Update: Aside from the Gcash Purchasable option in the Marketplace, gold generators are no longer being released. I do think the Gcash Puchasable option still counts as a gold generator, but it may be different enough on its own that it might need a separate petition for it (it may only be a matter of time before they remove or alter that feature too, but we'll see), so as long as the other gold generators are no longer being released, I consider the petition to be finished. Thank you to everyone who has signed or supported the petition. cat_3nodding
Introduction:
Despite extremely negative feedback against it, Gaia has released massive gold generators over and over again, advertising them primarily in the Community Announcements. The maximum payout in these gold generators is steadily being raised higher and higher, starting around 100 million, and has since been raised to more than a trillion. Given the pattern, it's practically guaranteed for the maximum payout to keep rising. There are multiple new gold generators being released every week now, which is approximately one new gold generator per day.
They've been released under dozens of names. There's a list of known gold generators here.
Each gold generator has different odds of winning the varying amounts of gold, but all of the ones listed give out lots of gold at least sometimes.
This petition is to get Gaia to never release any massive gold generator ever again.
Why are they hated so much?
Aside from the fact that they're advertised all the time now, getting at least a minimum of one or two gold generator-related announcements per day, they are the primary source of inflation in the Marketplace.
The typical Chance Item will always give you some sort of item if you open it. Even though you might be able to sell this item for millions of gold in the Marketplace, the gold won't be created out of thin air, and it has to be earned by somebody else. The Sellback Value on these types of items are usually quite low (if it even has one), so even if you decided to sell the item directly from your Inventory (which would convert it directly to gold), the extra gold that was created is still relatively low, so there's little to no noticeable inflation in the Marketplace.
The problem with gold generators is, though they're similar to a Chance Item in that the amount of gold you get is randomized, they generate the gold out of nowhere, and they make a lot of it. Since the gold isn't taken from somebody else, the amount of gold throughout the site steadily goes up (not that it's distributed evenly between the users, which is even worse), so the prices of items in the Marketplace also increase, because those that got money from the gold generators will have such a ridiculous amount of money, that they're often willing to buy items at much higher prices, just because they have the money to do it. Those who don't buy a gold generator will fall way behind the people who bought one, and if they were questing an expensive item, they'll either have to wait a ridiculously long time to get it, or they'll just give up (they may even quit if it was something they really wanted).
Those who are good at vending might be able to keep up, especially if they have enough items to sell from before inflation hit, or were already a multimillionaire, but they would have to list their items at the new inflated price if they want to continue to keep up with the prices. If they intentionally list their items at the old price to try and keep inflation down, the relative "overall value" of that user's account will drop lower and lower as inflation goes up, and if done repeatedly, makes vending (at least the kind that involves buying items) impractical, or even impossible. If you don't adjust the prices of the items you sell to be in scale with the inflation, you're practically listing your items at lower and lower prices as inflation rises, even if you've been selling the same item for the same price for weeks.
Seeing as the vast majority of people hate these things, I would guess that most users aren't even buying them anymore, but it seems that even just a few determined users that have plenty of real money to spend seems to be enough to ruin the entire economy, which is why I really hate when people say, "if you would just stop buying them, they'll stop selling them." I haven't bought a single one of these gold generators, and given how many other people hate them, I'd say the majority of users aren't buying them anymore either, if they ever did.
One of the questions in their FAQ about Flynn's Booty (they deleted it, what a surprise) was "Have you considered how this item and gold grant will affect the Gaia economy?!?" (even the person they're quoting seems annoyed to the point of yelling their question). Their answer was:
Since their FAQ has now been deleted, here's a full re-post:
Even though a lot of users were annoyed the first time they released Flynn's Booty, we were also told this was a "limited time offer." If that remained the case, the Marketplace would be back to normal by now, and the user uproar would have died down as well. But then... they released it again... and again... and again, so the Marketplace never had time to recover, and it sounds like they're going to keep releasing gold generators as long as they're making even the slightest amount of money from it, no matter how annoyed people get. I'm assuming it's because it's easier for them to stick gold in a gold generator rather than pay someone to make new items. But they also tend to release gold generators just as the Marketplace items start to revert back to their original prices. If this is intentional, they're probably trying to convince us to spend real money to get the things we can no longer afford with gold alone, in which case, they may be making a profit by keeping everything inflated.
Soon after they released Flynn's Booty the first time, they seemed to acknowledge (not that they ever admitted it was their fault) that inflation was going up, because soon afterwards, they asked how we would feel if they raised the Marketplace Tax.
Given the timing, they seemed to have noticed the inflation. They proposed the idea just three days after having released Flynn's Booty for the first time. Since they're still releasing them, I guess they just don't care about the damage they're causing. They dropped the idea of raising the tax for a few months because most people voted against it in the poll, but recently, they've started raising it up to 3%, and most recently, 5%.
My personal stance on the tax is: If they're going to keep releasing gold generators, they shouldn't raise the tax at all. If they are going to stop releasing gold generators, then I'm fine with them raising the tax temporarily until the economy is close to its original state, at which point I would want the tax to be lowered again.
But how else am I supposed to make gold quickly?
If you were already the type to spend Gaia Cash in order to make gold, then try buying item generators, aka Chance Items, instead (such as a Walking Dead Grab Bag). Chance Items work exactly like gold generators, but you get an item instead, which you can sell on the Marketplace for gold, won't hurt the economy, and makes those particular items easier to afford for everyone else. The average "payouts" from selling a Chance Item prize can often even be better than the gold payouts from gold generators.
Another alternative that doesn't involve gold generators is an old-fashioned method with an unusual twist: Collect trash and flowers in Towns 1 like you might have in the earlier days of Gaia... All while using Adblock to hide all of the useless items! Because yes, it turns out you can do that, and it works quite effectively if you can get it to work properly. Muahahaha. The details are in this thread.
What if I liked to donate them to other users?
If you were donating the gold generators instead of using them yourself (which is bad for the economy either way), then you have quite a few options for donating to other people:
1. Open a trade with that person for the exact amount of gold you want to give them. Requires them to accept, and you can't be anonymous.
2. Gift them an item worth the amount of gold you want them to have (possibly with a message recommending they sell it), or just make sure it's an item they wanted. You can write them a message, and you can be anonymous.
3. Buy a Mytrill Coin Package from Barton Boutique, and gift it to the user. There are four gold amounts you can choose from: 100,000,000g, 250,000,000g, 500,000,000g, and 1,000,000,000g. Because you're gifting it, you can write them a message, and you can be anonymous.
What if I already own a gold generator?
A lot of gold generators will give out items, either by choosing the item option, or by having the type of prize being randomly determined. Even if you don't like gold generators, you might not want to just throw it away if you somehow get ahold of one.
If you get an item from it, you can either use the item to equip on your avatar or sell it on the Marketplace, which doesn't cause any inflation, possibly even lowering inflation on the particular item you got because it'll be less rare.
If you get gold instead, and don't want to release it into the economy, you can donate what you win into the now-frequent gold sinks, or "kickstarters," that often show up in the header. The gold is taken out of the economy, and they should always give you some kind of reward in return, so even if you end up with less than what you originally got from the gold generator, you still won't leave empty-handed, with no bad effects on the economy.
If you still want most or all of the gold you won, you could also try buying items from Loyal's Bazaar (if you have access) and reselling them on the Marketplace for roughly the same price. Not everyone has access to Loyal's Bazaar, so they would have to get the Loyal's Bazaar items from someone else anyway. If they can find a seller, then they can "sink" their gold into the account of the person who originally sunk their gold into Loyal's Bazaar. You'd just be the middleman, but hypothetically, it should make sure the amount you won is taken out of the economy by someone else (who also got the item they wanted, so everybody wins).
Are they ever going to stop releasing them?
The FAQ in their most recent ATA (which was apparently their last ATA ever) makes it sound like they plan to keep releasing them indefinitely. There was even a later post by Zero Omega, and apparently, it sounds like they don't believe that the majority of users hate Flynn's Booty, because they don't have any "factual data" that proves it. Every poll I've seen about gold generators, and I've seen over a dozen of them, has had at least 75% (and most are closer to 90% to 95%) of the voters saying they hate them and never want to see them again. That sounds like pretty good "factual data" to me. I think they were just being intentionally oblivious.
They recently seem to have done a "trial run" without gold generators (staff update here), but it didn't seem to last very long, as they brought back "modified versions" of gold generators (staff update here) just 5 days later. How exactly could they test if taking them out was going to be as profitable if they didn't even give it a full week? If they're telling the truth this time, then at least they'll be less frequent. Being "modified" also seems to be a bit vague, but may imply they'll start lowering the maximum payouts, but they didn't specify.
How many times have they been released so far?
Gold generators are primarily advertised in the Community Announcements (with some "reminder announcements" between some releases). They're often released the same time as they're advertised.
But Gaia has also sometimes silently put the gold generators in the Cash Shop for a few hours at a time without an announcement, which means they've been released even more times than I could list.
They've actually been releasing them so fast and so often lately, there's almost no way for me to keep track of exactly how many announcements they've made at this point, but they've made at least a few hundred gold generator-related announcements in just a few months.
Community Announcements: (Only has the earliest announcements)
Private Messages:
This PM was sent to my mules, which never bought Gaia Cash. This PM was sent on September 10th.
The next PM was sent to this account, Kangit, who had bought some Gaia Cash in the past. The PM was sent twice with the exact same message on September 16th.
So, they're rewarding my "activity and support" with the exact same deal that everyone else got earlier, the message has weird, glitchy question marks in it, and they spam me with it twice.
Club Verge Guild Announcements:
I copied down the text from a screenshot, because I'm not in the Club Verge guild myself.
Pop-up Ads:
This pop-up first appeared (at least for me) on October 23, 2013, and it showed up again on October 26, 2013.
Note that I had to alter the screenshot because images haven't been showing up in their latest pop-ups for some reason (which may make them less effective, so take that Gaia!), so I had to edit the image into it. It probably doesn't look the way it was intended to look, but it now has the text and image.

We knew you'd ask this, and actually yes, we did! We had several people trained in statistics and economic systems analyze the potential gold output of the item, and the most likely effect it will have on the overall Gaia economy long-term.
Compared to other gold granting features, the Flynn's Booty item is not expected to have a negative impact on the overall economy in the long-term. Might there be a temporary spike in inflation in marketplace values? Yes, this could happen, but given the limited time offer of the item and the fact the gold source is finite, it is not predicted to have any long-term negative effect on the economy.
We hope the fact that we did investigate this issue before releasing the item is comforting to any of you who might have concerns!

Flynn's Booty Mini-FAQ
We thought you might have some questions about the new Flynn's Booty item, so we wanted to make a Mini-FAQ with some answers we think will be helpful!
What is the range of gold amounts that one can win from the Flynn's Booty item?
The Flynn's Booty treasure chest will randomly grant between 50,000 Gaia gold and 100,000,000 Gaia gold to people that use the item! In short, you can win between 50,000 - 100,000,000 Gaia gold if you play!
How long will the Flynn's Booty treasure chest item be available for purchase in the Cash Shop?
This item will be available from August 22, 2013 until end of day August 26, 2013. After that time, Flynn's ship will fly away along with the item!
Have you considered how this item and gold grant will affect the Gaia economy?!?

Raising the Marketplace Tax
Hi all,
With the recent influx of gold, there have been many concerned that inflation will rise to horrible levels and that we need to add more gold sinks on the site to combat this. Rest assured that gold sinks are on their way but before those come around, we wanted to examine a request that we've seen tossed around for a bit now, raising the marketplace tax from its current 2% level. To gauge overall reaction to this idea, we've set up a feedback thread for you to let us know how you feel. Please note that nothing has been decided yet and that the poll in the thread is not going to be the single metric we look at when deciding if it would be a good idea. What we really want to hear is your reasoning and feedback on why you're for or against such a change so please post and let us know!

This PM was sent to my mules, which never bought Gaia Cash. This PM was sent on September 10th.

Here's the deal: Buy $5 or more worth of Gaia Cash, and you'll receive 25 Flynn's Booties for free!
Each Flynn's Booty has the potential to award you between 50,000 and 100 million Gaia Gold, and in addition of course you'll be able to use your Gaia Cash to buy any of the gorgeous items in La Victoire. It's a win-win!

The next PM was sent to this account, Kangit, who had bought some Gaia Cash in the past. The PM was sent twice with the exact same message on September 16th.

Hello! To reward you for your activity and support of Gaia, we wanted to make a special offer available to you.
Fund your account this week by buying $5 or more in Gaia Cash, and youll receive 25 Free Flynns Booty. If you arent familiar with Flynns Booty, each one operates similar to a Chance Item, in that by opening each treasure chest, youll receive some amount of Gaia Gold between 50 thousand and 100 million with each.
This offer for loot wont be around long, so get it while you can!!

[NPC] P.U.G.
Hello, everyone! Your faithful P.U.G here with another amazing opportunity for Club Verge. Flynn and I have struck up a deal, and I am now able to offer Flynn's Chest exclusively to my beloved Club Vergers. I've specially calibrated these amazing items to be twice as nice as the original Flynn's Booty! Each Flynn's Chest is guaranteed to make you a millionaire, and has the chance to contain up to 250 million gold! Imagine all the delicious, sweet, juicy bacon you could buy with that much loot... And if you want to up your chances of hitting the jackpot, why not pick up a bundle of Flynn's Chests? But remember, I'll only be able to keep these in the shop from September 26th until September 30th, 11:59 PST before Flynn rockets off again, so it's important to pick up a Flynn's Chest while she's still around!
Now if you'll excuse me, I must depart to hold up my end of the bargain with Flynn. We P.U.Gs may not be adept at many things outside of maintaining shops and writing haiku, but we're built exceptionally well for swabbing the decks of spaceships! I think it's on account of the low center of gravity we naturally possess. Adieu, Vergers!
