Welcome to Gaia! ::

I am thinking of training my one rottweiler to pull a cart.
She's still pretty young ( 5 years )

Does anyone have a dog who pulls?

I'm interested to see if anyone has any helpful links/advice. I want to teach Elsie to pull a bike eventually.
My friend is actually in the process of training her berner mix to pull a cart. Off the top of my head I can't remember the name of the book she's using as a guide but I'll find out and post. It talks about all Herve foundation work etc...

Let me know.
Though I don't know if I will be able to afford to buy a proper harness for a while.

Hiiii! I haven't in a while but my dog used to pull her wagon quite happily.

What sort of harness are you looking into? I just used an x-back style..User Image

Getting started I'd just put the harness on her for a bit, I used positive reinforcement. Loads of positive reinforcement. Once she was used too wearing the harness around I hooked her up to a fence (you want something sturdy) and walked a few feet away and frantically called to her. When she'd put weight against the harness she got loads of praise and treats.
I let her put weight against the harness several times a day until she had a 'pull' command. Then we moved on to rigging her up to the empty wagon. We also had it tied out far behind her because the sound of the wheels made her nervous.

After a while of pulling the wagon with ease and no misteps we began to add weight in 5lb increments. We got her up to 20 pounds before I moved. Since moving we really haven't worked with her harness and wagon. :< She loved it.

Theres a girl in the Pets and Animals Guild named GabbyAnimalLover I think.. Her dog is named Cowboy and she really helped me out and gave me loads of advice in the begining. biggrin

Not sure yet on the harness. She is a big girl.

I will have to wait to I start working again to buy the cart and harness.
This is the book my friend is using as her guide...
