The Ultimate Guild Update Petiton

Welcome.
I say that this is the ultimate guild updating petition because I have combed through as many other retired petitions that I could possibly find here on Gaia in hopes of bringing back those ideas along with incorporating my own.
I have been on Gaia since 2004 with many different accounts.
I have owned, co-owned, and worked as crew in many different guilds here on Gaia.
Guilds are very special to me and I hate seeing how neglected they have become by Gaia's staff.
Guilds are still a huge part of this site and hopefully by gathering lots of signatures and raising awareness we can get an update or two.

As of right now Gaia has no plans on doing any kind of update for guilds.
The only thing they are doing is fixing the known glitches, so the promised updates from the past are not happening.
So we need to show them that guilds are still important to this site!
Hopefully by petitioning and raising awareness we an get an update in time!

Ideas For Updates

#1. Give us the ability to give tips to other members in guilds.
We give tips in forums, it doesn't make sense that we aren't able to do this in our guilds. Due to the current state of the economy it would be nice if we could increase the tipping amount.

#2. Give us the option to delete/move multiple threads at a time in guilds.
This would make it a whole lot easier and less time consuming to maintain our guilds.

#3. Give us the option to delete unwanted sub-forums in guilds.
Again, this would be so convenient. Sometimes sub-forums don't go as planned then they are there forever, it becomes a hassle and eyesore. Let us get rid of useless sub-forums!

#4. Give us a marketplace or a forum dedicated to selling our guilds.
Making "for sale ads" in the Gaia Guild Network is annoying. Our threads usually end up being buried by other Guild joining ads.

#5. Increase the gold cost of buying a guild, buying sub-forums, and sending out announcements. Guilds has the potential of being a great gold sink if you would allow it.

#6. Create a join request history. When we invite someone to a guild and they reject the invite please make it to where we can not invite that person again, however let them join later on their own terms if they want. Sometimes accidents happen and people get a repeat invite, this is an annoying mistake and sometimes us guild owners get hate mail from making this mistake. Lets just n** it in the bud...

#7. Alert guild members when a sub-forum gets a new reply, sometimes sub-forums do not get a lot of attention, alerting members when a sub-forums gets a new post could help fix this problem. Maybe you could put a different color note next to the sub-forums name instead of a white note whenever someone posts in it.

#8. Provide a way to ban multiple people at once in the guilds. This will make it easier to get rid of inactive people.

#9. Give us a sub-forum in the Gaia Guild Network for the purpose of finding new affiliations. This will make it easier to find new affiliations. Looking through the network everything is all cluttered. There are recruiting threads and for sale ads everywhere.

#10. Allow us to disable donating to the guild. A lot of guilds have their donations sent to a mule so that they can hold in guild contests and events for members. Sometimes a guild doesn't need anymore funds they have all the forums that they need and have enough saved up for announcements.

#11. Give us the option to view our post history in guilds. We have the ability to view what we post in forums, we should have the option to see what we have posted in guilds as well.

#12. Allow us to subscribe to guild threads. We can do it in forums, but we cant do it in guilds and that doesn't make any sense. It would make things so much more convenient, I know that the role playing guilds would love it.

#13. Add a report post function in guilds. Lets face it, sometimes people treat guilds as a free-for-all. It's rare but it does happen, being able to directly report a post to a crew member would be a nice touch, and it would make moderating guilds easier on all involved.

#14. Allow us to customize the forum backgrounds in our guilds.

#15. Give us a warning system! The idea is simple, to be able to more easily enforce guild rules, by adding a button to posts that would allow crew members to give a warning for breaking a rule, a warning that anyone on the crew or higher could view as a reference, or the captain could review and even remove if needed. To make it easier to keep track of who broke want rules, and so that crew members can detect faster if a person has been warned multiple times.

#16. Temporary bans, add a feature that allows crew members to control how long a person is banned for.

#17. Update Guild Search, a lot of times when i put key words into the guild search I end up with a bunch of guilds that aren't even related to the key words that I put in. Gaia please fix this, it's annoying.

#18. Give us the option to hide sub-forums from regular members view. A lot of guilds have forums meant for the crew eyes only, it would be nice to be able to completely hide this from the regular members view.

#19. Allow captains to withdraw gold out of the guilds savings. Lets face it when you give up gold you lose it, it shouldn't matter what the captain does with it. Allowing this would make it a lot easier to buy items for guild ran contests and events.

#20. We all have houses in towns, give us an option to spend gold on buying a huge building in towns for our guilds. This way guild members can meet up and hang out in designated guild buildings. It could probably become a good gold sink too.

#21. Give us a Guild Battle System. Let us battle other guilds for fun. It would probably draw even more people to joining guilds.

#22. Allow us to send out multiple guild announcements in a day. Things can change with contests and such during the day and the crew and vice captains could add on to things or whatever. Allowing this would be more convenient.

#23. Allow full access to guilds on the mobile platform. Instead of just seeing updates and notices for threads in the app and just moving over to the phone browsers.

#24. Give us the option to use Gaia Cash in guilds by letting us buy a guild with it, buying or removing sub forums with it, sending out guild announcements with it, and letting other users donate Gaia Cash to their favorite guilds.

#25. Increase the text amount in sending out announcements. When we do extensive updating in guilds sometimes we cant fit all of our info in one announcement.

#26. Give us a button for the use of spoiler codes. It's hard for a lot of people to remember the exact code for it. Having a button for it would make things a whole lot easier.

#27. Fix the polls to work in guilds like they do in forums. Reloading the page to add options is annoying.

#28. Let us give customizable titles to crew members so that it is easier to assign jobs.

#29. I noticed in my searching through the guilds that there are many that have gone extinct. However, there is no way of telling this from the info displayed in the guild search. I propose that, after receiving no new posts for a period of time (6 months?), a guild should be automatically hidden from the registry, and the Captain and crew of said guild should be auto-PMed with a message stating as such. This way, members searching through prospective guilds will not waste their time on dead ends, and the captain and crew will know that their guild is currently hidden, just in case they want to change it back.

#30. Also, it would be useful if one could click the headings in the guild search to narrow it on that particular category. For example, if I could click Members, and the guilds with the highest amount of members would be displayed first on the list. I think it would be nice to be able to sort guilds by most recent post, member size, and post amount.

#31. Please update the BBCode parser so that the guilds will read BBCode tags in the same manner as the forums. That will make formatting and layouts so much easier.

#32. Give us achievements to earn by doing things in guilds. Giving us achievements to earn by doing things in guild will draw a lot more attention to guilds plus it will give achievement hunters more things to do in between site events.

Just a small thing to add, not sure if anyone has already mentioned this, but once you choose a post style in the guilds, you are unable to change it. So if I wanted to change my regular "say" style to "ornate" I can't. Kinda makes it difficult for setting up events in guilds when sometimes you just forget to change that sweatdrop

I tried to create a PTSD support guild, to help replace a PTSD support thread in the Lifestyle Discussion forum.

It could be a big upside. Remembering someone's story 30 (or 300) pages ago can be really hard, and virtually impossible to find.

Problem is, with the lack of subscription ability (#12 in your list!) it's impossible to keep the guild active as we normally go into periods of inactivity, and when we get back, those needing support have moved on. The lack of that ability, in itself, is enough to kill many guilds.

I sign. I think that adding guild specific games and/or guild vs guild games would be a nice idea, or even Gaia made guild events/competitions (I dunno maybe for say guild specific items or something).

I do hope that they create more incentive for people to be active in guilds, and I definitely hope for guild notifications other than just quoting or announcements.

Personally I would really love it if they brought the guild interface up to date to match the forums. Tip buttons, thread layouts, and reply layouts. Especially tip buttons and for when you hit 'reply' for the layout to match regular forums.

One thing I'm not quite sure about though is achievements for guilds, only because I think most achievement hunters would just wind up creating guilds with no purpose to gain them and creating guilds on mule accounts for achievements that would require using another user's guild.

I'm not overly active in Guilds myself, but even I can see that if they updated the Guilds with just a few of the suggestions you've listed above, it would create a massive improvement to the system overall.

I wholeheartedly sign! I agree with all of the points made in this petition. When I first joined Gaia two years ago, the first place I ever visited were the Guilds, and it pains me to see the feature so neglected. I would love to see all of the suggestions made happen, but I'd be happy if even a few of those were added. It would make my life as a Captain and Member much, much easier. I've been on a hiatus for a few months, so it's nice to come back and see some changes. I believe I will be leaving again for who knows how long, but if I come back and see some changes made to the Guilds, that would make me oh-so-very-happy.

However, I sort of disagree with one suggestion, but it's not that big of a deal to me. The suggestion was that the Gaia Staff get rid of the option to donate gold to the guild for subforums and announcements. I understand that a lot of Captains have a guild mule and use the funds there for contests and giveaways, but some of the larger guilds need lots of gold for announcements. I understand that the likelihood of a Captain not being able to fund announcements are very small, but there are a lot of members with expensive quests. If you have the expensive quest, funding for a contest/giveaway or even multiple, and other things such as tipping some really good posts, the expenses come to be...well, a lot, especially if a newbie wants to run their first guild. I would just like to point this out. Perhaps you've already thought about it, and in that case, I would like to know if you have a solution. I would also like to remind you that not every Gaian is good at vending, an artist, patient enough for fishing, or good at Booty Grab. I'm sure with a little practice, this can happen, but some people take a very long time to learn new things. Again, I'm not trying to shoot down the suggestion, but I am pointing out some concerns I have. Despite my concerns, it was a good suggestion.

All in all, I'm very happy that I have come across seventy-plus Gaians who are striving for the same ideals I am. The neglect of the Guilds are part of the reason why I took a hiatus. I suppose if some changes are made, I will be spending more time on here. I will wait with bated breath to see what happens in the future.

I use guild quite frequently now, mainly for rp.
Though those are very slow.

It will be nice if in moderator setting, you can arrange the sub forum, instead of them being fixed to the time you create them
I like things and arranged neatly, not having a sub-forum i forgot to create to be far below from the cluster it belonged.

Guild need to be updated badly. Some of those features you listed would be so helpful. I would suggest adding a feature that allows the crew to view posts that have been deleted by a members. I know in the logs we can see topic names but not what's actually been written in it. It would be incredibly helpful if a dispute among members happens while the crew is offline but it's deleted by the offender before the crew sees it.
It would certainly help solve these kinds of issues much quicker I think.

I think after I made the suggestion to allow guilds to be used on the mobile platform, they said that they were going to do a guild overhaul. I could have misinterpreted that (like always) but they were going to consider the suggestion after the eventual update. So who knows. I can try asking at the next AtS.

As a guild captain, I'm going to sign the petition. It's kind of annoying to try and close topics one at a time and move them to their designated trash bin so to speak when trying to clean up the forums And to have the busy editing function mirror that of the forums. (Even though I use BetterGaia so that doesn't really matter to me that much.)

Another suggestion I have is maybe being allowed to make more than one guild announcement. Things can change with contests and such during the day and the crew and vice captains could add on to things or whatever..

And of course adding the guilds to the mobile app. Instead of just seeing updates and notices for threads in the app and just moving over to the phone browsers.

Not only would I love for the guild features to be updated but I'm also hoping for Gaia to change the guild layouts. The guild forums need to be as wide as the normal forums and the front page (where you can read the guild information) needs to be spiced up to appeal users.

I love the idea with the achievements. It motivates users into rediscovering the guild feature. You would also encourage activity.

But I disagree with numbers 19 and 26.
I don't think you should be able to withdraw funds, I think that makes it easier for people to scam or cheat. And also goes against it being a "gold sink." Because if you can access the gold, it is no longer sunk unless you spend it on the guild.
Also, use of spoiler code? I use it in my guild forums all the time, so I am confused by this.

As the current Captain/Owner of a B/C guild, I would like to add something:

Let us EDIT POSTS in the guild like we can in the forums. Right now I'm trying to format the guild where all 'official' posts use the "ornate" post border. If I forget to change the post style, or something goes wrong, I have to delete that post and loose out on one of my fifteen page posts because I cannot go back and edit it. This needs to be fixed.

I didn't see this on the list but I may have missed it. I would like the option to move subforums around to change the order. You may have a new subforum or idea and want to change where it is in the line up. (I'm a bit OCD that way.) Currently you have to change the name and then manually move each thread one by one. Way too much work! Especially for larger guilds with a lot of members and threads.

I own 3 guilds and I have had them for years. I started my first guild in 2007 and we haven't had any guild upgrades since I started my second guild in 2009. It is way past time for an upgrade to my favorite part of Gaia...Guilds of course...^.^

I love most of the ideas for Guild improvements and I would love to see the ability to completely customize guild backgrounds. I also think the battle system would be interesting but we need the option to choose to be a passive (non participating) guild if we would like... 4laugh

oh here are my suggestions that i dunno if it's possible in gaia
1. Give the captains the power to move or rearrange the subforum

2. People donate to the guild (not the mule account) so that the owner can make subforums (and etc.), but how about a feature wherein the guild can buy the items as prizes, so that it'll be less hassle for people to go to their mule account to give out the prizes. And the captain and selected crew have access in those funds to buy and give out items (of course there should be a log)

As a long time guild user, it's very disheartening that there has been no updates outside of bug fixes for the longest time. I know it's a huge amount of work for staff, but other systems have been added in the past few years that are equally if not more tedious to implement, and update equally as old features. it would be wonderful to see a feature that is so widely used updated in its entirety.

one thing i dont see anywhere on here is an option to turn the moderator panel into a different language, while im posting up in english i have guild members who have no ability to do this they only understand spanish so i have to put special links on the guild home page for others to help me out simply because english is not an option
now i know that maybe they cant do every language but if they could give you the option for english, spanish and french that would be great and since spanish and italian are similar in some respects it would essentially provide a fourth language for users to moderate with in guilds
this may have to be a premium feature but it should be an option for those who need it especially since gaia is in so cali and spanish is another very common language here

Guilds are basically the only part of gaia that I actively use & interact with, and it's pretty saddening to see a whole section of the site that is not only ignored but left in the ancient past as far as design & functionality goes. I would love to see even a small update given to them.

Long ago, before the main forums received an update, I was quite active in the guilds I was a member of. Unfortunately, with the outdated forum features and format of the guild forums, it really discourages me from maintaining an active presence in my guilds. As it stands now, I there is very little of that so-called "community feeling" in the guilds, which is the entire point of a guild!

Please, Gaia, if you can't feasibly keep zOMG both because of the faulty code and not making money on it, if you can't afford new features, if you can't fix the economy, if you have to focus so much on the cash shop, please please please PLEASE consider updating the guilds.

Let me tell you a thing about guilds, Gaia.

While I was drawn to Gaia by the cute avatars, I stayed because of the guilds. I found a Kingdom Hearts roleplay guild to call my online home. I participated in a roleplay with that guild for YEARS, and when that one ended, I was in several others within that same guild for YEARS. Do you know how rare and precious it is to not only find enough of a like minded group to have a roleplay at all, but to have it last THAT LONG? Our original roleplay was 2,200 pages long! Others within the guild were respectable lengths as well, in the hundreds.

And I made good friends. Lots of them. That's also very rare.That's rare of LIFE IN GENERAL, let alone an online community.

We drew fanart of our characters. We made character soundtracks for our OC's and posted them in a thread. We had "Ask a Character a Question" threads, fanfics of our RP, theoretical battle scenarios ("What Would Your RPG Team Be?" wink using our characters... We even made a PIN-UP CALENDAR! I know that sounds ridonc but at the time it was awesome. And my character was the first one everyone wanted to see on it. And we talked about the concepts and themes for each month, and the like...

And we joked how much of a family we were, because we were, in a way. We were there for each other. We made a thread about that, too. It really was a refuge for each of us. I know for a fact that it was really the only place some of the members could feel accepted and cared for. Again, rare.

I even met my first serious boyfriend in this guild. He was the guild leader, I was the vice prez, yes this is sounding like a Taylor Swift song, I know. We were like the "mom and dad" of the guild.

And we managed to do this even though the guilds were one of the least updated parts of Gaia. Even though they needed sooo much improvement.

Even though a lot changed, and I ended up leaving that guild for various reasons, even though some things drama-wise make me head-desk, I still look back on those times with a lot of fondness. It's something I've been seeking to find again, but I really haven't succeeded. I have good friends, to be sure, but having a bunch of friends to collaborate with creatively like that? Not at all.

I don't know, I still hang on to this hope that if Gaia breathed some new life into the guilds, made it easier to find appropriate ones, the things listed in this petition... Maybe I could come back and have that one last epic and meaningful roleplay. Maybe I could find a group like that again. Just one more. I know it could happen.

And on the other hand, do you know how hard it is to find a decent roleplay OUTSIDE of Gaia? There are individual things like ProBoards, but they tend to feel too empty to draw people in permanently. There's Tumblr, and they're doing great with the "character prompt" kind of roleplay, but anything sizable in plot? Not really. I've seen RolePlay Gateway, and in some respects they do well, but I've noticed their fandom-based roleplays tend to die out pretty quick. There's even Gaia's own Barton forums, but I feel like it's harder to manage a roleplay in there.

Gaia, you could become the hub of roleplaying again. What's listed on the front page of this petition is wonderful, but I bet there are even more creative things we could do with the guilds. And I imagine it would cost way less than running an MMO like zOMG! You already have a large userbase for this purpose.

And I'm biased towards roleplaying, but I bet if you asked others, especially the ones fighting for the update through this petition, they have found meaning in their own experience with the guilds. I don't know, the guilds allow a level of closeness that the forums don't have so much. It's so much more personal.

I bet older members like myself would even come back in a more permanent way if you were to do this. Hell this is something I'd back with money. I'd buy those monthly envelopes or whatever amount to have guilds get updated. I used to do that in the first place.

Furthermore, I have two things to add to the ideas list.

Especially with the take down of ZOMG I think updating the Guilds will increase traffic to Gaia. Lately everyone has been telling me that Gaia is becoming boring to them because there is nothing to do and the lack of kindness in the Forums is making them afraid to post there. A guild can change that. Guilds are fantastic ways to meet people who have similar interests. They add more organization to roleplays and options for roleplay Captains. It is a much more comfortable community.

Guilds inspire friendships, a support system and a passion for community.

I'd love to see improvements on the coding and posting systems. Roleplayers are all about style, presentation and making their characters the best they can offer. But the old Gaia posting system makes this difficult. Therefore, many roleplayers get confused, or dislike posting, especially when their layouts don't work like they are suppose to. Especially since they love the ideas the roleplay has to offer.

This creates a barrier. I feel like it's a lose lose situation at times. Gaia loses out because the person may not be as interested in Gaia, or become frustrated with the site. The person loses out, because they can't enjoy the guilds or meet the many people who make the guild possible. The guild loses out because that is a potential active member that keeps the guilds moving. The Captains and Crew loses because their wonderful idea and hard work is avoided, not because of the content, but the posting system.

I hope for the best. I love Gaia. I will always love Gaia.

I don't agree with all of the options on page one, but these really would be great:

#1. Give us the ability to give tips to other members in guilds.
We give tips in forums, it doesn't make sense that we aren't able to do this in our guilds. Due to the current state of the economy it would be nice if we could increase the tipping amount. YES!

#2. Give us the option to delete/move multiple threads at a time in guilds.
This would make it a whole lot easier and less time consuming to maintain our guilds.

#3. Give us the option to delete unwanted sub-forums in guilds.
Again, this would be so convenient. Sometimes sub-forums don't go as planned then they are there forever, it becomes a hassle and eyesore. Let us get rid of useless sub-forums!

#6. Create a join request history. - This is why I charge 1g to join, so I have a record of who joined when. As for bans, that isn't really a concern of mine, but a thread in the Crew forum would fix that, as well as the keeping track of warnings in number 15.

#7. Alert guild members when a sub-forum gets a new reply, sometimes sub-forums do not get a lot of attention, alerting members when a sub-forums gets a new post could help fix this problem. Maybe you could put a different color note next to the sub-forums name instead of a white note whenever someone posts in it. YES!

#8. Provide a way to ban multiple people at once in the guilds. This will make it easier to get rid of inactive people.

#11. Give us the option to view our post history in guilds. We have the ability to view what we post in forums, we should have the option to see what we have posted in guilds as well. YES!

#12. Allow us to subscribe to guild threads. We can do it in forums, but we cant do it in guilds and that doesn't make any sense. It would make things so much more convenient, I know that the role playing guilds would love it. YES!

#14. Allow us to customize the forum backgrounds in our guilds. Great gold sink idea!

#17. Update Guild Search, a lot of times when i put key words into the guild search I end up with a bunch of guilds that aren't even related to the key words that I put in. Gaia please fix this, it's annoying.

#20. We all have houses in towns, give us an option to spend gold on buying a huge building in towns for our guilds. This way guild members can meet up and hang out in designated guild buildings. It could probably become a good gold sink too.

#22. Allow us to send out multiple guild announcements in a day. Things can change with contests and such during the day and the crew and vice captains could add on to things or whatever. Allowing this would be more convenient. NO! Keeping the number of announcements down is good. Plan carefully, and make use of images to cover more information than will fit in the text limit instead.

#26. Give us a button for the use of spoiler codes. It's hard for a lot of people to remember the exact code for it. Having a button for it would make things a whole lot easier.

#27. Fix the polls to work in guilds like they do in forums. Reloading the page to add options is annoying.

#28. Let us give customizable titles to crew members so that it is easier to assign jobs. YES!

I response to the suggestion above, may I add that there should be some sort of code written that only allows the Guild Captain and Vice Captain(s) to use the funds on improvements within the Guild and for purchasing items from Gold Shops, including but not limited to Loyal's Bazaar. That way, the feature of the donations to the Guild can only be used as a functioning Gold Sink, but will allow broader usage by the Guild for its Members. I know that some individuals may abuse this for personal gain, but the programming and code can only control so much; it can't control human nature.

It would be great to see a new update with the guilds. I haven't seen one in a very long time. I've been here for quite a while, and never seen much as far as guilds go.

It's supposed to be a place for people to meet, learn, and grow as a group. I don't know how anyone is supposed to accomplish that with the way the guilds are now.

There should be easier way to switch guild leaders if they are off for extended periods of time. Such as, weeks, months, and even years. I don't know how many guilds I have wanted to join, but wasn't able to be accepted because the guild leader didn't get on anymore.

Guild events or activities would be a great addition as well. I might bring in more members or those who are active guild participants might want to stay a little longer. It would be fun to see what kinds of things the guild communities can come up with as far as that goes.

Making the guild directory a little easier to navigate, or more inviting would be a tremendous help. I understand that there are categories that you can find guilds under, but they are all cluttered together. Having sub categories for certain ones would do a lot of good. Such as the RP one. I don't RP myself much, but I am sure it would help a lot of people out. Being able to find general guilds to make friends, RP (general or anime), faith (religion), gaming, ect.

First idea:
On the front page in the threads, at the top and bold and big and has a picture, there should be a box where it says "Go To Guild Home." On top of all the threads. Where it's like the towns, rally, hollywood, your house - the chat rooms, but it's only designated for the guild and only guild members and you have to buy the "house" for the guild for the option to be added to the guild and people can donate to the guild so that the guild leader can buy it but the guild leader can't take the gold out of the guild and it's only for the guild house, and like you can choose the design of the guild house and the theme inside the house can be anything from like a rally, desert, a mansion, or more! And people can walk inside and outside of the house.

( I feel like this is a silly idea but.. )
Guild Versus Guilds! like a player versus player kind of thing! Maybe it'll be like a Zomg kind of thing or a lake kindred theme but a online fight, where you have to be there and participate, one guild is on the other side and the other guild is on the opposite side.
They can either choose to fight each other, there will be a ping on the guild's thread and to everyone in the guild against the other guild and anyone can join in by clicking the notification but there will be a certain amount or the guild leader can choose who can be invited too!, or they can just open the game and just click the "random" and randomly go against random guilds and there will be a bottom chat room so they can call talk and stuff to each other. smile and who ever wins will win a reward and you know how there's high scores on the game page? There will be a 'Guild's high score" and the guilds will show up that have the most wins and points.

Not sure if that made any sense!
