Introduction:
Since 2003, gaiaonline has updated its users with what is going on throughout the community with a feature called "announcements". These announcements have ranged from sponsors to full-blown site/NPC story changes. Slowly, as gaiaonline continued to expand and grow, announcements began to increase for users. Important new updates, new features, new items, as well as the usual announcement here and there continued to happen. As users, we loved these announcements. "A new feature? COOL! A new item?? COOL!! WHAT?! A NEW MANGA?! AWESOME!!"
These were what announcements used to be for users. As gaiaonline continued becoming a for-profit business, continued shifting its economy, and began placing more emphasis on the items rather then the users...a new attitude began to emerge on the site. No longer were the announcements used for fun, innovative, community-based ideas every now and then. They instead began to be used for redundant item ideas, became a feature to beg users to "buybuybuy because there is a sale!", and turned into something different from what they should be used for.
Users quickly began to take note...and slowly the announcement quality began fading even faster then what we could ever have imagined. More and more of the same items began coming out, "sales" began, and so did the overall downfall of announcements.
Throughout the years, gaiaonline, we as users have loved the announcements. But no longer. As you continuously force gaia cash items down our throats through the announcements, you bomb us with 10+ announcements a day. You no longer care about the redundancy of announcements, and finally, we have decided to take a step against this once great feature.
As a site you leave us two options: (1) Forcing us to look at those announcements (which is not "advertising", its SPAM) or (2) Ignore them altogether, having them sit there next to our avatars collecting dust (just like I do for the junk folder in my e-mail stare )
That is not right to do to YOUR users, gaiaonline. If you fail to listen to your consumers' concerns, then what kind of business are you really running?
Give us the ability to turn off announcements:
We already have a forum dedicated to site-related announcements. If users wanted to look at the announcements, they are able to through that forum. Many users do not wish to receive notices for announcements any longer, as we:
1.) Do not purchase gaia cash.
2.) Do not care for new items that come out.
3.) Dislike receiving 10+ announcements.
4.) Dislike having to waste our only free time clicking through all of the announcements.
By signing this petition, this is what I want:
-Give me a complimentary option to temporarily turn off community/site-related announcements.
-Give me the power to see what I want to read
That's it. Is that so complicated?
We already have options to turn off all guild-related announcements and staff related notifications/alerts, which announce things like when the site is going to be down, maintenance, and glitches, so why not spam/site-related?
You have lost your personal touch:
Gaiaonline, you have lost your personal touch with users. So why not bring back that personal touch and allow us to continue using this site, while opting out of having to see every new cash shop item that comes out, and every sale that happens? By giving us an option to not have to look at the announcements, you will be allowing us to personalize what we see on this site. For those who choose to use this option, you will receive nothing but gratitude and thanks (who knows, maybe even enough thanks that we would want to begin purchasing Gaia Cash to help support a site that listens to its users).
We miss actually looking forward to announcements.. but no longer.
A little about me:
Personally, I am a full-time college student (senior) getting my degree in Linguistics and Anthropology (so if you don't think I understand what a little solidarity and social action can do to create big changes.. think again!). I work full time as a writing and science tutor at the University and have been an active community member of gaiaonline for over 10 years (since 2006). Originally, I was severely disappointed about how much gaia is treating us as dollar signs instead of the wonderful community we once were. I have gotten over my grudge, and instead ask not to see any new announcements. I have completely stopped reading all announcements that come out. I even stopped buying/looking at the Monthly Collectibles, because I've grown numb to the fact that gaia begs for my money. BEGS. It is annoying to see 10+ announcements show up daily, all of which sound desperate. I am a user of this site, I provide a 'number' for its profit books, I deserve to have my voice heard.
By talking to multiple users, I realized that you all feel the same along some line...you all deserve to have your voice heard, and so I began this petition in hopes to find YOU! Without your support, none of this would be possible.
