Welcome to Gaia! ::

Hey everyone.
I recently started a relief printmaking class, and as an intro I am to do both a woodcut and a linocut of a portrait and influence (respectively). These are works in progress, but I thought of posting them for their own unique look. Sometimes the block itself is a work of great skill and patience.
Btw, woodcut ftw. Sorry, lino I'm just not feeling ya yet.

^ The linocut; it's 5"x7" . Ready for proofing this upcoming school week.

^ The woodcut; 8"x10" and a joy to carve. Gotta work on the other hand and the facial details hopefully by the next few days. Due dates 2-22; gotta hurry!

Like I said, proofs and print will be added once I get there. But enjoy for now!
much better than i could ever do
That wood cut looks great. I hope you post the prints for it, as I'm sure they'll look cool. I'm not sure about the linoleum cut, though. Maybe you should have covered the surface with sharpie so you'd know how it would look. With the ink pen scribbles, it's kind of confusing to see what's going to print and what isn't. From the way the photo looks, it appears that there's going to be a lot going on, and like some of the outlines aren't going to be very clear. And as for the background of the linoleum block, are the lines going to print at all? I can't tell how deep they are. If so, I feel like the direction of the cuts could have been planned a bit better. The block itself looks very interesting and neat, I'm only speaking out of concern for the prints (since that's what printmaking teachers look at). Good luck with the assignment, overall! I hope you like the class.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. smile
For the linocut, I transferred my original drawing and mostly just outlined with sharpie and scribbled sections that would not be cut. So it does look a bit messy, but the print luckily wont convey the scribbles and such. After every so often I would cover the block with a charcoal stick to see any stray cuts; and the open section you speak looks to be clean.
But yes! Can't wait to start printing.
