Depending on what it is, it actually might make people more willing to hire you. Unless you're acting as a nerd, or something like that. Then you'll probably need to get the tattoo somewhere you can hide it.
Tattoos are definitely something to be careful about if you're a performer. I mean, you're not going to be cast as an honor roll student if you have tattoos visible. Honestly, they're just hard to work around.
However, they can be covered with make-up, but it's a special kind of cover-up. Regular make-up usually won't do the trick.

Get something small in a relatively easy to hide place, and you should be fine.

A one-hit wonder who happened to father Disney's latest cash cow is your best example? neutral
Pretty much what everyone here has already said. Just chose what you get carefully, the size, and where you want it to go. Some tattoos are easily hidden with clothing while others are not. One guy in my theatre group has a tattoo roughly the size of my hand on his chest and I didn't know that until he was changing in the make-up room while another guy has three ummm....."indecent" ladies on his arm, but his characters always have sleeves.

Same thing with piercings. But remember, even you take out the piercing, you still have a hole there.
hell yes. The acting world is harsh. Something as simple as cutting your hair can jeopardize your chances. DON'T DO IT MAN!!!!!! Just don't.

I don't think that is necessarily true. I mean, of course don't mess with your hair CONSTANTLY but as long as it's not outrageous as to what you do with it like extreme coloring or mo-hawking it, you will probably be fine, at least in my opinion. I mean, the next audition I have is 3 or 4 months from now so I feel comfortable dying my hair and when that time comes around. I will say that I feel comfortable dying it back.

And I think think it's better to see that they care about your acting, not the way you look!

Depends where you get it. If it can't be covered up easily with clothing, it's probably not a good idea. Other things that can jeopardize your acting (appearance wise) are unnatural hair colors, piercings, and wearing inappropriate clothing to an audition.

it shouldn't biggrin
Most definately depending on how large or visable it is depending on what you're wearing. Guys have it harder because they can walk on to a stage shirtless so they have less to cover up than a girl does.

Here's a story from one of my college directors, she said that if you want to be a professional actor don't get a tattoo because she had two girls up for the part of rizzo (both equal in singing and acting for the part) and one had a huge tattoo on her calf. She chose the other girl SIMPLY because she didn't want to figure out how to cover up the tattoo. So think about that before you permanently mark your skin.

First of all billy ray cyrus is a....*gag* "musician" and musicians can do whatever the hell they want to their body it doesn't distract from their performance. However if you're on stage acting and you have a nice tattoo of a barbed wire on your neck then that is distracting. The only way you might get considered is if your costume is going to cover said tattoo, and that won't always happen.

hair isn't permanent...a tattoo is so yes the acting world DOES care about appearance it's rather shallow but a large tattoo in plain view is undesirable.
I don't even get HAIRCUTS during theatre for fear of getting in trouble. A kid I know dyed his hair closing night. I thought my director was going to kick him out then and there and do his part herself.

If your tattoo is visible then that will affect the type of character you get. Same with crazy hair color or cut. It's an open invitation to getting typecast.

A more extreme example is plastic surgery. Directors cast partially based off of appearance so changing your look will change the type of character you get.
