Welcome to Gaia! ::

So my puppy was sick with Parvo, and we took her to the vet. A week later, she comes home with antibiotics. I'm giving them to her 2 times a day, every 12 hours. I just let her outside, and she hasn't touched her food or water anymore. She just threw up foam, and isn't feeling well again. We spent $300 on her vet bills, and I don't know what to do. Does anyone know if I can call a vet to get some IV equipment? My mom is a nurse, and knows how to set one up.

all you can do is call and ask.

Parvo is a very nasty illness, so really all you can do is try. And keep in mind how long parvo virus lives, if you plan down the road to get another animal.

I'm so worried.. She is my baby. I'll probably call and ask soon. I just saw her eat and drink a little, but she just isn't herself.

I know that the viris is said to live around places for up to a year. We cleaned everything except the back yard with bleach the night before she came home.

She is coughing too.. I didn't think that was parvo, but the eating and drinking less, and the foaming vomit is.

I think it is longer than that. *googles* parvo can live up to 7 to 10 years in the soil.

Could try a force feeding, blending up her kibble with some baby food and water till it is drink able

I think if we do get a new puppy, she/he is gonna get shots before she/he comes home. I may try that too. neutral I just am so worried.

it is always the best option to have them have their shots. Also, if you have any future puppy play dates at your place you need to let people know, so you don't risk their animals.

But yeah like us when we get sick we don't want to eat we just kind of want to go blah.... (I know when my cat gets sick she just curls up and hides for the next 20 hours unless I pull her out and force her to have some water (aka putting it on her nose with my finger <.< ) so a little "soup" would be good just I think you can just dripple some on her tounge and she might drink some of it.
Mistress of rain is right.

Just make sure the puppy does not get dehydrated.

Awe. I don't think my kitty has gotten physically sick. Mentally? That is every night. I will be making sure she eats something, unless I see she has a fever. If I can't get a hold of the vet to get some IV bags, then I'll try to get her to take some fluids like you said.

she hasn't touched her food or water anymore. She just threw up foam, and isn't feeling well again.

The foamy substance is stomach acid and is what's being thrown up because her stomach is empty (happens to my dogs when they don't feel well and haven't eaten/drank anything). Getting some food into her may help her get past the pukeyness, because it's an excess of stomach acid that otherwise has nowhere to go, so when it builds to a certain point and has to be gotten out of the stomach, puke is the only way to go.
Plain yogurt and canned pumpkin (pure, not pie filling) work well for settling stomachs, so perhaps try and get her to eat some of one of those (I've never personally tried the yogurt with my dogs, but them and the cat all like the pumpkin)

She ate some a little bit ago. I will be going to the store tonight to get some pumpkin though. I didn't know that about the foam though. That is very interesting. Poor Hope. Thank you so much for the help. She is resting right now.

Tipsy Sex Symbol

I had a puppy with parvo.
The vet gave us three options.
For $50 I could get him one shot.
For $150 I could get a home IV set.
And for $300 a week, he could stay at the vets.

With a min wage job that doesn't even make $300 a week, I went with the middle option. I do not mean to get you down but, it didn't work for me. It was years ago and I don't think I realized how serious the sickness is. I know the worse he got, the less he moved. His heartbeat also would speed up and such. I'm not sure what it was from but I figured I'd let you know what I experienced so hopefully you can prevent it.
I really wish you the very very best. I hope everything works out! I'm sorry I cant help more.
As someone who has worked at two animal shelters, a vet clinic, and used to have a vet tech as a roommate I'm going to give you a hard truth.

A dog with parvo very rarely gets over it. Personally, I'd have euthanized the dog to save it suffering. In the end, unless you want to go into debt over this, you're dog probably isn't going to make it. Especially if it's very young.

Sorry.

Beloved Dabbler

my dad sat up day and night with our red retriever when he had puppy parvo and he lived until 15 years old.

keep your puppy hydrated, try soft food to keep the weight on and be willing to stay up with them just in case. It's not easy. I've lost a lab to it. keep fighting because they deserve a chance instead of just being given up on.

Positivity is key!

Thank you for your story. I am starting to think maybe she was tired.. I just put her back outside, and she was thrashing all around, playing, jumping and being herself again. I'm still worried..
