nuclear program, and I think that if they do create a nuclear weapon they might very well use it, and I don't think I'd want any well-deserved blame for those deaths because of inaction and foot-dragging.

That is not to say that I promote a military response, at least not until the final hour. I think the protests earlier this year, if nothing else, should've driven home to the hawks that there are thinking, breathing people in these nations that they seem ready to topple at a whim. They're not some avidly deluded populace, and they're not exactly weak either. They've found their voice again, so let's see if they can find their hands too, and put them to some use.

if they didn't overthrow the government for those elections, what will it take to do it?

I know this may sound evil, but they have missiles, they have nuclear power plants but do we have evidence that they have nuclear missiles. Or are we going the whole 2+2=4 thought?
