I definitely support this. I remember the mad excitement when zOMG! was about to be released and it's pretty much the main reason I'm still on gaia. So I'd love to see it get the attention and staff it deserves.

Also, I'd donate all my cookies if I could.

Because they're looking for quantity of people that this will effect rather than how much a certain (oftentimes small) group wants it.
The fact is that GaiaOnline is a business. Thus, they need revenue. The more people that are interested in an certain area, the more potential revenue they bring in.
Think of it this way: What's better? One person who spends 100 dollars on zOMG!, or 50 people spending 5 dollars? You do the math.
