Who's rules? I don't know the constitution like the back of my hand, but I do know you can't invade the public sphere with religion in most instances. The gov has the authority to dictate a church's moral standards when it negatively affects citizens of the nation. The federal government's responsibility is to it's people, first and foremost.

I don't think it's your explanation but rather trying to do so with someone whose head is like concrete. All mixed up, set in its ways, and hard as a rock, although admittedly less porous so nothing new can seep in.

And anyway, that's not what Jay's advocating. Changing the legal definition of marriage need not have any effect on the religious. Just in the same way that Bill Clinton becoming President didn't really change the situation for anyone else named Bill. Churches wouldn't be forced to do anything they didn't want to.

She'd be under no obligation to defend the school. The school is misinterpreting its responsibilities, so it is very simply in the wrong.

The story itself is pretty old now, but it's a fairly good example of the way in which acts made by wayward and/or theologically sub-par organisations are sometimes used to discredit the RCC in a way which doesn't really square with the facts of the situation.
