What a deliciously evil idea!

For the "Midas" suggestion, how about this: have everything currently equipped on your avatar be colored gold (via palette swapping)? I love the donkey ears addition to this one!

The "Pillar of Salt" idea (Lot's wife--see the book of Genesis for the details) is a good one too!

For Egyptian mythology, how about Bast's Curse--two or three cats all using your avatar as their scratching post?

Japanese: Is there an item which turns an avatar into a kappa? If not, then add one, complete with cucumber (a kappa's favorite food). Also, kitsune (foxes) and neko (cats, like me, nyao!) were notoriously fond of playing pranks. Kitsune were said to be able to turn themselves human by balancing a human skull on their heads and praying to the moon, so a good item would be white fox ears, a white fox tail (because Inari, the god/goddess of rice, often takes the form of a white fox), a skull on top of the avatar's head, a full moon background (perhaps done in a Japanese woodcut style?), and weird blue flames around the chara to represent "kitsune-bi"--literally "fox-fire", the magical blue flames that kitsune can create as part of their powers of illusion. For neko, white cats with long tails were said to be able to turn themselves human, so have a white cat tail with the end split in two, white cat ears, and a kimono with a cat's head pattern on it.
Then there's also oni, ogre-demons with horns, bulging muscles, iron clubs, and tiger-skin loincloths (tiger-striped bikini and leggings for the girls--think Urutsei Yatsura >-_^< wink , and...

Chinese: the story about the emperor and the clay army is true--they were made from terra-cotta, and there were thousands of them! (I like the idea of having an avatar looking like it was crafted from red clay, with every equipped item being the same way a la Midas, above.)
There's also the story of the Monkey King from "Journey to the West"--he was such a bad boy that the gods ordered him to follow a Buddhist sage to India to retrieve a particularly holy document and bring it back with him. For this one, have the avatar have a half-monkey face and monkey tail, with a Buddhist Monk and a pig (the Monkey King's companions) surrounding the avatar. Oh, almost forgot--also have the avatar holding a Chinese martial arts staff (Monkey King's weapon of choice) and a scroll or o-fuda (yes, I know o-fuda are Japanese, but they're still Buddhist...)

Celtic: Well, technically we already have a silver arm, unless you mean one that looks normal aside from being silver-colored? (Nuada Argetlam)
Fomori were all terribly ugly and deformed--the "one eye bigger than the other" comes from their king, Balor of the Evil Eye, whose right eye was huge, yellow, and bloodshot, and could turn people to stone if they looked into it like an Irish version of Medusa.
Herne the Hunter was also known as the leader of the Wild Hunt, and was often depicted as a black man (not african-american, but totally black, like a black leather jacket) wearing black leather armor with antlers on his head, glowing green eyes, and a spear, surrounded by black dogs with glowing green eyes. People who saw the Wild Hunt on the prowl would either join it (being turned into black wolfhounds) or be chased by it until they were hunted down and killed, so a "Master of the Wild Hunt" set would definitely fit as a "curse of the gods" item.

I like the idea of Sedna, but since she's from the Arctic Circle, you couldn't use sharks--but you could use killer whales instead, since Eskimos, Inuits, etc. did hunt them for food and for oil for heating and lighting their igloos. (Just please don't ask me what muktuk is!)

Here's more from Indian mythology: Shiva the Destroyer (third eye in center of forehead and carrying a trident, with a cobra next to the avatar as a "pet" wink , and the Rakshasa--a race of vampiric tiger-demons who were shapeshifters and powerful illusionists (tiger face, tiger-striped skin, weird mists/fogs around the avatar, and possibly Indian clothing)

Of course, the best place to look for nasty curses is in the writings of H. P. Lovecraft's "Cthulhu" stories... Just think of "the Innsmouth look" (part human, part fish, with strangely shaped gold jewelry) or having a somewhat insane facial expression while holding a copy of the Necronomicon, or (my personal favorite) one based on the story "From Beyond"--strangely colored avatar with weird creatures surrounding him/her and a bizarre, glowing machine behind him/her, or... (shiver)

but

you have no accurate Norse/Scandinavian Gods or Goddess and I happen to be a Swede myself...
I have a few suggestions though

1. Loki- Being bound with intestines/ a Salmon head/ a Feather cloak
2. Freyja- red gold tears/sheet lighting/ a big one would be a skogkatter (Norwegian forest cat)
3.Odin- a raven/ Valkyries
4. Thor- lighting/ a hammer
5.Beowulf- Hrunting/Golden Cup
