Despite the fact that it will cause people to find a way to keep the item. There will probably be a time when it glitches, and people take advantage of this.

I think you should be able to charge a fee to lend an item.
However this should be optional.
And definitely have an instant return option if you want your item back with an automatic message sent to the person borrowing to let them know you've taken it back.

A beta is an excellent idea, as something like this certainly needs a lot of testing and to be as hack proof as possible.
